F-Rank Awakening: My System Turns Trash Skills To SSS-RANK
Chapter 19: Brush with death 2
Out of a deep, pitch-black fissure in the far wall of the main chamber, something massive pulled itself into the light.
It looked like a Grave Tick, but it was three times the size of the others. Its chitin shell wasn’t reddish-brown; it was a dark, obsidian black, covered in thick, jagged bone crests that rose like armor plates along its spine. Its front left leg was mutated, ending in a massive, three-foot-long bone claw that dragged along the stone floor with a dry, screeching sound.
[Target Identified: Grave Tick Matriarch]
[Rank: D-Rank (Elite)]
[Type: Beast / Insectoid]
[Attributes: Reinforced Heavy Armor, Kinetic Cleave, Pheromone Frenzy]
[Threat Level: High (Immediate Threat)]
The Matriarch didn’t screech. It let out a low, terrifying hiss that made the dust fall from the ceiling in a fine gray curtain.
It didn’t attack the choke point. Its small, milky-white eyes locked directly onto Rain, who was kneeling in the middle of the open floor surrounded by the dead bodies of its brood.
With an explosive burst of speed that defied its massive size, the Matriarch drove its six legs into the rock, launching itself straight across the chamber floor toward Rain.
Rain’s eyes dilated.
’Flash Step—’
His mind screamed for the skill, but his core stuttered.
[Mana: 2/10]
[Insufficient Mana for Skill Activation.]
The blue warning text flashed bright red across his field of vision.
The massive bone claw was already coming down, cutting through the dark air like a falling iron blade, aimed straight for his neck.
Rain didn’t freeze. Without the skill to teleport him sideways, he drove his feet against the wet stone, throwing his entire body backward in a desperate, frantic dive.
CRASH!
The bone claw slammed into the stone floor six inches from Rain’s left boot.
The sheer shockwave hit his chest like a physical sledgehammer. The pressure blew him three feet through the air, sending him tumbling violently across the jagged gravel before he crashed shoulder-first into the stone wall.
[HP: 48/100]
[Damage Taken: 20 ]
Rain gasped for air, his lungs locked tight, a sharp, white-hot spike of pain tearing through his left shoulder where he had slammed against the granite. His still injured ribs hurt like hell.
A single glancing blow from the shockwave alone had wiped out a fifth of his remaining health pool. If that bone claw had connected directly, it would have sheared his torso completely in half.
Before the Matriarch could raise its claw for a second strike, a shadow dropped out of the air above it.
"GET AWAY FROM IT, YOU IDIOT!" Dane screamed.
Dane came down from the high ledge, bringing his arming sword down with both hands. A blinding flare of yellow mana erupted along the steel edge as he drove the blade straight into the soft joint where the Matriarch’s mutated leg met its shoulder.
CHUNG!
Dark, black blood sprayed five feet into the air as the massive bone claw was sheared clean off the creature’s body.
The Matriarch let out a deafening, high-pitched shriek, thrashing its body violently.
Maren stepped in from the left, her heavy tower shield slamming directly into the creature’s side to absorb the thrashing legs, while Nyra lunged under its belly, driving both daggers deep into its soft lower thorax.
The fight was over in less than thirty seconds. Dane drove his sword through the top of the Matriarch’s skull, pinning its massive head to the stone floor until its six legs twitched once, went limp, and collapsed into the mud.
Dane pulled his blade free with a wet sucking sound, his chest heaving, his face red with exertion and rage.
He turned on his heel, taking three furious steps toward Rain, who was slowly pushing himself up against the stone wall, clutching his bruised shoulder.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!" Dane roared, pointing his dripping sword directly at Rain’s chest. "I told you to stay ten paces back! You wandered right out into the open like a blind idiot trying to pick up measley credit core shards!"
Rain leaned his head back against the stone, his breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps as he looked up at the tall swordsman.
"I was harvesting... where Warrick told me to harvest..." Rain said, his voice quiet, flat, and raspy from the dust.
