First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2828 - Too Short-Sighed

Chapter 2828 – Too Short-Sighed

The owner of that hand was a man whose long hair hung loose. The sleeves of his black robes were wide and so long that they reached the ground. He looked relaxed and unaffected, with natural flair.

He appeared out of nowhere, silent and without a trace. He held the seal as if he were holding a fallen leaf aloft, looking as casual and relaxed as could be.

No one could discern his true appearance. He was obviously close at hand, yet he seemed incomparably far away.

Everyone was startled.

The Malevolent Sword Venerate narrowed his eyes. He wasn’t sure why, but the black-robed man gave him an indescribable unease.

Three Heavenly Sovereigns furrowed their brows, their eyes flashing like cold lightning. All of them locked onto the man in black, their eyes suddenly full of bewilderment.

They were just avatars of will, but their powers of perception were intact. The man was obviously standing right there, but they couldn’t sense him at all!

It was as if he’d jumped out of the cage of time and space, transcending the fetters of Destiny. It looked like he existed, but he was as formless and indescribable as the Grand Dao!

The three Heavenly Sovereigns couldn’t help but feel startled. Who is that?

Meanwhile, the thoroughly sealed Cen Xinghe regained his mobility. The pressure overwhelming Mo Lanhe and Fu Lingyun with despair vanished. It was as if a gentle spring breeze were blowing past them, calming their hearts.

The three of them couldn’t help but feel startled. Who is this person?

Only Su Yi remained as calm as ever. He took out a jug of wine and had a sip.

In a sense, this was his first incarnation’s heart devil’s first time revealing himself!

He’d intervened in the past, but never directly. Instead, he controlled the rusted sheath he inhabited.

“The Lightning Severing Huangting Seal? These are the Laws of Huangting, right? One of the greatest, most primeval Laws of the Primordial Era?” The man in black held the seal aloft and examined it, like an antique dealer appraising a trinket. “But its aura is too weak. It seems like your comprehension of the Laws of Huangting is elementary at best. You’ve yet to really fuse with them.”

Heavenly Sovereign Wen furrowed his brow. “And who are you, sir?”

He was inwardly stunned. Heavenly Sovereigns’ cultivation was inextricably connected to their Eternal Thrones. And his Eternal Throne was the manifestation of the Laws of Huangting, Huangting Grotto!

In this world, he knew the extent of his mastery of the Laws of Huangting better than anyone. Others could forget about assessing his abilities. Yet now, someone had done so at a glance!

The man in black closed his hand, and the golden Daoist Seal shattered, offering no more resistance than tofu. Flecks of golden light scattered like sand, pouring through the gaps between his fingers.

Only then did the man in black clap his hands and smile at Su Yi. “Does this count as asking me for help?”

“If it does, I’ll let you ask me for help once later,” said Su Yi. “Then we’ll be even.”

The man in black didn’t know what to say. Why does he just keep getting more and more poorly behaved?

“What do we do with these people?” said the man in black, no longer in the mood for jokes.

“Whatever you feel like,” said Su Yi.

The man in black rubbed his nose. “Fine. Pretend I never asked.”

He then spun around to face the Malevolent Sword Venerate, Heavenly Sovereign Wen, and the others.

All of them stiffened, for they felt greater pressure than ever before!

But then, the heart devil grinned. “You’re bullying an Unfettered Realm cultivator like him. Now, I’m going to bully you old scoundrels in turn. That isn’t unreasonable, is it?”

Heavenly Sovereign Yaoguang said icily, “Dare you tell us your name?”

Boom!

The heart devil swung his palm, and Heavenly Sovereign Yaoguang’s avatar of will broke like paper window paneling. As casually as if he’d just swatted a fly!

Cen Xinghe, Mo Lanhe, and Fu Lingyun were stunned. Isn’t he a bit too ferocious? How lofty are Heavenly Sovereigns? They’re supposed to be invincible in the Eternal Heavens Domain! That’s why they’re called Heavenly Sovereigns!

The two remaining Heavenly Sovereigns stiffened as they realized the severity of the problem.

That said, they were ultimately just avatars of will. Even if they were destroyed, it would have little impact on their true bodies.

They weren’t afraid, so it wasn’t the danger that infuriated them. No, it was that they’d prepared thoroughly to defeat Su Yi, only for something completely unexpected to happen!

“It seems you two aren’t afraid to die!” The heart devil broke into a warm smile. “After all, even if I destroy you, you’ll at most lose avatars of will.”

“If you know that, why not stop here and chat with us instead?” Heavenly Sovereign Wen said gravely.

“No need for that. I have no desire to chat with you,” the heart devil said with a laugh.

He suddenly stretched out his hand, and a strange scene unfolded. Heavenly Sovereign Wen’s avatar compressed like a bundle of cotton, down to the size of a longan, then landed in the heart devil’s palm.

The heart devil toyed with the little bundle and said, “So what if you aren’t afraid to die? Refining this avatar of yours is more interesting to me anyway.”

