Chapter 2793 – Tides of Disaster, the Mysteries of the Ancient City

A swath of resplendent light shot over from afar. These were none other than Yun Wiaojun, Xiao Chi, Wen Xiuran, and their respective Dao Protectors.

“Have you fought already? Did you win?” Xiao Chi asked as soon as he arrived.

He could tell at a glance that a battle had been fought here not long ago. When he saw Mo Lanhe meditating and treating his wounds, he instinctively assumed that Liu Tianchen and Li Muchen had just fought.

And that their Dao Protectors had fought, too!

Yun Qiaojun and Wen Xiuran saw it all, too.

“It seems Fellow Daoist Li was no match for you. Surely you’re satisfied now, right?” Wen Xiuran’s beautiful eyes landed on Liu Tianchen, and she flashed him a charming smile.

Liu Tianchen shook his head. “I lost.”

Wen Xiuran was flabbergasted. Yun Qiaojun and Xiao Chi exchanged glances. All of them were beside themselves with astonishment. He lost?

Then what’s the deal with Elder Mo Lanhe’s injuries?

Liu Tianchen grimaced. “Do you really think I’d joke about something so embarrassing?”

Only then did the others believe him, albeit just barely.

“How did you lose?” Wen Xiuran asked in confusion.

Liu Tianchen shook his head. “No need to go into it.”

Xue Sheng, a legacy disciple of Sevendeaths Court, and his Dao Protector had only recently died here. He naturally wasn’t willing to share any details.

Yun Qiaojun walked up to him and patted him on the shoulder. “Junior Apprentice Brother, you said earlier that although you won your match in the Nine Luminaries Dao Assembly, you took no honor in your victory. Are you convinced now?”

Liu Tianchen nodded. He was more than just convinced; he was overcome with amazement!

Meanwhile, Xiao Chi suddenly looked at Su Yi. “Fellow Daoist Li, how about we spar, too?”

His eyes lit up with excitement. “Rest assured. It’ll be a clash of the Grand Dao, and it’ll be just between us. I absolutely won’t let anyone else get involved!”

Liu Tianchen’s heart clenched. He hurriedly cried out, “Xiao Chi, please, listen to me: don’t do this!”

What kind of joke was this? Xue Sheng had been ranked thirty-first in the Unfettered Ranking. He was a heaven-defying monster, yet Li Muchen had defeated him in a single attack, even seizing his Nine Luminaries Medallion in the process. In the end, he’d died, his soul scattered into ash.

Xiao Chi was far weaker than Xue Sheng. Dueling Li Muchen was just asking for a beating!

“You lost, but that doesn’t mean I’ll lose too, does it? Step aside! Don’t even think of ruining my fun!” Xiao Chi couldn’t help but laugh.

He, Liu Tianchen, Yun Qiaojun, and Wen Xiuran had been friends for a long time, which was why he spoke without reservation.

When he realized that Xiao Chi had disregarded his warning, Liu Tianchen was inwardly frantic. Li Muchen killed Xue Sheng with ease. If Xiao Chi pisses him off, he’ll absolutely kill him, too!

He took a deep breath, then said with unprecedented solemnity, “Xiao Chi, we’ve known each other a long, long time. Do you think I’d joke about a clash of the Grand Dao?”

Xiao Chi was stunned. His brow furrowed.

Yun Qiaojun said, “We didn’t come to the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone to spar. Xiao Chi, you’ll get another chance later. Issue a formal challenge letter later, and arrange a spar at the Light Beam Sword Pavilion. I’m sure Fellow Daoist Li won’t refuse you then.”

Xiao Chi smiled and nodded. “Very well.”

Su Yi just stood in the distance, drinking wine noncommittally.

“Fellow Daoist Li, all of us are cultivators of the Literati Province, and the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone is full of unpredictable danger. We have to be on guard against the experts of the Five Great Continents, too. How about we travel together?” Yun Qiaojun smiled at Su Yi and clasped his fist.

This was the greatest Unfettered Realm cultivator in the Literati Continent. He was well-manned and elegant, his demeanor as pleasant as a spring breeze.

Su Yi smiled. “Sure, if you aren’t afraid I’ll cause trouble for you.”

Trouble? Yun Qiaojun smiled and took that as a show of modesty.

Xiao Chi and Wen Xiuran didn’t argue, either. In their eyes, the greatest danger of the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone wasn’t its natural disasters, but rather, the experts of the Five Great Continents.

It would naturally be best if Li Muchen joined them.

An hour later, Mo Lanhe had recovered somewhat, and the group set off, proceeding further into the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone.

Before they left, Yun Qiaojun, Xiao Chi, and the other unparalleled figures’ sects had given them detailed information about the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone. Moreover, they each carried a map.

Thus, they already knew which places had been picked clean, which held lethal danger, and which were most likely to contain unexcavated good fortune.

Su Yi had a similar map. Bu Meng had given it to him.

Of all the places on the map, it was the Ancient Nine Luminaries City that piqued Su Yi’s interest the most.

The Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone was an ancient battlefield leftover from the Devastation. The city was part of that ancient battlefield, too.

The ancient city was quite strange, with a taboo, mysterious air.

It was also considered the safest place in the entire Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone.

Once every seven days, a Tide of Calamity would sweep across the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone. When the time came, all manner of strange, terrifying cataclysms would appear throughout the forbidden zone.

Worse, the vengeful souls of departed Heavenly Monarchs and other strange beings would awaken from their slumber. They were utterly terrifying.

