First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2823 - Catastrophe Shakes the City

Chapter 2823 – Catastrophe Shakes the City

Su Yi made no attempt to stop the little girl, Innocence. This was, after all, one of his conditions for helping her leave the dungeon.

If he led Innocence away, there would be no one to preside over the Sin-Severing Dungeon. If he left the Sin Souls here, they’d be a massive latent threat. Better to just entrust them all to Innocence and let her refine them. He could even consider it a good deed.

“Come on, let’s go.” Su Yi flipped his hand, and a copper coin floated above his palm.

Cen Xinghe instantly understood, then said with gratitude, “Thank you, Grandfather!”

Whoosh!

He blurred into a beam of light, slipped between the bars of his cell, and entered the copper coin, Heart Executioner.

This treasure was quite strange. Holding it was like holding a malevolent, heart-stealing demon. Its aura was mysterious and strange. Cen Xinghe had told Su Yi that the coin was like a collar around the Sin Souls’ necks. It was true, too. Because the Heart Executioner was a treasure of the Celestial Demons! It could cut down Sin Souls, but it could also execute and devour the Dao Hearts of living cultivators!

“Master, this treasure is extraordinary, but it’s ultimately inferior to Old Man Ru Ya’s White Bone Tower and Liu Sheng’s Heart-Piercing Saber.” The little girl flipped her palm, and both treasures floated into the air. “If you like them, they’re yours, Master!”

Su Yi shook his head. “I’m a sword cultivator; I don’t need them.”

Innocence was briefly stunned. Then, she lowered her head. “I understand. You possess an unsurpassed supreme treasure; there’s no way you’d be interested in these measly trinkets.”

She’d just recalled the mysterious Dao Sword and the rusted sword sheath that Su Yi had summoned earlier.

“Let’s go,” said Su Yi.

Innocence blurred into a beam of light and vanished into his sleeve.

The “world in his sleeves” was quite spacious. Su Yi could store treasures inside his body, too, but he most certainly didn’t want to store this incarnation of all evils directly inside himself. Better to just seal her in his sleeve.

With that, Su Yi turned to leave the Sin-Severing Dungeon.

The Ancient Nine Luminaries City.

Over one hundred Heavenly Monarchs were waiting outside the ritual grounds. They hailed from the Heart-Tempering Sword House, Limitless Palace, Sevendeaths Court, and the Court of the Southern Heavens. It was an enormous group, a top-notch lineup even by the standards of the Five Great Continents. But only a tiny handful of the Heavenly Monarchs were truly members of these four great orthodoxies. These included Fu Yong, Old Yao Kun Peng, Bi Yunzi, and Granny Snake. The others were from the four great sects’ subordinate factions.

After all, Heavenly Monarchs who entered the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone were doomed never to return. How could four such powerful orthodoxies send their own people to their deaths? Fu Yong, Old Yao Kun Peng, and the others seemed like exceptions, but in truth, all of them had secret measures in place to help them leave alive.

The atmosphere was stifling and oppressive.

Numerous others watched from afar. Practically everyone exploring the Ancient Nine Luminaries City had come, and they’d brought their Dao Protectors with them. Yun Qiaojun, Dong Liujia, Lian Yue, Xie Rouyun, Mo Lanhe, and Fu Lingyun were there, too. All of them were looking at the ritual grounds.

The entrance to the Sin-Severing Dungeon was at the bottom of the well at the ritual grounds’ center. By now, the entire ritual ground had been covered in not one, but four unparalleled killing formations, one from each of the four top factions involved. Together, they were enough to destroy even Heavenly Monarchs with ease!

The crowd didn’t even need to think to know that Li Muchen would be trapped the moment he emerged. He wouldn’t be able to escape, not even if he grew wings. But most of the onlookers found the situation bewildering. Was it really worth assembling such a terrifying lineup all to deal with a random sword cultivator from the Literati Continent?

Over one hundred Heavenly Monarchs! Four supreme killing formations!

If they didn’t know better, they’d have assumed that their target was a terrifying figure infamous throughout the Eternal Heavens Domain.

“What do we do, Senior?” Fu Lingyun transmitted, her face pallid. Despite her carefree personality, she couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with despair. She couldn’t even begin to imagine why they’d placed such a terrifying trap just for Li Muchen.

Mo Lanhe’s expression was as bitter as could be. He felt completely helpless! Even if he disregarded his own life and tried his utmost to save Li Muchen, he’d be no more than a moth to the flame. They’d snuff him out in an instant.

In the end, he forced himself to stay calm, then transmitted, “Lass, that they’re going to such lengths to target Li Muchen proves that he isn’t simple! All you need to do is pay close attention. When the fighting breaks out, should it threaten your life, you must shatter your Nine Luminaries Medallion without hesitation. The best way for you to help Li Muchen is by protecting your own life!”

As he said that last sentence, his expression was utterly severe.

Fu Lingyun’s eyes dimmed, but she nodded. “What about you, Senior?”

Mo Lanhe laughed and said calmly, “When an ant tries to shake a tree, some might laugh at it for overestimating it, but it seems to me that laughable or not, such ants are worthy of respect!”

If he died, he died! If he was going to die anyway, why not risk it all to save Li Muchen?

Fu Lingyun’s heart shook, and her heart filled with wordless grief.

Meanwhile, Xia Rouyun was furious. Her beautiful eyes were icy, and her voice was cold as she transmitted, “Elder Jin Xuan, why can’t you give me any answers even now?”

This operation targeting Li Muchen was like a bundle of mysteries. Xia Rouyun couldn’t for the life of her figure out what was going on.

Eternal Lightning Court was a Heavenly Sovereign faction, but even they had no choice but to remain bystanders! Something strange was afoot here.

