Chapter 315: The Lower Docks (Part 2)
Draven maintained a continuous, highly compressed aerodynamic cone directly in front of the beast. He was actively parting the atmosphere, completely erasing the wind resistance so Astraxion could fly at a speed that defied basic physics.
His mana core burned with a deep, punishing ache. He was force-feeding his own raw energy directly into the beast’s system to sustain the impossible pace. The strain was immense. Blood began to drip slowly from Draven’s nose, freezing instantly against his cheek in the high-altitude air.
He ignored the pain.
He remembered the corrupted bone in the clerk’s apartment. He remembered Isolde’s exhausted voice warning him that the trap was collapsing. He refused to let the architect of the shadow economy simply sail away into the dark.
"Faster," Draven commanded, pressing his hand against the dragon’s scales.
Astraxion let out a deafening shriek. The beast beat its massive wings, tearing through the sky as they dove aggressively toward the southern harbor.
The dark waters of the Capital’s naval harbor slapped rhythmically against the wooden pilings.
Renner stood at the edge of pier four. The Sea-Wraith was a sleek, heavily modified smuggling vessel. The sails were dark gray, designed to blend perfectly into the coastal fog. The heavy wooden gangplank was lowered, waiting for its final passenger.
Renner let out a slow, deeply satisfied sigh.
He looked back at the sprawling lights of the Capital behind him. He had funneled millions of Capital credits through the ruined streets of Bastion Nine. He had built a financial empire for the Cult right under the nose of the Vanguard. And now, he was walking away completely untouched.
He reached beneath his silk shirt and rested his palm against his ribs.
He felt the jagged, calcified ridges of the bone implant grafted directly to his sternum. It was a piece of the Mother. It was a direct line to Ilvareth. The connection thrummed with pale, sickly green warmth. It assured him that he was protected. He was highly valued.
Renner adjusted his collar. He picked up his small leather travel bag.
He took his first confident step onto the wooden gangplank, ready to disappear into the neutral territories where Senator Vast could never reach him.
"I would not take a second step."
The voice came from the thick fog to his left.
Renner stopped. He did not drop his bag. He did not draw a weapon. He turned his head slowly.
Kaelen stepped out of the mist, holding a loaded heavy crossbow. Three more syndicate enforcers materialized from the shadows behind him, their drawn swords gleaming dull silver in the dim dock light. They completely blocked the base of the pier.
Renner looked at the four men. He evaluated their posture, their weapons, and the lack of official Vanguard insignia on their coats.
He offered a dry, dismissive chuckle.
"Aurelio Vast is truly losing his touch," Renner said smoothly, setting his bag down on the wooden planks. "He sends unwashed street thugs to tie up his loose ends? I expected elite assassins. Or at least men who knew how to shine their boots."
Kaelen kept the crossbow leveled squarely at the auditor’s chest.
"We do not work for the Senate," Kaelen stated flatly. "Step away from the ship, Renner. Put your hands on your head. You are coming back to the city."
Renner raised an eyebrow. If they did not belong to Vast, they belonged to someone deeply informed. It did not matter. He was not going back.
"I am afraid my itinerary is quite fixed," Renner replied politely. "And I strongly advise you to lower your weapons before you make a catastrophic error in judgment."
The three syndicate enforcers stepped forward, closing the net.
"Take him," Kaelen ordered.
Renner did not back away. He reached up and calmly unbuttoned the top of his white silk shirt. He pulled the fabric wide open.
The enforcers froze in their tracks.
Grafted directly into the center of Renner’s chest was a massive, jagged piece of dark, corrupted bone. It was infinitely larger and more complex than the small artifact Nyx had seen in the clerk’s apartment. Thick, black veins radiated outward from the bone, pulsing with a toxic, blinding mixture of sickly green and pale white light.
"Do you know what this is?" Renner asked softly. The calm composure in his voice was far more terrifying than a scream.
Kaelen kept his finger on the trigger, but his eyes widened in horror.
"It is a sovereign tether," Renner explained, his eyes glowing faintly in the dark. "It connects my heart directly to Ilvareth. The Mother of the deep rot. The architect of the new age. And it is highly volatile."
Renner rested his index finger directly against the pulsing bone.
"If my heart stops beating, or if I trigger this rune manually, this artifact will detonate," Renner said. "It will release a localized Miasma shockwave that will vaporize this entire pier, the ship behind me, and every single drop of blood in your bodies."
The enforcers took a slow, synchronized step backward.
"I am not a frightened clerk," Renner declared, his voice ringing with pure, dark authority. "I accepted this mark willingly. Lower your weapons and walk away into the fog. If you try to put chains on me, we will all burn together."
Kaelen gritted his teeth. He was paid to track targets and gather information. He was not paid to die in a magical suicide blast. The syndicate line wavered, unsure how to handle a man holding a bomb inside his own chest.
The sky above the harbor suddenly shattered. 𝑓𝑟ℯℴ𝓂
THOOM.
Astraxion slammed onto the wooden pier with the force of a falling meteor. The heavy impact splintered the thick dock planks, sending a massive shockwave of displaced water surging over the edge of the harbor.
The great dragon folded its massive wings, letting out a low, terrifying hiss that vibrated right through the bones of every man standing on the dock.
The syndicate enforcers immediately dropped to one knee, lowering their heads in deep, instinctual respect.
Draven stepped off the dragon’s back.
His long black coat snapped sharply in the freezing coastal wind. Blood stained his chin, entirely frozen from the punishing high-altitude flight. He did not wipe it away. He walked directly through the kneeling syndicate men and stopped ten feet away from the gangplank.
Renner’s hand remained pressed against his exposed chest. The polite, arrogant smile finally vanished from his face.
Renner sized up the boy standing in front of him. He looked at the pitch-black eyes. He looked at the sleek dark blade strapped to the boy’s waist. He recognized the descriptions instantly. This was the anomaly who had broken General Marek’s army. This was the monster who had torn Malakor’s clone apart in the ruined factory.
Draven looked at the glowing bone implant. He looked at the terrified enforcers.
He did not draw his sword. He did not shout a command. He simply stared at the corrupt auditor, waiting for the man to realize that his threats meant absolutely nothing anymore. The chase was officially over, and the standoff had just begun.
