Chapter 2754 - A Bolt of Lightning Stirs up the Wind and Rain
Chapter 2754 – A Bolt of Lightning Stirs up the Wind and Rain
Heaven and earth were desolate. All was silent.
Two figures approached the peak from afar, right out in the open. They naturally drew Yun Zhao’an and Shen Duqiu’s attention.
“We’ll know for sure if there are problems with those two or not when the hundred thousand Tiger Warriors and three thousand elites of Divine Stratagems Manor test their mettle,” said Yun Zhao’an, stroking his beard.
“We’ll just have to trouble you, then,” said Divine Preceptor Lu Yuan.
Yun Zhao’an drew the blood-red jade ruler from his waist and shook it. It suddenly let out a wondrous rumbling, like waves lapping the shore.
At the foot of the Mountain of Bitter Rains, the beating of drums boomed from within the dense encampment of soldiers.
The Tiger Warriors mounted their horses, drew their weapons, and got in formation!
Every last one of the Tiger Warriors was clad in armor glinting with cold light. They swept forth like the tides, their hoofbeats shattering the otherwise deathly silence. An austere, desolate atmosphere swept outward.
As they advanced, a group of soldiers readied ballistas shaped like hideous beasts, while a throng of archers strung their bows.
The Tiger Warriors of the Huaihuang Empire were the greatest force beneath the heavens. They fought with unparalleled valiance.
Rumor had it that even the mightiest of martial artists would be doomed if they found themselves surrounded by the Tiger Warriors.
A big-boned man with a graying beard rode at the forefront of the army atop a chestnut horse and gazed into the distance.
He was dressed in armor, and his blood-red cape billowed in the wind. This was the soul of the Tiger Warriors, General Meng Sansi.
“How could all one hundred thousand of us be necessary just to defeat two suicidal fools? Yun Zhao’an must be going senile,” grumbled Meng Sansi.
Two figures were walking toward him, a man in blue and a man in white. They were all alone, and they seemed pitifully insignificant compared to the one hundred thousand Tiger Warriors.
“Don’t underestimate our enemies. General Ma Yu of Southern Currents City and his soldiers swore on their lives that the two of them are immortals capable of summoning the wind and rain. He said they’re all powerful,” said Yun Zhao’an, his voice emanating from the mountaintop.
Meng Sansi froze, then burst into laughter. “If they’re immortals, then I’m an immortal’s granddaddy!”
Uproarious laughter emanated from the army, shaking the sky.
Over on the mountaintop, Yun Zhao’an furrowed his brow.
But before he could say anything, Meng Sansi said pompously, “Rest assured. The Tiger Immortals will kill them, be they gods or be they immortals!”
“We’ll kill them, be they gods or be they immortals!” chorused the Tiger Warriors, their voices going off like a thunderclap, shaking the sky and dispersing the clouds overhead.
Imperial Preceptor Lu Yuan sighed. “Meng Sansi sure lives up to his reputation. He ignited the Tiger Warriors’ murderous intent with just a few words.”
“Every last one of the Tiger Warriors is an elite, and every recruit has at least three years of experience on the battlefield prior to joining,” said Yun Zhao’an. “They represent the ironclad rule of the Huaihuang Empire!”
He’d only just said this when Meng Sansi bellowed, “Where are the ballistas! Fire!”
A rapid series of thunderous booms rang out as thick bolts flew into the air and fell like rain. All of them were aimed at the two figures in the distance.
It was like a sudden downpour of ballista bolts!
When the bolts hit the ground, they created massive craters. Rocks shattered on impact, and dust and dirt flew into the air.
But against all expectations, their targets vanished. The downpour failed to reach its target.
As clouds of dust rose into the air, Meng Sansi’s pupils constricted. Their targets had still been several thousand feet away, but now, they’d vanished like ghosts and reappeared a thousand feet closer!
“Those ballistas sure are terrifying. If a bolt hit me, I’d be nothing but a rotting, fragmented corpse,” said Pu Xuan, clucking his tongue.
He’d asked Su Yi why they didn’t disguise themselves and just sneak onto the mountain.
Su Yi’s response was simple. “Why go to all that trouble?”
Thus, the two of them just walked directly in.
“In the mundane world, ballistas are supreme killer weapons. I just wonder whether or not they can kill those at the pinnacle of the Martial Dao,” Su Yi said casually, gazing at the leader of the Tiger Warriors, General Meng Sansi.
Su Yi clasped his fist. “Please don’t misunderstand. We’re just here to climb the mountain. We have no intention of opposing you.”
He’s just here to climb the mountain? Meng Sansi was so angry that he laughed. “A grand army stands before you. You’re in no position to look down on the Tiger Warriors!”
He waved to his soldiers. “Archers! Fire!”
Whoosh!
Countless arrows soared through the sky, like fierce winds and pelting rain. They enveloped the entire area between the army and Su Yi.
Another volley followed the first.
But before any of the arrows landed, Su Yi and Pu Xuan vanished once more.
“Where did they go?” Meng Sansi’s eyes widened.
“We’re over here,” said a voice.
Meng Sansi looked down. His heart shook. He wasn’t sure when, but two figures now stood directly beside his horse.
The young man in blue was smiling at him. “General, they say you should always capture a hostile force’s leader first. Had I wanted to kill you, your head would have hit the ground already.”
The entire army fell silent. All one hundred thousand Tiger Warriors were stunned.
In their years on the battlefield, they’d slaughtered countless powerful foes, but this was their first time encountering an enemy so strange.
