Chapter 2695 - A Duel Over Eternity
Chapter 2695 – A Duel Over Eternity
The waters of the River of Destiny surged in an endless flow.
Su Wanjun stood atop the waves, unmoving as the coursing river lapped at her fair, delicate, unshod feet.
The dreamlike red sword qi in her hand silently transformed, becoming more solid, like a real sword. It emanated a heart-palpitating crimson sword rain.
The young monk clasped his palms and said, “If we fight here, I’ll be like a dragon returning to the sea, but as someone from the Far Shore of Destiny, I’m afraid you’ll face a backlash from the natural order.”
Su Wanjun’s eyes shone with reminiscence.
A long time ago, she traversed the River of Destiny, leading a white mule as she searched for traces of that swordsman.
Before she knew it, far, far too many years had passed.
Now, she’d returned to familiar territory after countless years away. She couldn’t help but feel as if lifetimes had passed.
After a while, she nodded. “Mm, the suppression of the Laws of Destiny will prevent me from displaying even half my power.”
The young monk smiled faintly. “This humble monk has already made it clear that he wishes to withdraw from this conflict. I’m sure you’re concerned about your fellow Daoists’ safety. How about we each take a step back and go our separate ways?”
“Let me cut you just once first,” said Su Wanjun. “If you live, you’re free to go.”
The young monk’s austere countenance gave way to a frown. Buddhist light flowed across his skin, and his cultivation rose continuously. The hundred thousand feet of coursing river water surrounding the lotus platform beneath his feet froze in place, unmoving.
Only Heavenly Sovereigns should have been capable of that!
This was, after all, the River of Destiny. Here, even Heavenly Monarchs had to proceed with the utmost caution for fear of being washed away.
“Once?” The young monk said with confidence, “Why so few? How about I give you three free hits instead?”
On Red Pine Mountain, he’d suppressed his cultivation base as much as he could. That was why he’d fared so badly in his match with Lin Jinghong.
But things were different from now. Here on the River of Destiny, his cultivation base was comparable to that of a Heavenly Sovereign! All he lacked was an opportunity to assume control over his own Eternal Throne.
And the Spirit Mountain Buddhist Court just so happened to have an unoccupied Eternal Throne!
Still, the young monk didn’t dare to get complacent. As he spoke, he circulated his cultivation base to the limit. His body was like an endlessly majestic, towering mountain planted on the River of Destiny, glowing with endless radiance.
Su Wanjun just glanced at him and attacked directly, flashing through the air like a beam of crimson sword light.
Moments later, a perfectly straight, bloody gash tore open on the majestic young monk’s body.
Su Wanjun, meanwhile, reappeared a thousand feet away, sleeves fluttering, ethereal and transcendent.
Suddenly, a massive sword gash tore open on the River of Destiny, extending fully one million feet.
Sword qi as red as blood shot in all directions, dyeing the boundless river water a striking shade of red.
“Want to try taking two more strikes?” asked Su Wanjun.
The young monk looked down at the cut on stomach, then laughed bitterly. “Your Sword Dao is limitless. This humble monk is convinced of his defeat, ashamed and ill at ease.”
“You survived one of my attacks. Even those Heavenly Sovereigns are inferior to you.” Su Wanjun sighed. “If I’d known, I’d have put a bit more power into it and shattered that Śarīra-like Eternal Dao Root of yours.”
The young monk stiffened, then sighed. “I guarantee you that the Spirit Mountain Buddhist Court will not oppose Su Yi again within the next hundred years.”
Su Wanjun spun her wrist, shifting her grip on that red sword qi, then walked off without a word. She just floated away, paying her opponent no further heed.
Her graceful figure was like a beam of flowing light, gone in a flash.
The young monk stood there and let out a long sigh.
The blood-red gash on his stomach didn’t look like much, but it had destroyed half of his vital energy and reduced his organs to pulp. Even his foundations in the Grand Dao, fused with the Dao Imprints of three lifetimes, had cracked!
Just a little more force, and she’d have destroyed his foundations in the Grand Dao completely!
It would have been no exaggeration to say that she had indeed almost knocked him back into the red dust of mundanity. She’d come close to destroying him completely!
Is everyone from the Far Shore of Destiny this unreasonably strong…? The young monk grimaced. I told her I could take three strikes without a problem, but…
Even though his heart was as firm as a boulder, he couldn’t help but feel embarrassed.
He knew that he was getting out of this alive simply because the woman in white was in a hurry to rush to her friends’ aid.
He also knew that she’d long since seen through him. She knew about the hunk of a Buddha’s bone he held in his palm, and that it could save him from otherwise certain death.
That was why she’d chosen not to linger.
Still, no matter what, he’d lost today, and badly at that. He could forget about recovering from these wounds any time soon!
After a while, the young monk’s gaze filled with determination once more, and he proceeded deeper in the River of Destiny. Su Yi, I underestimated you this time, but… it won’t happen again!