He’d just compressed a Heavenly Sovereign’s avatar into a pellet!

This time, Heavenly Sovereign Changhen finally lost his cool. He was no longer concerned with the man in black’s identity. He cast aside all other considerations and immediately tried to self-destruct. Better to destroy himself than to let his enemy refine him into a pellet for his own use.

But then, a large, powerful hand clamped down on his head, sealing him before he could blow himself up. He could no longer move a muscle.

“How could I possibly let you self-destruct so easily?” The heart devil pushed down, and with a bang, Heavenly Sovereign Changhen transformed into a similar pellet and landed in the heart devil’s palm.

The heart devil then turned to smile at Su Yi. “Heavenly Sovereigns’ avatars are wondrously useful. Even lesser avatars are imbued with their awareness, power, and a wisp of their spirituality. I’ve got to say, those two were quite lucky. They received a rare opportunity to be sealed and refined into spirit pearls! Serving me is their honor!”

“Aren’t Heavenly Sovereigns like the incarnations of Heaven’s Will? Isn’t it supposed to be impossible to strip them of their power and refine them?” murmured Cen Xinghe, his heart full of disbelief.

It was Heavenly Sovereign Zhenyue who’d shared these secrets with him.

The heart devil said flatly, “Others can’t do it, but that doesn’t mean I can’t.”

Su Yi didn’t know what to say. My ‘dear grandson’ is like a straight man in a comedy routine. He generously gave the heart devil yet another opportunity to show off!

“Put them away for now. Carry these two little trinkets later, and when their true bodies appear, no matter how deeply they hide themselves, you’ll be able to sense them immediately. You can use the pearls when you deal with them, too.”

The heart devil flicked the spirit pearls, and both flew over to Su Yi.

Su Yi put them away without the slightest politeness. “I’ll prepare a gift for you too when the opportunity arises.”

The heart devil laughed. He knew Su Yi was on guard against him, but he couldn’t be bothered to point that out.

Meanwhile, the Malevolent Sword Venerate said, “Are you… the Big Boss of Sword Sovereign City?”

Disbelief was written all over his face. He’d predicted practically every card Su Yi had. He’d even carefully factored in Su Yi’s potential backers.

He’d used the Endless Expanse Hidden Realm specifically to forestall the possibility of unexpected reinforcements. But he would never have considered the possibility that an incarnation of their mutual first incarnation’s power would appear!

When he realized what was happening, the Malevolent Sword Venerate almost broke down. How could he compete with that?

The heart devil of the rusted sheath turned to look at the Malevolent Sword Venerate. Suddenly, he was pissed off. He couldn’t help but curse, “What an eyesore! You and I are both heart devils, so why are you so unsightly?”

He shook his broad sleeves with anger. “Your schemes are unsightly, your allies are unexceptional, and even now, you’re trying to confirm my identity like some kind of blubbering idiot. You… you’re a disgrace to all heart devils, dammit!”

No one knew what to say to that.

Su Yi facepalmed, then sighed. “Are you criticizing his failure to kill me?”

The heart devil burst into laughter. “I’d have thought better of him if he’d pulled it off!”

The Malevolent Sword Venerate’s expression shifted erratically. He sighed. “Only now do I understand. I was doomed to lose right from the start; I had no hope of victory whatsoever.”

“Why do you say that?” said the heart devil in the rusted sheath.

The Malevolent Sword Venerate gnashed his teeth. “Because of you! You’re a heart devil too, so don’t even try to tell me you aren’t interested in supplanting him. How could you possibly tolerate me possessing him in your stead?”

His face was ashen, yet bleak. Prior to this, before he learned how terrifying his first incarnation was, he might have reacted differently.

But now, he knew!

The master of Sword Sovereign City, the creator of the Eternal Pact, and an unsurpassed legend of the Far Shore of Destiny! How could the Malevolent Sword Venerate possibly fight him?

The heart devil from the rusted sheath raised his eyebrows. When he saw how angry, resentful, and aggrieved the Malevolent Sword Venerate looked, he suddenly lost interest.

He was thoroughly disappointed in his second incarnation’s heart devil. He was too small-minded!

He actually liked and admired his reincarnation, Su Yi, far more. It was only after comparing the two of them that he realized how many good points Su Yi had!

“Do you have anything else to say?” the heart devil in the rusted sheath asked directly.

The Malevolent Sword Venerate seemed to realize he wouldn’t escape, and he actually became calmer.

He looked at Su Yi with pity. “I might be a pitiful worm in our first incarnation’s eyes, but are you really any better, Su Yi?”

“The further you advance along your path and the more you gain, the more you’ll benefit him. Everything you acquire will ultimately be his! Even I can’t help but feel sorry for you.”

With that, the Malevolent Sword Venerate looked at their first incarnation’s heart devil once more. He said slowly and clearly, “I acknowledge my defeat, but… I won’t die!”
