Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 399: How Did You Come Back to Life
Chapter 399: Chapter 399: How Did You Come Back to Life
An air filtration system costing over two hundred thousand was certainly not cheap, but the price of sending a team into the mysterious Divine Grass Shelf Forest Area to find Yi Stones in the Evolutionary Monkey Group’s territory was even greater.
Although Tang Zhengsu was reckless, he wasn’t a fool. He must have had his reasons for doing so.
Tang Huai yawned again. "I overheard all this, so just listen and don’t repeat it to anyone. I’m dead tired. I’m going back to sleep."
By the time Xiaqing had walked Tang Huai to the North Gate, he remembered something else. "None of you guys talk much in the Lord channel anymore. Did you create a new one and intentionally leave me out?"
Xiaqing shook her head. "No."
’We didn’t create a new channel. We just moved our conversations from online to offline.’
Tang Huai grumbled resentfully, then gave Xiaqing a piece of news. "Tomorrow, the refugees in my territory are forming a group to enter Mountain No. 50. No matter what happens, you just stay put in your territory and don’t show your face."
"Understood."
Xiaqing was already content that Tang Huai had managed to restrain those people, preventing them from causing trouble on Mountain No. 50 while she was gathering soil.
After putting on his clothes, Tang Huai’s expression suddenly turned serious. "You might not believe this, but these past few days were the first time in the ten years since the Natural Disasters began that I’ve had direct contact with refugees. I lived in the Inner City before, so I only ever saw these people on screens, like watching a movie. Only now do I realize that the pitiable are truly pitiable, and the wicked are truly wicked."
"The pitiable can’t survive without help, and if no one gets rid of the wicked, they’ll just keep on doing evil..." Tang Huai let out a long sigh and turned to look at Xiaqing.
"You’ve lived in the outer city of the Safe Zone all these years. How have you survived this long?"
’How did I survive?’ Xiaqing replied calmly, "By living one day at a time."
Tang Huai nodded. "For a woman to be able to live like this all on her own strength, I’m truly impressed. It’s just... you have terrible taste in men!"
Having said his piece, Tang Huai didn’t even wait for Xiaqing’s response before turning and running off.
Xiaqing had no time to bicker with a dolt like him. She returned to her territory and called her two companions to head home.
Seeing that Sheep Leader and Sick Wolf still seemed upset about Tang Huai, Xiaqing, who was carrying the tray of insects, asked cheerfully, "Leader, do you like catching insects?"
Sheep Leader’s eyes narrowed, its expression stiff.
"How about you, Second? Do you like catching insects?"
Sick Wolf panted, tongue lolling out, HA HA HA, not looking at all displeased.
"That man from before raises insects. See this tray of them? Just by letting him get a look at you two, we were able to trade for a whole tray of Green Light insects. Once I get these to breed and multiply, Leader won’t have to catch insects every day to feed the chickens and fish, and Second will get to eat even more delicious Green Light Eggs. We definitely didn’t get the short end of the stick on this deal."
Although Tang Huai had repeatedly stressed that raising Green Light Yellow Powder Worms was difficult and very expensive, Xiaqing didn’t find it challenging in the least.
’Green Light vegetables? Not only did she have them, but she had ones infused with High Yi Element.’
’A breeding environment free of Harmful Elements? She might not have an air filtration system, but she had Yi Stones that produced the same effect.’
’Suitable temperature and humidity? Her greenhouse would be built very soon.’
In other words, once Xiaqing finished building the greenhouse, all she had to do was place the insect tray with its Yi Stone inside and periodically toss in some Green Light spinach leaves.
A small tray, forty centimeters long and wide, wouldn’t require a very large Yi Stone at all.
After returning home, Xiaqing first took out the Treasure Box where she stored her Yi Stones. She rummaged through the Yi Stone Protection Shells, selected a Yi Stone about the size of a soybean, and installed it on the insect tray.
A few minutes later, Xiaqing used her Air detector to check the concentration of Harmful Elements near the tray and found that it was already approaching zero.
A ventilated, breathable, Harmful Element-free breeding environment—check!
Feeling wonderful, Xiaqing found even the chirping of the Little Swallows to be pleasant. She lifted the tray of insects for them to see. "These are Green Light insects, and they taste great. Once these hundred or so insects reproduce, you’ll all be in for a treat."
Of course, the ones who would enjoy the biggest treat were her Green Light Chickens.
Xiaqing put the insects on her second-floor balcony, letting them grow in the sun alongside the Green Light Strawberries and Mint. Once the greenhouse was built, she would move all of them inside to an environment more suitable for their growth.
Then, Xiaqing picked up a small, newly woven basket and went to the chicken coop to collect eggs.
The coop now housed ten hens in their peak egg-laying period, nine two- or three-year-old hens, and three roosters. Every day, Xiaqing could gather six or seven eggs, enough to be worth using a basket.
To keep her diligent hens from having to wait in line to lay their eggs, Xiaqing had added another row of nesting boxes to the coop, ensuring there was one for every hen. However, she discovered that even after they were built, the hens still preferred to crowd into the original few boxes to lay their eggs.
At first, Xiaqing worried that the High Level Evolved White Hen would lay its egg in the same place as the other chickens, making it indistinguishable. But she no longer had that concern.
Because chickens with white feathers lay white shell eggs, while chickens with reddish-brown feathers lay red or pink shell eggs. Since she only had one white-feathered chicken, it was easy to tell them apart.
The hens only laid five eggs today, which was because the weather was getting colder. She needed to build the greenhouse as soon as possible and move the flock inside.
After gathering the eggs, Xiaqing tidied up the chicken manure in the coop. More chickens meant more manure. Once the manure was fully composted, it could be used to grow high-quality Green Light vegetables. Then, she could use those high-quality Green Light vegetables to feed the chickens, prompting them to lay even higher-quality eggs and hatch more high-quality chicks. It formed a perfect, self-sustaining cycle.
A crucial link in this closed loop was the two evolutionary chickens in the coop—one black and one white.
Right now, the two of them were nestled in the same dirt hollow, dozing in the sun. Both chickens wore a small necklace strung with a Yi Stone, though it was hidden from view by their thick feathers.
This High Level evolutionary chicken, which she had traded for from Territory Land No. 7, was Xiaqing’s prized possession. It was only natural to give it a Yi Stone to ensure it didn’t de-level.
The Black Feathered Rooster had gotten its own small piece only thanks to the white hen. Only if both of them were high-quality would the eggs they produced be high-quality as well.
As for the other two roosters?
Heh, too bad for them—they weren’t qualified to wear Yi Stones. Since they weren’t as strong as the Black Feathered Rooster, they couldn’t compete for mating rights. Drinking Pollution-free Spring Water was good enough for them.
After collecting the eggs, Xiaqing sent a message to Qi Fu, asking him to notify the members of the Territory Alliance that the refugees from the Second Territory would be active tomorrow, so everyone should stay within their own land.
Then, Xiaqing contacted Hu Zifeng and asked him to deliver the second-hand steel pipes from her deal with Yang Jin. She was ready to start welding them and assembling the greenhouse frame.
When she saw Guan Tong walk in carrying a long crate on his shoulder, Xiaqing asked, "What’s in there?"
Guan Tong replied, "The fittings for assembling the greenhouse frame."
’Fittings?!’
As soon as she opened it, a delighted smile spread across Xiaqing’s face.