He was like a dragon returning to the sea, and he’d fused the Dao Imprints of three lives. Once he made it back to the Spirit Mountain Buddhist Court, he could succeed its Eternal Throne and assume power.
When the time came, he’d naturally be able to break the barrier of the Far Shore of Destiny and see just how high the heavens of the All-Profound Dominion really were.
The River of Destiny was dotted with numerous mysterious and strange Eternal Gateways.
Some Eternal Gateways hid good fortune, opportunities, and ancient hidden realms, while others hid life-or-death peril.
They were scattered across the River of Destiny like the stars dotting the night sky.
Meanwhile, in one such Eternal Gateway, there stood an ancient battlefield.
Here, heaven and earth were bleak and devoid of life. The ground lay in ruin, and all was desolate.
A battle was underway. Both sides consisted of experts who’d transcended the River of Destiny. They were far beyond the experts of the Five Realms of Eternity.
“Ol’ Gongye, so many epochs have come and gone since we last saw each other, but your cultivation base hasn’t improved a bit,” said one of the fighters, a ten-foot-tall man in bronze armor.
He swung his spear with ruthless force. Wherever it pointed, heaven and earth collapsed, and all facets of creation broke.
The man’s features were coarse, but his eyes shone like twin suns. His divine majesty was utterly terrifying, and heaven and earth shook with every breath he took.
He counted himself among the earliest masters of the Dao of the Spear. With his spear, he’d broken past the limits of the Five Realms of Eternity to reach the Far Shore of the River of Destiny!
Li Shouhu was an extraordinary expert even in the All-Profound Dominion on the Far Shore of Destiny.
Two others fought alongside him.
The first was an old man in wide-sleeved Confucian robes. He had a fair, beardless face, and he carried a purple jade scepter. Each end had a Luan, wings extended as if preparing to launch itself into the sky.
When he swung the scepter, the Luan cried out, and a wave of purple qi swept forth, filling the sky with ancient text.
The Confucian was working with Li Shouhu to defeat Gongye Futu.
Meanwhile, in another section of the ancient battlefield, Li Shouhu’s second companion was fighting the River Lord.
He was a thin sword cultivator in black, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. His long hair was coarse and scraggly, and his eyes were terrifying to behold. His sword was massive, as if he were swinging a door around. The blade was covered in countless minute, yet dazzling blood-red markings of the Grand Dao.
Every time he swung it, he tore open startling, blood-red rifts in heaven and earth. His murderous intent was so overwhelming that it shook the entire hidden realm.
The sword cultivator in black was the strongest of his group, followed by Li Shouhu. The elderly Confucian was the weakest.
Even so, any one of them could have travelled the River of Destiny without fear, and even the Heavenly Sovereigns would have had to treat them with deference!
In truth, the three of them were experts, not just by the standards of the River of Destiny, but by the standards of the All-Profound Dominion, too!
“Fuck you, Li Shouhu. Back then, in Sword Sovereign City, the boss beat you like a grandson. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten?” jeered Gongye Futu.
He’d hit Li Shouhu right where it hurt. Li Shouhu’s expression contorted viciously, and he laughed, “How dare you even bring it up? That damned place has long since been flattened! As for you, Gongye Futu, you’re like a half-drowned dog; your cultivation base isn’t even half of what it was at your former peak. It’s pathetic!”
Kaboom!
As they conversed, the battle raged with ever-greater intensity.
The River Lord was still locked in combat with the swordsman in black, but when he saw this, concern arose on his brow.
Gongye Futu’s tongue was mercilessly sharp, but his predicament was dire. Li Shouhu and the old Confucian were gradually suppressing him. At this rate, he wouldn’t last much longer.
But it was all the River Lord could do to suppress the sword cultivator in black. He wouldn’t be able to win any time soon.
“Hei Ya, I really didn’t think you’d join forces with those two scoundrels,” the River Lord said suddenly. “The boss was right about you. You were born with a traitorous, unjust heart. It’s no wonder he expelled you from Sword Sovereign City!”
The swordsman in black, Hei Ya, suddenly grinned. “Your boss is nothing but a crock of shit. The geezer dropped dead a long time ago!”
Hei Ya looked young, but his skin was so pale that he looked sickly.
Most striking of all, he had a sword scar between his eyes. It wasn’t big, just three inches total. It was almost like a centipede crawling across his face.
When he grinned, he flashed his pearly white teeth. He looked sickly, yet utterly vicious.
When he heard Hei Ya insult his boss, the River Lord frowned. He couldn’t even imagine why Hei Ya was acting like this.
This is the man who approached Sword Sovereign City, bowing at every step, then knelt outside its gates for a hundred years, all for a chance to enter the city and become a sword servant. What happened to him?
“The boss isn’t dead,” said the River Lord. “Sword Sovereign City might have fallen, and the All-Profound Dominion might have changed, but so long as the boss lives, everyone who violated the pact is sure to one day be punished.”
The River Lord’s eyes glinted with mockery. “If you weren’t worried that the boss would come back to settle the score, why would you have paid such a heavy price to interfere with events on the River of Destiny?”
