Farm System, Baby, and a Fortune: My '70s Divorce
Chapter 135 Damned Bastard
More people meant a higher chance of things going wrong. What if the doctor had some inexplicable connection with the Bai family?
The more Wu Ying thought about it, the more anxious she became. Unable to make up her mind and afraid that speaking out rashly would upset Deng Yuyuan, she first lowered her voice and asked Tuantuan, “If I want to talk to them face-to-face and make things clear right now, will your mom be angry?”
Tuantuan blinked her big, round eyes—and blinked again. She still couldn’t figure out why her mom would be angry.
However, the little cub had her own unique logic. “Sister, are you just too embarrassed to speak loudly to them? Don’t be shy! Tuantuan will help you.”
Pressing herself against the door, Tuantuan clenched her tiny fists, drew a deep breath into her belly, and shouted, “Mom! The sister says she wants to talk to them herself! Tuantuan is going to open the door now!”
The doorknob was a bit higher than Tuantuan, but that didn’t stop her. She stood on her tiptoes, unlocked the deadbolt, and gave a little jump to pull and turn the handle.
The scene inside the ward came into view. A massive pile of shopping bags was stacked on the light yellow wooden desk, and fruit baskets rested on the floor. Near the window sat an iron hospital bed covered with white sheets, with a metal IV pole standing next to it. Half-leaning against the pillows was a girl who looked exceptionally familiar to the Bai family.
Mrs. Bai wanted to step forward for a closer look, but the delicate, doll-like little girl blocked her path. “She said she wanted to talk face-to-face, but she didn’t say you could come in.”
After saying that, Tuantuan turned to look at Wu Ying, putting her hands on her hips in a fierce pose. “Right, Sister?”
Suddenly called upon, Wu Ying instinctively nodded. “Y-Yes.”
“Xiao Ying, is it really you?” Mrs. Bai stopped in her tracks, yielding to Tuantuan’s block, her gaze suddenly glued to Wu Ying’s face.
Mr. Bai and Bai Zhenglin remained silent for a moment, their eyes looking with alarm and suspicion at her leg resting beneath the quilt.
Recalling the hospital’s description of the patient in this ward, Mrs. Bai, who had previously felt detached, felt a sudden pang in her heart. How could her biological daughter suffer like this? “You child, why didn’t you tell your family when you injured your leg? Is it serious? Do you need us to help contact a doctor for you?”
Bai Zhenglin also softened his tone. “Miao Miao only fractured her foot. It didn’t really matter whether she stayed in the hospital or not. Your injuries are much more severe, so just stay here and rest well. Miao Miao, no more being stubborn. Come home with your brother to recover.”
“Miao Miao?” Hearing no response from Bai Miaomiao, Bai Zhenglin looked down in confusion.
“…Yes, okay, Brother.” Bai Miaomiao forced a smile, her eyes flashing with panic. “Then, Brother, Mom, Dad, let’s go now. Let’s not disturb Xiao Ying’s rest.”
Mrs. Bai looked at Xiao Ying with concern. “You three go first. I’ll stay and keep Xiao Ying company. How did she get hurt so badly that she needed surgery?”
Wu Ying spoke up, “I got hurt on the very day you gave me ten thousand yuan to leave the Bai Family.”
“But Xiao Ying, you shouldn’t have kept it from the family just because you were afraid we might misunderstand and think you were shamelessly trying to cling to us,” Bai Miaomiao interjected before Mrs. Bai could speak.
“Is that so?” Mrs. Bai’s lips moved a few times, but ultimately, all her prepared words of concern dissolved into a long, heavy sigh.
“Xiao Ying, those… those were words spoken in anger. It was a foolish thing done in a moment of panic. Your dad regretted it later too, knowing he spoke too harshly.” She took a step forward, wanting to reach out and touch Wu Ying’s shoulder, but was firmly blocked by Tuantuan and Deng Yuyuan. Her fingertips curled slightly. “No matter what, that… is still your home. You’re hurt so badly, why didn’t you even call?”