"You don’t move until the room is clear!" Dane yelled, his jaw trembling with adrenaline. "You almost got yourself killed, and you nearly pulled that thing straight through our rear flank! If I hadn’t dropped off that ledge, you’d be a bloody stain on the floor right now! Know your place, baseline!"
Rain didn’t shout back. He didn’t roll his eyes, and he didn’t offer a pathetic, groveling apology. He just held Dane’s furious glare for two long seconds, then looked down at his own hands.
His left shoulder was throbbing with a dull, sickening ache.
He pulled up his internal display.
[HP: 48/100]
Forty-eight.
A D-rank creature hadn’t even touched him with a physical edge, and he had lost twenty points of health to simple environmental splash pressure. It was a cold, brutal reminder of how thin his safety margin actually was. In a lecture hall, an E-rank or D-rank label was just a letter on a slide. Out here in the dark, a D-rank elite was an eight-hundred-pound mass of bone and muscle that could shatter his ribs simply by landing near his feet.
’Okay, lesson learnt. Respect the rank gap,’ Rain thought, his teeth pressing hard into his lip as he carefully rotated his left shoulder. ’Don’t ever assume a weak creature is harmless just because the system colors the name bar grey.’
"Enough," Warrick’s voice rasped from the darkness.
Warrick walked past Dane, stepping over the carcass of the Matriarch. He didn’t look at Rain’s bruised shoulder, and he didn’t ask if he was alright. He pulled his bone knife out, carved the large, glowing D-rank core out of the Matriarch’s forehead in three efficient cuts, and tossed the fist-sized crystal into Rain’s lap.
"Bag it," Warrick said flatly. "And keep moving. That noise is going to wake up the deeper sectors."
Rain caught the heavy, glowing crystal against his chest. It felt warm, vibrating with a dull, rhythmic pulse that made the skin of his palms prickle.
He dropped it into the heavy canvas salvage sack, pulled himself up to his feet, and adjusted the leather straps of his vest. He didn’t say another word. He just fell back into his position at the rear of the line, keeping his eyes sharp, his ears open, and his hands loose.
The group pushed deeper into the subterranean network, leaving the Grave Tick chamber behind.
The corridor sloped down sharply, turning into a wide, damp tunnel carved out of dark basalt. The air grew progressively thicker, hotter, and heavier with every hundred yards they descended. The bioluminescent fibers on the walls disappeared, replaced by strange, glowing veins of raw red crystal embedded deep within the rock face itself.
They encountered two more small pockets of resistance over the next hour, a pair of winged, bat-like scavengers that Toby picked off the ceiling before they could drop, and a solitary E-rank stone-shelled crawler that Maren crushed under her mace without stopping her stride.
Rain kept his head down, doing his job. He harvested every core, bagged every shard, and carried the growing weight of the canvas salvage sack over his right shoulder, keeping his left arm close to his side to protect his bruised joint.
[Status Check]
[HP: 55/100]
[Mana: 3/10]
A small, quiet surge of relief moved through his chest as he saw the Mana counter tick up to three.
Three points. It wasn’t a fortune, but it was something.
He had one activation of Flash Step sitting in his arsenal now. If another Matriarch dropped out of the dark, he wouldn’t have to rely on Dane jumping off a ledge to save his life. He had his own exit button back online.
The basalt tunnel widened abruptly, opening up into a massive, cavernous hall that stretched out as far as the lantern light could reach.
The floor here wasn’t gravel or loose dirt; it was flat, polished black stone, covered in ancient, geometric grooves that looked like they had been carved by intelligent hands thousands of years ago. In the center of the hall, fifty yards ahead, sat a massive stone dais surrounded by broken, fallen pillars.
Sitting on the edge of the dais, chewing gnawingly on the severed leg of some unidentified beast, was a creature that made the entire group come to an immediate, rigid halt.
It was a quadruped, roughly the size of a small bull, but its body was entirely hairless. Its skin was a pale, translucent gray, stretched so tight over its thick, visible muscle groups that it looked like wet rubber. It had no eyes, no nose, and no ears. Its head was a flat, featureless block of bone that split vertically down the center into four separate, hinged jaw sections, lined with hundreds of needle-sharp, concentric rings of teeth.