Jin Xun transmitted gravely, “There’s no need for me to explain. You’ll understand soon enough.”

According to Eternal Lightning Court’s agreement with the other sects, they couldn’t reveal the truth until after this death trap came to a close. It wasn’t just them, either. All of the major factions that knew the inside story had agreed to the same terms.

“It wasn’t easy to find a man who stirred my heart. What am I supposed to do if he just ups and dies?” murmured Xia Rouyun.

Jin Xun glowered at her. You’re still mooning over him even now? Can’t you see how serious this situation is?

“But…” Xia Rouyun’s eyes lit up. “It’s no wonder that Li Muchen managed to stir my heart. What other Unfettered Realm cultivator would be worth going to such lengths to set a trap for? It seems to me that Jun Liuxian, the man in first place in the Unfettered Rankings, the one the factions of the Five Great Factions praise to the high heavens, isn’t even worthy of carrying Li Muchen’s shoes!”

Xia Rouyun sneered. “Look at all these Heavenly Monarchs. All of them are famed, prominent experts, ancestral figures in their clans or elders in their respective sects, yet now, they’ve sunk so low as to join forces just to target Li Muchen. Feh! They’re nothing but a pack of shameless cravens. The more cowardly they are, the more impressive Li Muchen is by comparison!”

It seemed she was venting her anger, but of course, she knew better than to say any of that out loud. She transmitted her words directly to Heavenly Monarch Jin Xun.

Jin Xun glowered but took her words for no more than wind blowing past his ears.

Suddenly, low rumbling ran out, and appalling, sinful blood-red light surged out of the well at the center of the ritual grounds. The countless star corpses hovering overhead felt the impact, swaying as if about to fall. Soon, the entire city was shaking violently.

The crowd was startled. What’s happening?

“Quick, activate the formations!” Elder Fu Yong of the Heart-Tempering Sword House bellowed.

When that bloody, sinful power shot out of the well, it slammed into the four supreme killing formations first. When the formations took damage, there was a high risk of something going wrong.

“Activate the formations!”

A group of Heavenly Monarchs stepped forth to power the formations with all their might. Firelight flowed throughout heaven and earth. The formations’ power swept forth like the tides, creating all manner of unbelievable and strange phenomena throughout the ritual grounds.

The formations rumbled and boomed, blanketing the sky and blotting out the sun. The combined power of the four formations suppressed the power of sin rising out of the well.

But before the onlookers could so much as sigh in relief, the ancient well split, and countless cracks spread across the ritual grounds. Then, the entire ritual grounds sank, deeper and deeper!

“Don’t tell me that the Sin-Severing Dungeon has been destroyed?” Granny Snake furrowed her brow.

All of the hundred-plus Heavenly Monarchs were bewildered and uncertain. The disturbance was just too great!

It gave off the impression that an unpredictable, terrifying destructive power was erupting beneath the surface of the earth.

The Heavenly Monarchs circulating the formations didn’t dare to get complacent. They poured everything they had into their formations; only then did they manage to suppress that destructive power.

Off in the distance, Shang Wuhui couldn’t help but wonder, What’s going on?

In the Forgotten Palace, the Sword-Bearer’s gaze remained fixed on the wall. “The ruler of the Sin-Severing Dungeon has broken free. If all is as I suspect, the dungeon will soon be destroyed.”

Before his words had even finished echoing through Shang Wuhu’s heart… a loud boom was heard. A massive, startling impact rang out, as if heaven and earth were caving in. The collapsing ritual grounds shattered, and countless arcs of blood-red light burst forth, like floodwaters breaking through a dam. Their terrifying power slammed into the four killing formations.

The Heavenly Monarchs all looked stricken. Even if you’d hit them over the head, they never would have guessed that such a startling scene would appear alongside their target.

The cultivators watching from afar couldn’t help but gape.

Disaster broke out suddenly, affecting the entire Ancient Nine Luminaries City and severely damaging the four supreme killing formations!

What was going on?

“I just knew the ruler of the Sin Souls wouldn’t be able to resist seizing this opportunity to escape,” said Shang Wuhui, or rather, the Malevolent Sword Venerate wearing his face. Unlike the others present, he wasn’t the least bit surprised by this development.

As Jiang Wuchen’s reincarnation, he naturally knew that Jiang Wuchen had acquired the Laws of Rahu from the little girl in the Sin-Severing Dungeon! And he naturally understood how terrifying an existence she was. It was just… not even the Malevolent Sword Venerate had anticipated that she’d cause such an enormous commotion when she broke free of the Sin-Severing Dungeon. She’d even damaged his killing formations!

The Malevolent Sword Venerate wondered out loud, “Has the master of Sin Souls decided to cooperate with Su Yi?”

The answer to that question was critical!

“Not even a Heavenly Sovereign could force that existence to lower her head, and no one is qualified to ‘cooperate’ with her,” said the Sword-Bearer. “Otherwise, Heavenly Sovereign Zhenyue would have subdued her during the Devastation.”

In other words, “If Heavenly Sovereign Zhenyue couldn’t do it, others definitely couldn’t cut it!”

“Oh,” said the Malevolent Sword Venerate. And indeed, when he thought back to Jiang Wuchen’s meeting with the little girl, he agreed with the Sword-Bearer’s assessment.

The spirit of the Laws of Rahu was like the master of all evils. She really was extraordinarily dangerous.

Heavenly Sovereign Zhenyue had mastered the Laws of the Nine Luminaries, but even he had at most managed to confine her to the Sin-Severing Dungeon. He couldn’t truly destroy her!

How could an existence like that cooperate with an Unfettered Realm cultivator like Su Yi willingly? Was Su Yi worthy of that?
