Chapter 568 - 558: Lei Yun’Er, Lei Yue’er
Chapter 568: Chapter 558: Lei Yun’Er, Lei Yue’er
"It’s him!!"
In the White Camp, a few faces immediately darkened. These were none other than the few people who had clashed with Mu Chen earlier and were the only ones who hadn’t been knocked unconscious.
Over in the Black Camp, Mu Chen slowly stood up. Before leaving his table, he took a deep breath and looked at Yun Yue. "Yun Yue, thank you."
Yun Yue was taken aback. "Thank you?"
Mu Chen smiled faintly. "I was just hesitating about whether or not to show mercy. It seems I was overthinking it. Thank you for giving me a reason to be angry..."
With those parting words, Mu Chen’s figure distorted, and in the blink of an eye, he appeared before the Black Camp’s Teleportation Gate. At that moment, whether intentionally or not, the screen’s operator gave Mu Chen a big close-up, projecting the image of him standing outside the gate onto the screen.
The moment his figure appeared, the same few who had been scowling moments ago broke into savage grins. It was a perfect example of "you reap what you sow," or the more modern "if you don’t court death, you won’t die." Right now, a certain someone was demonstrating both classics in person.
No matter how strong Calamity was, even if he was at the Nine-Ring Martial Emperor Peak, it would be no trouble at all for the White Camp. Even a powerful Peak Nine-Ring Emperor couldn’t withstand a war of attrition, ganged up on by other Peak Nine-Ring Emperors. Besides, he was just a newcomer. How could a newcomer possibly be a Peak Nine-Ring Emperor?! At this thought, the few of them began to fantasize about Mu Chen being beaten so badly he wouldn’t know which way was up.
Mu Chen didn’t mind the close-up. He was currently wearing a Concealing Garment that could hide his figure, face, and even his voice. He wouldn’t have minded even if they did a close-up of his head.
Taking a step into the Teleportation Gate, Mu Chen’s figure twisted dramatically before disappearing completely. On the screen, a spatial ripple appeared, and in the next moment, Mu Chen, clad in his black Concealing Garment, landed steadily on the arena stage. The stage wasn’t as massive as it appeared from the Outer Realm, only about a thousand meters across—even smaller than Arena One from the Empire’s Grand Tournament. However, this suited Mu Chen’s preferences perfectly. Any larger, and it would have felt too empty.
"Alright!! Our Black Camp’s newcomer, Calamity, has entered the arena! Now, let’s see who is willing to be the first Attacker! If no one enters to attack within thirty seconds, Calamity will win this round by default, and the betting pool will automatically increase by one match’s worth of rewards!"
At this point, everyone knew that no one would be the first to stick their neck out. Forget twenty matches, even if it were only three, it was unlikely anyone would want to participate in the first one. Why? No one was an idiot. Unless you were a Nine-Ring Peak Martial Emperor, who would just hand over more than ten days’ worth of Cultivation Resources to the final victor for no reason?
Think about it. If you were an Eighth-Ring Martial Emperor and the defender was a Seventh-Ring Martial Emperor, stepping up to attack would mean putting up over ten days of Cultivation Resources as a wager. And even if you won, weren’t there still a bunch of Nine-Ring Emperors and Peak Nine-Ring Emperors waiting after you? In the end, not only would you fail to win, but you’d also lose your own ten-plus days’ worth of resources. Wouldn’t that be brain-dead? It was better to just let him win by default, have the arena pay the stacked Cultivation Resources, and then have everyone fight for the Attacker’s spot in the final round. That was the best choice.
Yu Lan was aware of this phenomenon, so without pausing, she continued, "It seems no one is coming up. In that case, to save time, I will only wait ten seconds for an Attacker for each subsequent match. If ten seconds pass and there’s still no Attacker, the wager will increase by fifteen days’ worth. Does anyone have a problem with that?"
Obviously, no one had a problem with it. And so, for the first defending match, Mu Chen won just by standing on the stage. Watching the number on a huge sign by the arena change from fifteen to thirty, Mu Chen didn’t show a trace of happiness. Instead, he let out a derisive laugh.
The laugh wasn’t loud, but it wasn’t quiet either. The moment he had entered, he’d discovered that the arenas here were actually a series of small Independent Spaces, which weren’t too difficult to create. Because of this simple setup, Yu Lan’s voice from the main arena could reach this battleground. From this, he deduced that his own voice could also travel outwards. What’s more, he had infused that derisive laugh with a trace of Spiritual Power. He wanted everyone to hear it. He, Mu Chen, was looking down on them, mocking them.
However, Mu Chen’s actions did have some effect, though it was merely eliciting some curses from the White Camp students. When the second match began, still no one came forward to attack.
Just as Yu Lan had stated, the number for Mu Chen’s wager changed again, this time becoming forty-five. For the third, fourth, fifth, and all the way to the tenth match, not a single person came forward, causing the number on the massive sign by the arena to jump to one hundred and fifty.