The only way to avoid disaster was to seek refuge in the Ancient Nine Luminaries City.

Thus, Su Yi and his companions absolutely had to make it there within seven days.

That aside, the city hid numerous secrets. Rumor had it that the Laws of the Nine Luminaries were hidden there, but that despite the passage of countless years, no one had ever mastered them in their entirety.

Still, some had acquired heaven-defying good fortune in the city, including the Laws of the Moon, Water, Metal, and Earth Luminaries. All were components of the greater Laws of the Nine Luminaries.

Someone else had once acquired a blood-red bridal dress. Later, a Heavenly Sovereign realized its true nature: it was a fragment of a supreme treasure fit for a Heavenly Sovereign!

Many others had found similar good fortune.

Thus, everyone who entered the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone went to the Ancient Nine Luminaries City, both to avoid disaster and to seek good fortune.

All of this had naturally drawn Su Yi’s attention.

Along the way, something suddenly occurred to Su Yi, and he transmitted a message to the jade pendant Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep was hiding in. “Did the several dozen Falling Star Stones that flew in on the Star Annihilation Gales have anything to do with you?”

“Why would you think that?” she asked right back.

“I watched the Star Annihilation Gales, and I noticed that the Falling Star Stones shouldn’t have flown toward us, yet for some reason, they did so anyway,” said Su Yi. “There’s no way it was a coincidence.”

“Maybe they were drawn here by one of your treasures,” said Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep.

“That’s impossible,” said Su Yi. “Trust me on that one; I understand my treasures far better than you do.”

“Then why do you suspect I did something?” asked the sheep.

Su Yi said casually, “The Laws of the Nine Luminaries are a manifestation of the Nine Luminaries Edict, a supreme Star Dao connected to destiny, and to the best of my knowledge, Old Lord Gouchen excels at nothing more than refining stars.”

His first incarnation’s heart devil had told him about Old Lord Gouchen. He apparently saw the starry skies as a chessboard and the individual stars as pawns. He used them to divine and contemplate the wonders of the shifting of the Grand Dao.

Old Lord Gouchen had two great passions.

The first was herding stars. Thus, he was often called the Master of the Stars.

The second was herding sheep. Anyone he defeated, he transformed into a sheep incapable of speech and tossed into a livestock pen.

Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep was a mysterious existence who’d fallen prey to Old Lord Gouchen’s poisonous hands.

That was why Su Yi suspected that she’d learned something about the Daos of the Stars during her time with Old Lord Gouchen.

“I have no idea who the ‘Old Lord Gouchen’ you speak of is,” said Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep. “All I can say is, the Falling Star Stones’ arrival did indeed have something to do with me.”

Su Yi was instantly excited. “You managed to guide the Falling Star Stones here, like moths to the flame. Does that mean that here in the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone, you can sense the presence of anything connected to the stars?”

The Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone was desolate and bleak. The ground was littered with the fragmented corpses of stars and dotted with Star Graves.

More importantly, the Laws of the Nine Luminaries were a Grand Dao of the Stars!

“It seems… I can?” said Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep, but she sounded a bit uncertain. “If not for my severe Dao Wounds, I could try exploring the Nine Luminaries Forbidden Zone personally.”

“When we get to the Ancient Nine Luminaries City, help me seek out the Laws of the Nine Luminaries,” said Su Yi. “If I master the Nine Luminaries Edict, I’ll give you a copy, too.”

Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep laughed coldly. “I see. So, you said all that because you want to exploit me!”

Su Yi laughed. “We’re working toward each other’s mutual benefit, that’s all. Well, do you agree?”

Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep fell briefly silent. “If I’m exposed, it’ll expose your identity, too. Aren’t you at all worried?”

She’d appeared by his side back in the God Domain, and she’d followed Su Yi ever since. Su Yi’s enemies knew it, too.

That meant that her concerns were highly likely to become a reality!

“How can you hope to acquire good fortune without risk?” said Su Yi. “If you agree, it’s settled.”

Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep fell silent, but it seemed her silence was a form of tacit acknowledgment.

Su Yi took out a jug of wine and drank in high spirits. Prior to this, he’d been struggling to figure out how to go about locating the Nine Luminaries Edict. Now, he saw hope in the form of Miss Baa Baa Black Sheep!

Meanwhile, Yun Qiaojun transmitted, “Junior Apprentice Brother, what exactly is going on with Li Muchen?”

After a moment’s silence, Liu Tianchen responded, “Senior Apprentice Brother, there’s too much on the line. Please allow me to keep this a secret.”

Yun Qiaojun nodded, a bit stunned. “Very well.”

Liu Tianchen hesitated, then said, “Senior Apprentice Brother, all I can say is, Fellow Daoist Li is strong. Very, very strong!”

Yun Qiaojun mulled that over, then said, “I’ll just ask you this. Is getting to know him a good thing or a bad thing?”

Liu Tianchen shook his head. “It’s hard to say.”

Yun Qiaojun sighed. “Then you’d best think it over carefully. There are no truly good or evil people in this world; when your starting point is different, so are your considerations.”

Liu Tianchen nodded.

As the two of them conversed, an unbelievable, miraculous scene suddenly unfolded beneath the dome of heaven.

A round full moon descended from the heavens over a mountainous star corpse.

The full moon was like a blade, its clear light illuminating the mountains and rivers even as it cleaved open the dead star.

A dreamlike, illusory female figure floated beneath the firmament. She reached, then grabbed, pulling a bundle of red flame out of the severed star corpse as if pulling a fishing net out of the water.
