First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2123 - What Breadth of Spirit

Chapter 2123 – What Breadth of Spirit

Su Yi fell silent. He really hadn’t anticipated encountering his third incarnation in the sixth divine tower’s final trial!

“Why are you here?” asked Su Yi.

His third incarnation seemed to realize what he was thinking at a glance. He chuckled and said, “Relax. It was our first incarnation who left the Nine Great Celestial Trials here, and not even I can change their rules. I naturally won’t deliberately make things hard on you here.”

Su Yi said thoughtfully, “So that means you were once invincible amongst Mid-Rank Gods throughout the epochs?”

His third incarnation inclined his head. “That was a long time ago. Back then, I was merely invincible within the Limit Realm, that’s all. It’s not even worth mentioning.”

He spoke calmly and casually, as if he really didn’t take this accomplishment to heart.

Still, Su Yi could hear the pride and confidence behind his words!

After all, becoming the greatest Mid-Rank God of any given epoch civilization was enough to call yourself unparalleled. Becoming the greatest Mid-Rank God throughout epochs both past and present was even more terrifying than that!

No matter where he went, he’d be the most heaven-defying existence around, completely unequaled!

But his third incarnation didn’t take this accomplishment to heart. This was a display of his incomparable pride and confidence, and an expression of his ambition. An accomplishment like that meant nothing to him!

“Come on then, let me experience your attainments in the Grand Dao,” said his third incarnation, his gaze as clear as still waters. “You needn’t worry about dying; I won’t kill you here.”

“Might we chat a bit before we fight?” asked Su Yi.

This was his first meeting with his third incarnation. The thought that this was one of his past incarnations made him feel a bit strange.

His third incarnation had a rather strange look in his eyes, too. He obviously understood what Su Yi was thinking.

After all, Su Yi was his reincarnation, too!

“If you win, I’ll naturally meet with you after you’ve left the Nine Great Celestial Trials, but if you lose…” His third incarnation’s eyes were utterly emotionless as he said slowly and clearly, “There will be no need for us to meet again.”

Su Yi could tell that although his third incarnation revealed no obvious enmity for him, he wasn’t friendly, either, and he even detected a hint of distaste!

He wasted no more time on talk and gestured to his opponent.

His third incarnation suddenly moved. When he took a step forward, it was as if ten thousand swords had attacked at once.

Dazzling sword qi encompassed heaven and earth, like a raging downpour. It was enough to overturn mountains and seas!

Every streak of sword qi was imblazoned with utterly tyrannical mysteries of the Grand Dao.

When they appeared, it was like countless unparalleled gods of the sword were attacking as one.

Su Yi’s pupils constricted, but he didn’t retreat. He leaped into the fray, a dense abyss of the power of reincarnation reflected behind him. It blanketed the sky and blotted out the sun, all the while brimming with mysterious, inscutable sword intent. It seemed intent on crushing and devouring the nine heavens and the ten earths.

Boom!

Just like that, a clash between him and himself broke out amidst the sea of chaos clouds atop the sixth divine tower.

Countless streaks of sword qi flew through the air and cleaved into the abyss of reincarnation, producing a heaven-shaking impact.

The power of reincarnation continually devoured the sword qi, but it was just too tyrannical and terrifying. When it landed, the entire abyss trembled violently.

Within moments, it exploded with a bang, and Su Yi was sent flying.

His eyebrows rose. His third incarnation was terrifying: even stronger than his first two opponents, with no apparent weaknesses or openings to exploit!

Su Yi dared not let his mind wander, so he cast aside his scattered thoughts and quelled his inner turmoil. His heart was instantly as clear as the moonlit skies.

His essence, qi, spirit, and will to fight fused, and he forgot himself completely.

“Die!” He leaped forward, robes fluttering around him as endless sword qi flew from his hand.

Some were like the river of stars flowing in reverse.

Some were like volcanic eruptions.

Some were like swiftly dancing beams of light.

Still others were like primordial divine mountains in motion.

Su Yi had practically instantaneously entered a wondrous state of enlightenment mid-combat. His Hidden Summit Realm cultivation base was on full display.

It wasn’t that his powers of comprehension were so startling, but that his third incarnation put far too much pressure on him. His terrifying power made Su Yi erupt with latent potential!

“You’ve at least found your own path to the Dao of the Sword. It’s no wonder you became a Transgressor before even achieving divinity, and no wonder you can defeat opponents of higher cultivations.”

His third incarnation’s eyes flashed, but even as he spoke, he didn’t hold back. He swung his sleeve through the air, and a Dao Sword condensed in his grip.

Then, he swung his sword and attacked.

Every movement was one of the basics practiced by mortal swordsmen: he cut, cleaved, sliced, flicked, shook, spun, and thrust. They were as simple as could be.

But his attainments in the Dao of the Sword were wondrous and terrifying to the point of transforming trash into treasure, the mundane into the transcendent. These seemingly simple movements neutralized every attempt Su Yi made to attack.

When his third incarnation attacked, he put enormous pressure on Su Yi. He sensed a crisis on all sides!

Bang!

Just ten snaps of the fingers later, his third incarnation cleaved through his attacks, sending Su Yi flying. A faint, bloody gash tore open on his chest.

Any deeper, and he’d have been disemboweled!

“The greatest sounds are inaudible, and the greatest forms are shapeless. The same ought to be true of the sword. You must eliminate the dross and retain the essence. Your sword intent and heart must be as one, and your sword must move naturally with you, like an extension of your body.”

