F-Rank Mimic Chest: My SSS Mimic Skill Lets Me Become Anything
Chapter 154: A Door With No Outside
Warm air crossed Dane’s teeth, carrying lamp oil, bread, and cooked onion.
“A handspan from your mouth, the frame opens inward, with walls past the sill and none around the door,” Vera said from his soundward side, her boots shifting once on salt.
Beneath the food lay the dry smell of cloth shut too long in a chest.
“One bed against the left wall,” Vera said. “Washstand at the foot. Cold hearth. A rug starts inside the door. Nobody moving.”
Harl crouched at the threshold. The tip of Kril’s sheath crossed wood, then cloth. Metal tapped the washstand and returned.
“Warm all the way,” Harl said. “It lets steel pass. That proves steel.”
Ada touched Kril’s wrapped right flank. “Kril bleeds. A rightward twist opens this again.”
“Then I lead with the left.”
Vera caught the end of his shortened guide before it knocked the frame. “If the floor moves, fall toward us. Don’t try to beat it to the door.”
“A fall decides after it starts.”
“Then I’m deciding before it starts.”
Kril’s belt creaked as he tightened its dry back knot. The continuation tail cinched the same knot that had once taken Voss’s hook.
Harl pulled the tail around the lower far pin. The upper pin kept the standing handline stretched south to the full boat.
“Your belt takes the live end,” Harl said. “The pin turns the load. Vera and the chest take the free tail.”
Kril tugged once. “It holds against me.”
“That tested your weight. I want the pin ready for the whole room.”
“Then count every bit it steals.”
Harl left the answer in the rope. One turn settled around the lower pin; its free length ran across Vera’s right hip and into Dane’s mouth.
Against Dane’s wounded tongue, the line rested below his teeth.
Ada rapped the soundward support plate. “Tail on your tongue. Teeth on the frame only if it pulls him. Release when he’s out. One knock if you take that.”
Dane knocked once.
One of Istra’s contacts struck beside the wall-less sill.
“If his teeth join that joint, my plate can slow it,” she said. “The salt will take both bodies.”
Ada’s fingers stayed against Dane’s plate. “One pulse when I hit twice. Same answer?”
He struck the road once.
Kril freed one sheathed blade from his belt before placing his first boot across the sill.
“The boards are dry, ordinary wood,” he said.
The second boot landed on the rug. His shortened guide whispered across the jamb while the safety tail hung slack.
“The rug has the left sole,” Kril said. “Light grip.”
“Come back before it tightens,” Vera said.
His left heel lifted with a slow cloth tear.
“It released my heel cleanly this time.”
Kril stepped deeper.
The rug took his sole again before it landed. The cloth held. Floorboards clicked beneath it, one after another, traveling toward the cold hearth.
The line drew half a finger through Dane’s mouth.
“Both heels are cupped,” Vera said. “Boards are rising around them. Kril, fall out now.”
Kril’s body hit the threshold backward.
The tail snapped tight.
Harl’s lower pin rang and held. He pressed the turn flat with his boot. “Friction seated. Pull the free end.”
Vera drove backward through her right leg and hip. The line moved over Dane’s tongue.
Inside the room, Kril struck his sheath under one heel. Wood shrieked against metal. His other boot scraped farther from the sill.
“The floor is drawing him toward the bed,” Vera said. “Door moving inward.”
Warm wood hit Kril’s shoulder.
Dane spread his jaws, curled his tongue around the free tail, and caught the closing lower corner between his front teeth. Living grain lay wet beneath the polish as he bit the false sill before it could carry Kril past his reach.
The guest-room grain clenched around his teeth and adhered to his gums. The room pulled on Kril, Kril pulled the tail, and the tail drew a burning line across Dane’s old tongue puncture.
Human blood entered the onion-and-bread warmth.
Kril’s pulse came through the rope in quick blows. Dane’s tongue tightened around the line. His mouth wanted the living weight at its end more than it wanted the timber between his teeth.
He pulled the rope and kept every tooth in the false sill.
Vera took another step, guiding the tail above her right hip with her wrapped hand. Wetness spread through the cloth where her palm closed.
The lower pin carried the room’s return into packed mineral. Dane’s support stayed on the road while his tongue shortened the free end by one handspan.
Kril’s sheath grated under his right heel.
“Right boot free,” he said. The words broke on his breath. “Left still held.”
The inward door drove his upper body sideways. He turned the wrapped right flank away from its edge.
His left shoulder met the jamb.
“Your mouth has joined the hinge,” Istra said.
One black-gold contact entered the space beside Dane’s teeth and struck the wet seam where his grain touched the room’s.
At Ada’s second strike against Dane, gold heat crossed both mimics. Moisture fled the false jamb. Pale salt-metal opened in its hinge and forced the inward swing to stutter.
The same dryness entered Dane’s mouth.
Salt packed the old puncture at the right edge of his tongue. The wound split along its prior line. Below it, the old mouth-floor abrasion cracked and bled.
His tongue tried to release the rope.
Dane drove it harder into the tail.
The guest floor kept both its boards around Kril’s left boot. Istra’s pulse never reached them.
Kril rammed the sheath beneath his sole and turned the flat. Leather peeled from living wood a nail-width at a time.
“One more pull while it stutters,” Vera said, and put her right hip into the line.
Dane retracted his tongue with her.
The free tail came another handspan.
As Kril’s left boot tore out of the floor cup, both legs drove toward the road. His shoulder remained stuck to the door.
Vera made a sound through her teeth. Her right-hand wrap squeezed blood onto the rope as she stepped back.
Dane pulled.
Skin tightened across Kril’s upper left shoulder. The jamb-held patch raised a strip from the top of his shoulder blade toward the outer shoulder, two fingers wide, while the rest of his body crossed the sill.
The first part tore quietly.
At the shoulder’s crown, it parted with a wet rip.
Kril struck the salt road on his back. The jamb kept the strip.
“He’s clear of the threshold now!” Vera shouted.
Dane opened his teeth and spat the free tail from his bleeding tongue.
The false door slammed inward.
Its closure cut off the warm room, Kril’s skin, and the onion smell in one blow. The frame gave a short wooden groan, then folded into the road with no wall to hold it upright.
Ada was already beside Kril.
“Give me your left hand. Close it.”
His fingers closed around hers.
“Lift that arm until pain stops you.”
He lifted until pain stopped him short of his ear.
Ada pressed two fingers around the raw shoulder without touching its center. “Joint is seated. Muscle covered. Skin gone from the top of the blade to the outer cap.”
She checked the right-flank wrap. “No fresh spread here.”
Dry cloth rustled over the exposed shoulder as Ada took its ties below the arm and around the chest, leaving the raw strip free of loaded line.
“Nothing crosses this shoulder,” she said. “No guide. No sheath strap. No clever exception.”
Kril breathed once before answering. “Move the left sheath to my belt.”
“After it stops bleeding through the first cloth.”
Harl unwound the continuation tail from Kril’s back knot and drew it off the lower pin. The upper return handline never slackened.
Under Dane’s wheels, wood scraped north to south.
The sound passed beneath the coffer’s six feet, beneath Buk’s litter, and under the gathered boots behind Dane. Something heavy traveled below with it. A bed leg knocked once; a loose washstand bowl rolled after it, wood and pottery passing beneath solid salt.
The scrape stopped between the group and the bitten road.
A latch clicked behind them.
Warmth touched Dane’s rear grain.
Vera turned. Her next breath caught.
“Same door,” she said. “It opened behind us.”
Kril’s blood smell came from the dressing beside Dane.
And from the strip still hanging inside the jamb.
