Farming After the End of the World
Chapter 363: I Beg You
Chapter 363: Chapter 363: I Beg You
"Captain Luo, long time no see!" Hearing Zhong Tao’s hoarse and delighted voice from a distance, Xiaqing turned toward the No.1 Territory sign and was surprised to see Luo Pei walking out from behind the Wild Grass Wall.
It had only been half a month since he’d taken the medicine made from Qiangwu Grass, yet Luo Pei was walking around as if nothing had ever been wrong!
’What did this prove? It proved the Qiangwu Grass Xiaqing grew in the Spring Cave was incredibly effective. It proved the recovery abilities of High Level Evolvers were far superior to those of ordinary people and General Evolutionaries. And it proved the quality of the Third Territory’s Special Level Nutrient Liquid and Green Light vegetables was top-notch!’
If she weren’t being watched by a hundred refugees, Xiaqing would have definitely broken into a wide, happy grin.
The refugees disembarking from the two large trucks parked by the Second Territory’s sign were all staring at the Third Territory. There was no particular reason, other than the fact that the edge of the Third Territory had several busy construction vehicles and over twenty people, making it more interesting to look at than the Second Territory, which only had its Wild Grass Wall.
Xiaqing had seen the varied gazes peeking out from the refugees’ tattered Protective Masks for many years. She gripped her submachine pistol, her face devoid of fear or pity.
Tan Junjie shouted through a megaphone, "All new personnel, please follow the instructions of your team leaders. Do not enter the territory without permission. Otherwise, you will be considered illegal trespassers and shot on sight."
After three repetitions of the announcement, the refugees had already formed long lines outside the First and Second Territories.
Xiaqing counted them one by one. There were 80 refugees queued up outside the Second Territory. ’Looks like this is just the first batch,’ she thought. ’They’ll definitely send another group tomorrow.’
Among the lines of thin, haggard refugees in tattered clothes, there were over twenty who were strong and able-bodied. Their Protective Suits were still relatively intact, setting them starkly apart from the others.
"Who’s that broad? The submachine pistol she’s holding has to be worth at least 200,000." One of the able-bodied "refugees" coveted Xiaqing’s gun. But as his gaze traveled up from the weapon and met a pair of calm, murderous eyes behind her Protective Mask, he flinched.
’This woman is dangerous. I might not be able to take her.’
Another able-bodied "refugee" in the line warned in a low voice, "Shut up. Are you fucking blind? Didn’t you fucking see the Reunion logo on that excavator? Don’t go looking for a death wish!"
’Cursing the moment he opens his mouth. His attitude is a perfect match for the Second Territory. He’ll definitely get recruited.’
Xiaqing wasn’t wearing the Green Dragon Team’s insignia, so he had mistaken her for a member of the Reunion Group’s security detail.
"All of you, shut the fuck up! Any more noise and you can all get the hell out!"
Tang Huai’s furious roar erupted from behind the Second Territory’s Wild Grass Wall. Because he was using a loudspeaker, it wasn’t just Xiaqing who heard him; even the people digging pits and burying thorn wood stakes south of the Fourth and Territory No. 5 heard it.
Zhao Ze, who was digging a trench with his excavator, stopped and glanced uneasily toward the Second Territory. Meanwhile, Qi Fu was urging the startled workers, who had backed away, to speed up their work.
On the Third Territory’s border, the excavator continued digging its trench without pause, and the cement mixer kept churning.
Soon, the cries, tantrums, and furious shouts of the refugees who had failed the test grew louder. Three of them rushed out from the Second Territory, weeping and begging the team leader to put in a good word for them, to convince the territory to let them stay.
When their pleas failed, one of the refugees had an emotional breakdown. Screaming, he charged toward Xiaqing. "RAAAGH—"
Xiaqing stood perfectly still beneath the sign, gun in hand. The convoy and the screening team were present; as long as the man didn’t set foot in the Third Territory, she wouldn’t make a move.