[Target Identified: Husktooth Ravager]
[Rank: D-Rank (High-Grade)]
[Type: Beast / Abomination]
[Attributes: Extreme Physical Output, Bone-Crushing Bite, Blind-Sensing (Vibration)]
[Threat Level: Severe]
The Ravager didn’t turn its head, but its four-part jaw opened wide with a wet, sickening suction sound, revealing a throat that glowed with a faint, angry red light.
"Shit," Dane whispered, his hand going white around his sword hilt. "That’s a High-Grade D. Its hide is too dense for E-rank steel."
Maren raised her tower shield, her legs shaking slightly under the sudden, suffocating surge of pressure rolling off the dais. "Warrick... we can’t take that with four D-ranks. That thing will bite clean through my shield face."
Toby nocked an arrow, but his fingers were trembling so badly the arrowhead rattled against the wooden riser of his bow.
The Husktooth Ravager pushed itself up onto its four thick, splayed legs. It let out a sound that wasn’t a roar, it was a low, subsonic frequency that vibrated directly inside the bones of Rain’s teeth, making his vision blur for a fraction of a second.
It took a single step off the dais, the stone floor cracking beneath its pale, rubbery claw.
Before Dane could take a step back, and before Maren could position her shield, a shadow moved past them.
Warrick didn’t draw a blade. He didn’t unbuckle his coat. He simply walked straight toward the four-jawed abomination, his hands hanging loose at his sides, his heavy boots making a slow, deliberate sound against the polished floor.
The Ravager sensed the movement. It lunged forward with terrifying, explosive speed, its four hinged jaws spreading wide open to swallow Warrick’s head and chest whole.
Warrick didn’t dodge. He didn’t even raise his left hand.
He simply pulled his right fist back two inches.
A blinding, sun-bright surge of yellow energy ignited around his hand, radiating a wave of heat so intense that the air around his arm visibly warped and shattered.
BOOM!!
Warrick drove his glowing fist straight into the center of the Ravager’s open, four-part jaw.
The shockwave tore across the massive hall like a localized hurricane. The sheer kinetic force blew the hair back from Rain’s forehead, knocking Toby off his feet and throwing a cloud of dust and stone splinters fifty feet into the air.
The entire front half of the creature’s skull simply exploded into a fine, red mist. The massive, bull-sized rubbery body stalled mid-air, its momentum instantly erased, before slamming onto the black stone floor like a sack of wet sand. It twitched once, its four hinged jaws lying crushed and smoking in the crater formed by Warrick’s knuckles, and went completely still.
Silence fell over the hall. Absolute, dead, suffocating silence.
Dane stood frozen, his arming sword held half-raised, his mouth open. Maren slowly lowered her tower shield, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared at the smoking crater in the middle of the floor. Nyra didn’t say a word, her breath hitched in her throat, her daggers hanging limp in her hands.
Rain stood at the back, his hands frozen in his hoodie pockets, his blue eyes wide as he stared at the back of Warrick’s canvas jacket.
That was a C-Rank Rift Raider.
No fancy sword work. No drawn-out struggle. Just raw, overwhelming, structure-shattering physical force that stopped a High-Grade D-rank beast in less than a second.
Warrick stood over the smoking corpse, pulling a dirty rag out of his pocket. He wiped the black blood and gray brain matter off his knuckles with slow, methodical strokes, his face completely unbothered, as if he had just stepped on a cockroach in his kitchen.
He turned his head slightly, his small, cold eyes sweeping over the five shocked faces standing by the entrance.
"Stop staring like a bunch of green academy tourists," Warrick rasped, tossing the dirty rag onto the dead monster’s flank. "That was just a rift guard."
He pointed a thick, calloused finger down a dark, descending staircase carved into the back of the stone dais, leading deep into the black belly of the mountain.
"The actual boss is down there," Warrick said flatly. "And it doesn’t like uninvited guests. Move."