Meng Sansi’s expression darkened. “Even if I die, the Tiger Warriors’ will to fight will never waver! Want to kill the leader first? Go ahead and try it!”
He raised his right hand. “Get in formation and attack!”
As he spoke, he and his horse retreated, and he swung his saber to defend himself.
But against all expectations, the young man in blue didn’t seize the opportunity to attack. Instead, he and the man in white vanished once more.
Boom!
The hundred thousand Tiger Warriors got in formation, but they’d lost sight of their targets. For a moment, they froze, all of them exchanging bewildered glances.
What’s going on?
At the foot of the mountain, there stood a worn-out stele embedded in the earth at an angle. It was full of the vicissitudes of countless years.
This place was past the army of Tiger Warriors, but the three thousand elites of Divine Stratagems Manor were positioned on the slopes up ahead.
They watched as two men appeared before the stele like ghosts.
The young man in blue bent at the waist to look at the stele. The sight made the three thousand elites gasp, their expressions shifting dramatically.
The Tiger Warriors guarding the mountain had achieved nothing at all; they might as well have been there for decoration. Their targets had slipped right past them!
Are these… really immortals? Could any martial artist possibly have achieved such a feat?
Before long, Meng Sansi and the Tiger Warriors discovered this, too. All of them were unwittingly rooted to the spot.
They’d been just about to kill their enemies when their enemies reappeared behind them, without them sensing a thing.
Even someone as fearless as Meng Sansi couldn’t help but break out in cold sweats. His gaze was grimmer than ever before.
“There really is something strange about those two outsiders!” Lu Yuan said with a frown.
“Let me test them,” said Yun Zhao’an. He flashed through the air and shot toward the foot of the mountain, reaching it in just a few breaths of time.
He waved his hand. “Meng Sansi, take your people and retreat!”
Meng Sansi was no fool. He knew that, had their targets attacked, he’d have died a long time ago!
He promptly ordered the Tiger Warriors to retreat, but they didn’t leave the area entirely. Instead, they got in formation several thousand feet away, weapons pointed at the foot of the mountain.
“You retreat too.” Yun Zhao’an glanced at the three thousand elites of Divine Stratagems Manor.
“Understood!”
The three thousand elites promptly retreated.
Su Yi ignored all this. From beginning to end, he was focused on examining the worn-out stone stele at the foot of the mountain.
The stele was carved with a simple, crude Edict. The writing was indistinct, but Su Yi could roughly discern that it read “Divine Hunt.”
There was nothing else noteworthy about it.
On their way to the Huaihuang Empire, Sword Monarch Mu Qing of True Martial Sword Court told him about the Nine Edicts of Heaven’s Will.
Each of the nine had its own mysteries, and all of them represented one of the Laws of the Will of the Heavens here in the Eternal Heavens Domain!
The Divine Hunt Edict was one of the nine. It represented hunting and killing. Anyone who violated its rules would become the prey of Heaven’s Will, which would in turn hunt them down.
Thus, anywhere the Divine Hunt Edict appeared was considered a forbidden zone. None would dare to venture there lightly.
Because the Edict represented a warning from the Will of the Heavens!
Seeing such an Edict here in a mundane nation seemed unquestionably unbelievable.
Pu Xuan stood to the side. When he saw Yun Zhao’an appear, he just smiled and said nothing.
Yun Zhao’an pondered briefly, then clasped his fist at Su Yi and opened his mouth as if to say something.
But then, Su Yi casually swung his sleeve.
Boom!
Dazzling lightning serpents fell from the heavens, tearing through the sky and illuminating the landscape.
Their majestic power startled the one hundred thousand Tiger Warriors and the three thousand elites of Divine Stratagems Manor. Their hair stood on end.
Meng Sansi’s face paled.
He’d only just proclaimed himself “an immortal’s granddaddy” and said they’d kill their enemies, be they gods or immortals. In truth, all of that was nothing but talk intended to boost his troops’ morale.
Now, he suddenly realized that the young man in blue… really was an otherworldly being!
He could summon a rain of lightning with a wave of his sleeves!
But within moments, all of the lightning condensed into a single beam of light and shot into Su Yi’s sleeve.
He was still looking at the stele, but now, his lips moved. “Could you block that?”
Yun Zhao’an shook his head.
He was the Master of Divine Stratagems Manor, one of the four supreme experts of the Huaihuang Empire, but now, his face was deathly pale, and his robes were drenched with sweat.
An immortal! This has got to be an immortal! He’s nothing like a mortal martial artist!
“Then step back,” said Su Yi. He retracted his gaze, then slowly stood up. “Send the person who put a bounty on my head to me.”
As he spoke, he couldn’t help but glance at Yun Zhao’an. The master of Divine Stratagems Manor was visibly ill at ease, but his qi flowed smoothly, and his will was like iron. It was actually quite rare and impressive.
Meanwhile, on the mountaintop, Imperial Preceptor Lu Yuan’s expression was as dark as could be, and Shen Duqiu’s expression shifted erratically.
The lightning descending from the heavens was like the imposing majesty of the heavens. Both of them were stunned.
Even though they’d reached the pinnacle of the Martial Dao, and even though they were just one step away from shattering the skies and ascending… the sight of lightning pouring down from the nine heavens filled them with bone-deep dread.
It was like the wrath of the heavens!
When Su Yi asked to see him, the imperial preceptor lost his cool; he realized how serious the problem was.
From beginning to end, Xiao Zhiyuan just sat there drinking, gazing at the clouds over the cliffside. The mountain winds rustled his long hair, and he was bleary-eyed from drinking.
