Chapter 636: Chapter 617: My Name is Mu Chen, I Am Your Son-in-Law
’Was that an illusion? It must have been...’
Wan Xian’Er shook her head, took a snow-white veil from her Storage Ring, and fastened it to her face, completely concealing her fairy-like countenance...
’Of course it wasn’t an illusion. You’ve changed, my Xian’Er... You’ve become even more beautiful...’
As he thought this, Mu Chen had already arrived before the gates of the Ding Palace’s main hall. It wasn’t yet time for him and Wan Xian’Er to meet. He had only managed a hurried glance just now, but that single glimpse made his heart ache. Yes, Wan Xian’Er had grown more beautiful, but the spirited sparkle in her eyes from years past was gone, replaced by maturity and weariness—all of which was his fault.
’Looks like I need to speed things up.’
However, just as Mu Chen was about to step through the gates of the main hall, four guards suddenly blocked his path. One of them said, "Who are you? I’ve never seen you before."
Another guard added, "From the looks of him, he’s most likely here for the Young Miss."
Just then, three men emerged from the main hall, walking abreast. One of them was quite burly, with a distinguished air and an exceptionally handsome face. He carried a weapon on his back that was a full two meters long and half an arm’s width, tightly wrapped in white bandages. Judging by its shape, it was likely a Heavy Sword. His expression was indifferent. After a single glance at Mu Chen, he looked away, as if unwilling to spare him another look.
The second man wore a Golden Robe. He had sharp brows and bright, star-like eyes, with a golden marking between them that resembled a spear, though the image was faint. His entire being radiated a sharp aura, and just looking at him felt like being pierced through. The man wore an arrogant expression, and his eyes filled with deep disgust and disdain when he glanced at Mu Chen.
The third was a handsome man with a gentle expression. Among the three, his features were the most striking; where one of the others was too rugged and the other too refined, his appearance was a perfect balance. At least, his gaze held no particular judgment as he looked at Mu Chen. In fact, he smiled and nodded at him before turning to the four guards. "Guards, what’s going on?"
The guard who had spoken first nodded. "Young Master Yu Wen, Young Master Zhang Lie, Young Master Tuoba, it’s like this: this man wants to enter the hall, and we were just questioning his reason for being here."
"That’s right," another guard chimed in. "He’s probably here for the Young Miss, but the window for participation has long since closed."
Before the guard’s words had even faded, the man in the Golden Robe, Zhang Lie, burst out laughing. "Don’t pull our legs, guards. Him? Here for Xian’Er? He ought to take a piss and look at his own reflection."
The burly Tuoba Rui shot Mu Chen a look, his face expressionless, before his gaze drifted to the distance once more. Young Master Yu Wen, however, sized Mu Chen up before smiling. "Brother Zhang, there’s no need to be so harsh. Perhaps this gentleman is simply looking for someone."
Zhang Lie sneered. "Looking for someone? Here in the Ding Palace? Is one of your sisters working as a Maid here? A mere Four-Ring Emperor... I really have no idea what gave you the confidence to walk all the way here."
Mu Chen looked surprised at his words and asked in return, "If I didn’t walk, how else was I supposed to get here?"
Zhang Lie was instantly annoyed. He was the esteemed Young Patriarch of the Zhang Family, a Three-Ring Venerable, yet he was being questioned by a mere Martial Emperor. Where was his dignity? He immediately sneered, "How else? You should have crawled!"
Upon hearing this, Mu Chen seemed to have an epiphany and nodded repeatedly. "I hear and obey the Venerable One’s teachings. This humble one will be sure to remember it for next time."
As he spoke, Mu Chen’s expression wasn’t fawning, but exceptionally earnest, as if he were genuinely a junior seeking guidance from a senior. Witnessing this, both Tuoba Rui and Yu Wen Tuo revealed a hint of surprise.
’An ordinary person, even when facing a Martial Artist one tier higher, would definitely feel resentment or even anger at such a humiliating remark. Yet this Four-Ring Emperor before us not only showed no displeasure but was even able to thank the other party so magnanimously.’ They asked themselves, if they were in his shoes, could they have acted as Mu Chen did? They absolutely could not.
Mu Chen’s words left Zhang Lie feeling immensely pleased. "The boy is teachable," he said. "Now, you can get lost."
Mu Chen bowed. "My lord, as much as this humble one would like to get lost, I have been entrusted with delivering something to the Ding Palace Master, so I must pass through here."
Zhang Lie, quite pleased by Mu Chen’s attitude, nodded when he heard Mu Chen was truly on an errand. "Oh, so that’s how it is. This young master finds you acceptable. Guards, let him pass."
The four guards exchanged a look, then said, "Since Young Master Zhang Lie has spoken, we will let him pass."
With that, the four guards gave Mu Chen one last cold look before stepping aside. "You may enter."
Overjoyed, Mu Chen said to Zhang Lie, "Many thanks, Lord Venerable."
Zhang Lie waved his hand dismissively and strode away with his head held high. He had come out now for the sole purpose of catching a glimpse of Wan Xian’Er as she passed. After all, unlike Yu Wen Tuo, the son of the Medicine City Lord, he hadn’t had the privilege of seeing her face since they were children.
Tuoba Rui and Yu Wen Tuo exchanged a look and started to follow Zhang Lie. However, after just a couple of steps, Yu Wen Tuo instinctively glanced back at Mu Chen. To his astonishment, at the very same moment, Mu Chen, who was heading in, also looked back. Mu Chen smiled, gave him a slight nod, and then continued on his way inside.
