The gates of Sundial City swung open.
Su Yi put away his gourd of wine and commanded, “Ol’ Wan, you stay here. I’ll go have a look around.”
“You have to be careful,” said Wan Zitian. “If you can’t do it, don’t force it. Your life comes first.”
Su Yi nodded, and was just about to proceed toward Sundial City when the young woman, Hong Li, suddenly said, “Be careful.”
Su Yi was stunned. He turned to look at her and said, “Is something wrong?”
She shook her head. “There’s nothing wrong, just… be careful.”
Su Yi smiled, then turned to leave.
The group gathered outside the city watched him vanish past the gates. Countless streaks of temporal light instantly surged forth, covering the entrance once more.
Wan Zitian suddenly asked the tall young man, “Why aren’t you going back?”
“When someone explores Sundial City, the power of its Laws shifts. If my junior apprentice sister and I returned now, we’d face inauspicious calamity, too,” said the stalwart young man. “If that happened, not even our master would be able to save us.”
Only then did Wan Zitian understand.
But then, he noticed that Master Cloud Refiner, Hua Yin, and the other old monsters were headed their way. His heart was instantly solemn, and his brow furrowed. “What are you trying to do?”
The tall young man sensed this too. He said with seething murderous intent, “You’d best learn some respect. This is Sundial City. It isn’t a place where the likes of you can act wantonly!”
“Don’t misunderstand,” Master Cloud Refiner said with a wave. “We have no malicious intentions.”
“What are you here for, then?” said Wan Zitian. There was no outward change in his expression, but in truth, he was on guard.
Master Cloud Refiner pondered briefly, then said, “Fellow Daoist Su is exploring Sundial City, and he won’t be back for a while. Might we use this opportunity to learn more about him?”
Hua Yin, Lu Song, and the others nodded repeatedly. They knew almost nothing about Su Yi, and they were desperate to know just what kind of person this “Bringer of Order” who’d mastered reincarnation was.
“Truly?” Wan Zitian was a bit stunned.
“I wouldn’t joke about such a thing,” Master Cloud Refiner said solemnly. “Especially not with Celestial Venerate Zhou Ye’s disciple here. How could we possibly do anything so foolish?”

The group promptly sat down and listened as Wan Zitian began his tale.

Meanwhile, a roughly ten-foot-tall black sundial stood at the center of Sundial City. Its round surface was carved into twelve sections.
It looked ordinary, and even a bit worn out and mottled.
But the moment Su Yi entered the city, the sundial that had stood there for countless years suddenly underwent a strange transformation.
A wisp of temporal light surged forth, illuminating the sundial like a lamp.
A needle appeared at its center, and as time passed, it travelled along the Sundial, then pointed at the Hour of the Rat.
Boom!!
The dazzling power of the natural order surged throughout Sundial City, intertwining like a spiderweb and spreading out in all directions.
These were the Laws of Time!
And now, they’d enveloped the entire city.
Only the sundial remained as it was, like a needle stabilizing the ocean, unmoving even as the Laws of Time surged around it.
“During the Hour of the rat, murderous intent rises. Fellow Daoist Su… that fatty thinks the world of you. He thinks you’re the first person in history with a real shot at mastering the complete Supreme Emergence Source Power. I hope… you can succeed…”
A soft, hoarse voice echoed throughout the city.
Then, everything returned to stillness.
Meanwhile, Su Yi found himself in a dark stretch of heaven and earth. All was barren and devoid of life, and everything seemed shrouded in darkness akin to an eternal night.
The Hour of the Rat was in the middle of the night.
Su Yi surveyed his surroundings, pondered briefly, then continued ahead.
This unknown world condensed within Sundial City was a true land of illusions.
It was “true” in the sense that everything really existed. These were no visions; they were tangible manifestations of the city’s power.
But they were illusions, too, because this unfamiliar world would change with the demarcation of the hours on the Blazing Sundial.

Suddenly, heaven and earth swayed in the distance.
Immediately afterward, an army of monsters appeared, so numerous that their ranks blanketed heaven and earth. All of them instantly swarmed at Su Yi.
The monsters were all rats, except they were each the size of a small mountain. Their fur was tawny gray, their teeth were as long and sharp as halberds, and their blood-red eyes shone like lanterns.
Their whole bodies were swathed in unsettling dark light capable of corroding even the sky itself; pits appeared in the surrounding air, one after another.
It was a startling sight. Even Su Yi couldn’t help but gasp. Every last one of those rats has an aura comparable to a Master God!
The weakest were like One-Tribulation Master Gods, while the strongest could compete with Nine-Tribulation Master Gods!
‘Zi’ corresponds to the first animal of the zodiac, the rat. These monsters must be manifestations of Sundial City’s power! It’s no wonder that not even Nine-Tribulation Master Gods dare to draw close to Sundial City. This place… really is far too inauspicious!

That aside, Su Yi could say with certainty that anyone who tried to avoid the swarm by flying would invite an onslaught of the light of time.

I just wonder where the Realm Guardian is hiding. If I can find and defeat him, will I be able to leave early?
