First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 2018: Undying and Indestructible

False gods hadn’t condensed Godheads. They were thus not considered true gods. Still, their strength was far beyond that of demigods.

When Su Yi’s slash landed, Ol’ Fiend Thunder immediately sensed the impending crisis. He didn’t hesitate to draw on his full power and raise the Bagua mirror into the air.

He then activated it with the full power of his cultivation base.

Boom!

The Bagua Mirror erupted with golden flames, manifesting a perfectly round, sacred barrier that blocked the descending sword qi.

Alas, Ol’ Fiend Thunder underestimated how terrifying this strike was. It descended with the weight of a falling mountain.

The barrier broke beneath its ruthless pressure. It was instantly under terrifying suppression, and it swayed violently. Spiderweb-like cracks formed on its surface.

Ol’ Devil Thunder’s expression shifted, and chills coursed through his heart. This is the power of a young Great Profound Stage cultivator!?

He dared not hesitate. His hair and beard bristled, and he bit through the tip of his tongue and waved his fly whisk through the air.

The whisk was snow-white, like the river of stars flowing in reverse. It brought with it a horrifying rain of the light of the Laws, and it could have slaughtered even demigods with ease.

Sword qi and fly whisk clashed, producing all-encompassing ripples of destructive power that spread to the nearby waters, stirring up towering waves and turbulent currents.

In the end, a violent rumbling rang out, and the whisk’s power was neutralized!!

Ol’ Fiend Thunder coughed up blood as he was thrown ruthlessly back.

Only the woman in the conical hat, Li Shuang, remained standing. When sword qi slew the man in beast skins, an invisible power swept over her, carrying her into the sky and dropping her onto the nearby landmass with such force that she saw stars.

She recovered her senses just in time to see Ol’ Fiend Thunder forced back. The sight left her unwittingly stunned.

Everyone was dumbstruck, including Wu Lingchong.

This scene was far too shocking.

Ol’ Fiend Thunder and his cohort fled and the leader of the evil spirits attacked practically the moment Su Yi counted to three.

Su Yi attacked a moment later, yet sword qi filled heaven and earth with a swing of his sleeves, crushing the attack of the leader of the evil spirits.

Then, a single palm strike slaughtered two demigods and dealt a false god a massive setback!!

It was just too tyrannical. The situation turned completely on its head the moment Su Yi took action.

It was like the ancient saying. He really could “flip his hand to summon clouds, and turn it again to create rain.”

“That kid…” The leader of the evil spirits gasped, his bright red eyes full of astonishment.

The other evil spirits’ expressions shifted, too. There were false gods, demigods, and ghost gods present. Who could have imagined that a young Great Realm cultivator could suppress them all?

“He… He…” Li Shuang was too shaken for words. She thought back to when she and Su Yi first met, and how he’d domineeringly demanded that Ol’ Fiend Thunder apologize.

At the time, she assumed Su Yi was fearless out of ignorance, and she hurriedly tried to smooth things over.

When Su Yi chose to travel with them, she was angry. She thought he was an idiot and that his choice was no different from suicide.

When she saw Su Yi threaten Ol’ Fiend Thunder with two “choices,” Li Shuang almost suspected he’d gone insane. Otherwise, how could he possibly have said something so foolhardy?

Now, she finally understood. It wasn’t that he was brazen and ignorant, nor was he reckless or insane. It was her and her assumptions that were wrong.

Completely, utterly wrong!

Su Yi might well be a Great Realm cultivator, but he was an inestimably terrifying existence!

It was for this reason that he dared gaze upon a false god with contempt and disregard two demigods completely. He didn’t even need to concern himself with the ghost gods in the army of evil spirits!

Just… Just how strong is Daoist Brother Su? Wu Lingchong suddenly found himself questioning his perception of reality.

He’d been accompanying Su Yi for months now, and he’d witnessed him massacre his enemies as if completely invincible time and time again.

He’d thought he’d understood Su Yi’s abilities, but now, seeing Su Yi block a ghost god and deal massive damage to a false god, Wu Lingchong felt more bewildered than ever.

As if… he’d never really understood Su Yi in the first place.

He couldn’t even imagine how unbelievably strong this Great Realm cultivator was.

“When I want to kill someone, no one can swoop in and take my prize,” said Su Yi, flicking his fingertip as dust and smoke filled the air. “Not even gods.”

Had anyone else said this, they’d have sounded utterly insane, but now, everyone sank into silence. Their hearts churned with emotion.

Was Su Yi insane?

No. When you were strong enough to dominate everyone present, all such “maddened” and “frenzied” talk seemed like a matter of course!

“Just as I thought. You’re different from every other Great Realm cultivator in history.” Off in the distance, Ol’ Fiend Thunder rose, his gaze conflicted. His hair hung loose, and he looked at Su Yi with dread, bewilderment, and disbelief.

He’d seen no small number of dazzlingly brilliant, Great Profound Stage experts, including unparalleled geniuses who could stand proudly at the pinnacle of their eras!

But now, he understood. There was another type of Great Profound expert in this world, one strong enough to defeat even demigods with ease.

He could even injure false gods!

Who’d seen such a Great Profound Stage cultivator before? Who’d… ever even heard of one?

No one! It was unheard of. Otherwise, someone as shrewd and cautious as Ol’ Fiend Thunder would never have suffered such a massive setback!!