Su Yi’s third incarnation shook his head. “Your attainments in the Dao of the Sword are extraordinary, but they’re lacking a ‘force’ that’s truly yours.”

With that, he turned his sword and pressed down, as simple a gesture as could be.

Boom!

A streak of sword qi descended without the slightest flourish.

But in Su Yi’s eyes, the descending strike was like the collapsing dome of heaven. All of creation seemed to crumble. It was as if the heavens themselves were punishing him, while he was as paltry and insignificant as an ant. He felt more helpless than ever before.

This was sword force! The force and momentum imbued within sword intent! It seemed almost real, and it could intimidate opponents’ souls and throw their Dao Hearts into chaos!

Most opponents would feel helpless, restricted, and defeated before they even tried to fight back. In that state, they’d be little more than lambs to the slaughter!

But Su Yi wasn’t intimidated. His attainments in the Dao of the Sword might have been somewhat inferior to his third incarnation’s, but his Dao Heart and soul were unshakable. Not even this overwhelming sword force could really affect him.

“Take this!” Su Yi didn’t retreat. Instead, he advanced, swinging his fist like a sword.

Bang!!

The descending sword qi shattered into countless fragments of light. It cleaved through Su Yi’s defenses, leaving him looking wretched and haggard.

But his third incarnation was unwittingly stunned. “Reincarnating repeatedly has given you an unbreakable soul and Dao Heart. It’s truly extraordinary!”

His earlier slash could have intimidated the soul of even a Fortune Realm Greater God, dealing them a massive mental setback, but Su Yi was entirely unaffected. Of course he was surprised!

“My turn.” Su Yi extended and flicked his fingers. A streak of sword qi rose into the air and landed in his palm. Then, he took a step forward and attacked, displaying the mysteries of reincarnation through his Dao of the Sword.

Passively defending himself wasn’t Su Yi’s style. That wasn’t how sword cultivators did things!

The Dao of the Sword was for killing. Sword cultivators faced life and death with equanimity and forged boldly ahead!

This was unmatched courage and unshakable momentum!

Boom!

All of Su Yi’s latent potential erupted at once. As he fused the power of his heart and soul into his sword, his swordsmanship grew even stronger.

His third incarnation’s eyes shone with a strange light as he defended himself.

Sword qi crisscrossed throughout the sea of chaos clouds, and the humming of a sword boomed throughout the nine heavens like the low rumble of thunder.

Su Yi’s injuries piled on, but his sword qi had cleaved into his third incarnation repeatedly, too.

Were outsiders here to see this, this unparalleled, unprecedented battle would surely have left them stunned. Such battles were just too rare. This was perhaps the most unbelievable clash of the Dao of the Sword in history!

Because Su Yi was locked in combat with his third incarnation!

Upon closer inspection, it wasn’t hard to discover numerous commonalities between them. Both of them struck with unstoppable force, and neither retreated in the slightest. Both had terrifying attainments in the Dao of the Sword, and both had washed away everything extraneous and achieved a return to simplicity. Their powers of the Grand Dao had reached almost unprecedented, irreplicable heights.

Even their bearing and momentum were much alike!

But they were ultimately not the same.

Su Yi’s third incarnation was simple to the extreme, the embodiment of the phrases, “great skill conceals itself” and “the greatest forms are shapeless.” Despite its simplicity, it seemed to seize fortune from the heavens and transform trash into treasure.

It was like his sword was the manifestation of the Grand Dao, naturally formed, without the slightest artifice.

That was exactly what made it seem so unassailable.

Su Yi’s Dao of the Sword had a similar charm to it, but with more of a shifting quality.

It was like the phrase, “The Dao gave rise to one, one gave rise to two, two gave rise to three, and three gave rise to all things.” It was like an endless, self-perpetuating cycle with the transformations of the Grand Dao on full display.

When Su Yi swung his sword and attacked, it was as if he were displaying the alternations of the Grand Dao, and the shifting of worldly affairs. Everything was embodied in his sword.

Neither Dao of the Sword was necessarily superior, but they were starkly different. Victory would come down to their personal abilities.

Within moments, Su Yi was covered in heavy wounds, and his blue robes were stained completely red.

But his force and momentum were like an unparalleled treasure sword undergoing tempering in a raging furnace. They were incomparably domineering, dazzling, sharp, and unstoppable!

Truly incredible. He’s obviously using his Dao of the Sword as a furnace. He wants to fuse all Daos into his sword, and use his sword to manifest all Daos!

Ripples coursed through Su Yi’s third incarnation’s heart.

He was a sword cultivator too, a fellow reincarnation of their first incarnation, and an unparalleled legend of the Dao of the Sword in his own right!

More importantly, he and Su Yi were ultimately the same person. It was only natural that he could discern many of the mysteries of Su Yi’s swordsmanship.

Were that the extent of it, it would be one thing.

The real crux of the matter was that Su Yi had obviously fused the taboo, mysterious power of reincarnation into his swordsmanship, too. He was using it to support his Dao of the Sword, not the other way around

This was what really surprised Su Yi’s third incarnation.

This was, after all, the power of reincarnation! The unsurpassed power that maintained the order of the Path of the Ancient Gods and the alternations of the past, present, and future! This was a power mighty enough to strike terror into the hearts of even the rulers of epoch civilizations!

Anyone who acquired this power would want to use it as the foundation of their Grand Dao!

But Su Yi was doing no such thing. He simply treated reincarnation as yet another power he could fuse into his Dao of the Sword!

Even his third incarnation couldn’t help but sigh. What breadth of spirit!