“The medical expenses will be around fifty thousand yuan. You only gave Xiao Ying ten thousand, right? Since you want to make amends, why not pay her medical bills?” Deng Yuyuan tilted her head, looking at the Bai family.
Mr. Bai nodded. “Of course. We will cover the rest.”
“I paid the money for Xiao Ying. Twenty thousand yuan has already been paid for medical expenses, so give that twenty thousand to me. You can give the remaining amount to Xiao Ying. Also, Xiao Ying was reluctant to seek medical treatment at first. As her neighbor, I bought her painkillers and took care of her. When she fell into a coma, I forced my way into her place and saved her life; the door repair cost one hundred. Buying medicine cost about three hundred in total, and hiring someone to bring her to the hospital cost several hundred more. I also had to pull strings and give gifts to get this private ward, which cost nearly three thousand. Can you reimburse me for these expenses? I’m not asking for much—just the twenty thousand for the medical bills and an assorted five thousand for the rest.”
The Bai family members turned their gazes to Wu Ying. Wu Ying swallowed hard and nodded. “Everything Sister Xiao Yuan said is true.”
Mr. Bai said, “Alright. I don’t have that much cash on me right now. Can I bring it to you a bit later? As a reward for taking care of Xiao Ying, our family will give you thirty thousand.”
“Thanks.” Deng Yuyuan nodded faintly.
Wu Ying recalled how she had tightly clutched that ten thousand yuan that day, pressing it firmly to her chest, only to have her leg crushed by a four-wheeled vehicle the moment she stepped outside. Meanwhile, the culprit who had harmed her was currently sitting in a wheelchair, still enjoying a life of luxury.
Holding that ten thousand yuan, she had to cover food, clothing, housing, transportation, and medical treatment—it was inevitable that she would struggle to make ends meet. Yet, with just a few short sentences, Deng Yuyuan had secured an extra ten thousand yuan.
The contrast between people was sometimes too cruel. If ten thousand yuan was an amount the Bai Family could give away so casually, why had they only given her ten thousand back then? It made her life so incredibly difficult right as she reached adulthood.
Wu Ying wanted to expose Bai Miaomiao’s true colors in front of the Bai family, but as she looked up, Bai Zhenglin was staring at her with cold, warning eyes.
Her lips trembling, Wu Ying said, “I was hit by a car right after I left the house.”
She didn’t voice her true accusation out loud. Right, after she was hit that day, the tires had been covered in blood. How could her brother not know?
“Why were you so careless? You should watch where you’re walking. There aren’t even that many cars on the road,” Mrs. Bai frowned.
Bai Zhenglin comforted his mother, “Xiao Ying must have been unsettled that day. She was probably distracted, which is why it happened.”
Deng Yuyuan raised an eyebrow. “Then did you get a clear look at the license plate, Xiao Ying? We can’t just let them hit you and get away scot-free.”
“Exactly!” Mrs. Bai chimed in. “Tell us what the car looked like. I’ll ask someone to look for it. We absolutely have to give them a harsh scolding and make them pay compensation.”
“You’re right, Ma’am.” Deng Yuyuan’s dark gaze swept over the Bai siblings. “Who knows which scumbag who deserves a thousand cuts hit Xiao Ying and then drove off? If you ask me, this kind of person ought to be struck dead by a car when they step outside, or just drop dead at home. After they die, they should be reincarnated into the animal realm and live as a cockroach for ten thousand years.”
“Enough!” Bai Zhenglin barked harshly. “As a woman, how can you speak so foully?”
Deng Yuyuan looked perplexed. “I wasn’t cursing you, so why are you getting angry? What kind of brother are you, not standing up for your injured sister, but instead defending a beast in human skin who can’t drive properly and has no morals?”
Mr. and Mrs. Bai nodded in agreement. They might have looked down on Deng Yuyuan, but her cursing was quite satisfying. No matter how much they disliked Bai Ying, she was still their biological daughter.