“The boy really isn’t simple,” said the leader of the evil spirits. “I achieved divinity in life, but I never saw anyone like him. Unfortunately for him, this is the City of the Lost. Here, even gods must sink into eternal oblivion!!”

His blood-red eyes blazed with fiery ferocity.

Off in the distance, Ol’ Fiend Thunder threw back his head and laughed. “That’s the most satisfying outcome! After all, everyone must die!”

Su Yi laughed, too. “Ah, but I’ve killed even gods before. What do a few Ghost Gods amount to?”

“????” No one knew what to make of that. He’s killed gods!?

Ol’ Fiend Thunder’s eyes widened. He was just about to say something when…

Splurt!

A streak of sword qi flashed through the air, cutting him down on the spot!

Su Yi whispered, “I never concerned myself with a False God like you. You truly weren’t worthy of my attention.”

Deathly silence fell.

Daoist Brother Su has… killed gods before!! Wu Lingchong’s hands and feet quivered as he replayed Su Yi’s words over and over again. He felt as if a lifetime of accumulated knowledge about cultivation was under attack.

He knew Su Yi well enough to say that there was no way he’d lie about such a thing. That meant that… Su Yi really had killed gods before!

“You’ve killed gods…?” Li Shuang couldn’t help but blurt.

To a cultivator like her, gods were as lofty as the heavens. Compared to them, all other cultivators seemed as paltry as ants. Even False Gods and Demigods weren’t remotely comparable to the real thing.

Yet now, a Great Realm cultivator was saying he’d killed gods before. Who’d dare believe such a thing?

“You’ve killed gods?” Off in the distance, the leader of the evil spirits fixed his imposing, blood-red eyes on Su Yi. “Truly?”

He was obviously stunned too.

A moment later, he realized he’d let his bearing slip. He took a deep breath and said coldly, “In that case, dare you enter the City of the Lost?”

Only then did Su Yi turn around to look directly at the leader of the evil spirits. “Yes. I came here to explore the City of the Lost to begin with. If you answer a few of my questions honestly, I wouldn’t mind sparing you.’”

Had Su Yi said this earlier, it would have invited a burst of uproarious laughter, but now, none of the evil spirits laughed. They just found his words grating to the ears!

The leader of the evil spirits said expressionlessly, “I died a long, long time ago, and I’m now a Ghost God. I’m stuck here for all eternity, never to find release. Why would I fear destruction?”

His gaze was suddenly strange. “Besides, you couldn’t destroy me even if you wanted to. So long as we remain trapped in the City of the Lost, we Ghost Gods are indestructible!”

“Is that so?” Su Yi arched his brow.

“I can see that you know nothing about the City of the Lost. You know nothing of Ghost Gods, either.” The leader of the evil spirits gazed at him playfully. “This is a forbidden zone within the River of Epochs, a place cursed by the primordial ancient gods. Anyone who dies here will return as a vengeful spirit. Even if you kill someone, they’ll come back to life!”

“Doesn’t that make us unkillable, eternal, and indestructible?” The Ghost God grinned. “Tell me, then. How do you plan to destroy me?”

Wu Lingchong’s heart sank. Is it really impossible to kill a Ghost God? If that’s true, that’s far too unsettling!

Su Yi, however, was intrigued. “Does that mean that the three people I killed earlier will become ghosts like you?”

“No.” The leader of the evil spirits shook his head. “They died outside of the City of the Lost. They thus shall not receive this opportunity to carry on in perpetuity!”

Su Yi instantly understood.

These Ghost Gods were indestructible because of the City of the Lost standing in the distance.

But Su Yi wasn’t quite convinced of this “opportunity.”

“When people die in the city, their vengeful spirits might ‘live on’ and become indestructible, but I wouldn’t call that a good thing,” whispered Su Yi. “If I’m not mistaken, you might well manage to exist in perpetuity, but you’ll be trapped in the City of the Lost forever. Rather than calling you ‘blessed with indestructibility,’ it’d be more apt to say you’re trapped forever, unable to live and unable to die!”

“Perhaps that’s why the primordial ancient gods placed this curse; it’s a punishment even crueler than death.”

The leader of the evil spirits stared intently at Su Yi, his expression shifting. Then, he burst into laughter. “You really are a clever one, but there’s something you probably don’t know… Throughout the ages, the River of Epochs had slowly but steadily been drying up….”

He’d only just said this when a shrill, withered voice rang out.

“Yu Qian, you talk too much!”

The leader of the evil spirits stiffened, then lowered his head. “You’re right to chastise me, Grandmother.”

“Bring your forces back. Don’t interfere with those outside the city any further. If they enter, they’re sure to join us. If they don’t, they’ll get lost forever in the Chaotic Skies Watershed.”

That shrill, hoarse voice rang out once more. “Let the outsiders decide their path for themselves. I am the master of this city, and those are my rules.”

“Yes, Grandmother!” The leader of the evil spirits nodded, then took a deep look at Su Yi. “If you aren’t afraid to die, you’re welcome to enter the city. Perhaps you too will soon be eternal and indestructible, just like us.”

With that, he led his undead armies into the City of the Lost, and they quickly vanished without a trace.

Li Shuang murmured excitedly, “‘Eternal and indestructible?’ It’s just as I thought. My father really is in there!”