The Speed Evolver, Tan Junjie, immediately restrained the man, warning sternly, "Get ahold of yourself!"
"RAAA—" The restrained refugee kept screaming and struggling like a madman; he had clearly lost control. The other refugees immediately retreated, giving him a wide berth.
Tan Junjie immediately ordered, "Subject has lost emotional control. Administer a relaxing medicine immediately."
The man had an excess of the Harmful Element in his system, which caused him to lose control and display berserk, aggressive behavior. If he wasn’t given a relaxing medicine in time, he would attack indiscriminately until he died of exhaustion.
Three minutes after the injection, the man went limp from exhaustion and was carried back onto the trailer.
’The relaxing medicine was taking effect. If he couldn’t get a restorative medicine soon, his body would weaken day by day. Once he lost his ability to work, all that awaited him was death.’
Everyone was long accustomed to such incidents. After confirming the berserker was no longer a threat, the refugees resumed lining up to await entry into the territory for testing.
Another refugee rejected by the Second Territory rushed over to the security officers and continued to beg. The third person who had been rejected simply clutched his head and slowly sank to the ground.
Both the screening team and Xiaqing kept their eyes on the man squatting on the ground, as he was at a higher risk of losing control.
Based on her experience, Xiaqing judged that if this man lost control, he wouldn’t lash out at those around him like the berserker had. He was more likely to self-harm or commit suicide.
The spectacle of self-harm from an emotional breakdown was often more gruesome than a berserker’s frenzy, because the victims lost all sense of pain.
"Captain Tan, are you there?"
Xin Yu’s voice came over the Lord channel.
Tan Junjie pressed the button on his walkie-talkie. "Present."
"Please inform the refugees outside No.1 and Second Territory who didn’t pass the test to queue up outside No. 8 Territory and take the admission test again."
Tan Junjie’s walkie-talkie was on speaker. The man squatting on the ground slowly raised his head, and the one grabbing the security officer also stopped. They both looked toward Tan Junjie.
"Copy."
After Tan Junjie announced Lord No.8’s words over the loudspeaker, the two rejected men approached him. "Are you taking us to No. 8 Territory? Where is it?"
Tan Junjie answered, "Line up here for now. We’ll head out once there are ten of you."
With renewed hope for survival, the two men’s spirits lifted considerably, and they got back in line to wait.
With the crisis averted, Xiaqing exchanged a word with Hu Zifeng and followed the construction vehicle fifty meters west to continue protecting the work crew.
Lu Yuhui, who had just gotten out of a vehicle, saw Xiaqing approach and asked in a low voice, "Did someone lose control just now?"
Xiaqing nodded. "One. He’s been given Relaxing Capsules."
"It’s so hard for these people." Lu Yuhui nodded. "Miss Xia, you’re an Evolver, aren’t you? Before you came out to the territories, had you ever been to Gui San Base?"
Xiaqing shook her head.
Lu Yuhui continued, "I did some engineering work at Gui San Base. If it hadn’t been so close to the sea, it definitely wouldn’t have fallen."
It was rare to meet an outsider who had seen more of the world, so Xiaqing asked, "What kind of Evolutionary Animals breached Gui San Base this time?"
"During the torrential rains, hordes of highly venomous, evolved sea snakes got into Gui San Base through the sewer system, causing massive casualties. And then..."
Lu Yuhui paused for two seconds, speaking as if she didn’t quite believe her own words. "Three giant octopuses destroyed the Safe Zone’s perimeter wall, which led to Gui San Base being flooded."
WHOOSH— The cement slurry finished mixing and flowed down a chute into the freshly dug trench.
Xiaqing blinked, unable to believe her ears. "Giant octopuses... came ashore?"
’That can’t be real...’
"During the torrential rains, I suppose it’s possible." Lu Yuhui grabbed a seamless square pipe over four meters long, measured the distance, and planted it in the cement slurry.