This number was terrifying. One would likely never see such a frightening amount of Cultivation Resources in all of Holy Tomb Mountain. Now, some of the more capable students were starting to get restless. But the truly powerful ones still watched the screen indifferently, showing no intention of making a move. Their goal was clear: to fight for an Attacker slot in the final three matches.
Sitting in the Black Camp’s section, Yun Yue nervously watched Mu Chen on the stage. She and her companion were slightly surprised that no one had challenged him yet. But this also gave them a strange sense of pleasant surprise. Perhaps Mu Chen could just hold out like this and make it to the final few defending matches. Even if he lost then, no one would have anything to say about it.
But just then, Mu Junwu, who was watching Mu Chen on the screen, shook her head and said, "That guy is about to get tired of the peace and quiet."
Chu Aoqing smiled faintly. "Yeah, I’m kind of looking forward to it. Sister Jun Wu, what method do you think he’ll use to provoke the White Camp students?"
Before Mu Junwu could speak, Yun Yue suddenly interjected apologetically, "Excuse me, um... you... uh,"
Because of Yu Lan’s sudden announcement earlier, Yun Yue hadn’t had a chance to learn their names. Now she wanted to join the conversation, but found she didn’t know how to address them.
Seeing Yun Yue wanting to speak but unable to find the words, Mu Junwu smiled. "Lei Yun’Er, Lei Yue’er, I can’t believe you’ve forgotten me so soon."
Hearing their names suddenly called out, Yun Yue and Yueyun both gasped in surprise. The sound wasn’t quiet, but since everyone’s attention was fixed on Mu Chen on the screen, no one noticed them.
Yun Yue asked, stunned, "You, h-h-how do you know our names?"
Yueyun was also very surprised. She scooted her chair closer to Yun Yue’s and watched Mu Junwu cautiously. With a helpless sigh, Mu Junwu simply took off her mask, revealing a peerlessly beautiful face that could topple nations. A smile graced her lips as she pursed them and said, "Now do you know who I am?"
"Sister Jun Wu!!" Yun Yue covered her mask with her hand in surprise, though she really meant to cover her mouth.
Yueyun also cried out happily, but immediately after, she felt it was impolite and hurriedly took off her own mask. Instantly, an incredibly cute and delicate face appeared before Chu Aoqing and Mu Junwu’s eyes.
This was a young girl of about sixteen. She had long, golden hair, tied into two pigtails with black ribbons, which looped in a rainbow-like arc before falling to her shoulders.
One couldn’t call the girl’s features ’beautiful’ yet, because she hadn’t fully matured. But her face, as exquisitely carved and jade-like as porcelain, would make anyone who saw her instinctively want to protect her, as if fearing some careless thing might mar skin so delicate it seemed it could be broken by a mere touch.
Her large, round, golden eyes were glistening, looking as if a single blink could create ripples. Her small, rosy lips were slightly parted, and a faint blush lingered on her little face, evidently a remnant of her earlier excitement. This was the younger sister with the soft voice, codenamed Yueyun. Her real name was Lei Yue’er.
As she took off her mask, the older sister—the hot-tempered one with the slightly more mature tone, codenamed Yun Yue—also removed her mask. To Chu Aoqing’s astonishment, the older sister’s appearance was completely identical to her younger sister’s. The delicate features, the skin so fine it might break at a touch, the porcelain-like face—even the length of her hair and the color of the ribbons tying it were exactly the same. It could be said that, if not for the spirit in their eyes, it would be impossible to tell which was the older and which was the younger based on looks alone.
Chu Aoqing took off her own mask at the same time, her mouth agape. "Heavens... they’re actually a pair of twin sisters!! The rumors were true..."
"Sister Aoqing..." the older sister, Lei Yun’Er, was suddenly taken aback and exclaimed in surprise.
Chu Aoqing smiled sweetly. "I had long heard that Uncle Lei had a pair of twin daughters also at Holy Tomb Mountain, but I was never able to meet you. It’s truly been a failing on my part as an older sister."
Lei Yun’Er waved her hands repeatedly, her adorable appearance making Chu Aoqing want to go and pinch her cheeks. But just at that moment, an incredibly familiar voice came from the screen.
"Tch~ I’ve always heard people from the White Camp say the Black Camp is full of cowards and incompetents. Heh heh... So I set up this arena stage to see if you people from the White Camp are really as brave and invincible as they say. And yet, not a single one of you dares to step up. Tsk tsk, could it be that the real cowards aren’t the Black Camp, but you, the White Camp? Or is it that you only act all high and mighty because you have strength in numbers? If so, I am truly disappointed."
These words were laced with immense Primordial Power and Spiritual Power, piercing through space, overpowering Yu Lan’s own Spiritual Power, and forcing their way into everyone’s minds. The entire grand arena fell silent, as if space itself had been frozen! But in the next instant, countless shouts and roars erupted from the White Camp!
The moment those sounds erupted, Chu Aoqing and Mu Junwu suddenly looked at each other and shared a smile. "As expected..."
