Extra's Path: The Eternal Frost Monarch
Chapter 380: If you think there’s even a small chance that your ability could help, then we should try it
"If you think there’s even a small chance that your ability could help, then we should try it, no matter what."
Ken spoke to Lyria, who stood before them with a worried expression.
At the moment, Damien, Ken, Arisha, Ophelia, Leonard, Kaelan, and Marina had gathered around her in a circle. Lyria had just explained her suspicions to them, including the strange feeling drawing her toward the World Tree and the possibility that her ability might be useful against the flames.
"That’s true..." Damien muttered thoughtfully. "But how are we supposed to get there? Our instructors are here. Will they even allow us to go? And what about the elders of the elven kingdom? Would they let us approach the World Tree in this situation?"
"Probably not," Ken replied. "They might refuse to let us anywhere near it."
"Dammit!" Leonard clicked his tongue in frustration.
"But we could at least try asking them, couldn’t we?" Kaelan suggested. "The situation is getting worse with every passing moment. We can’t just stand around doing nothing."
"Yes, but will they even believe us?" Arisha asked.
Her gaze shifted toward the right, where their classmates had gathered with two instructors. They were checking on everyone after a recent encounter with several Blood Elves.
"It’s their responsibility to keep us safe and return us to the academy," she continued. "Simply telling them there’s a chance Lyria might be able to stop the fire won’t convince them to let us go. Especially with Instructor Morgana still missing."
She paused before looking toward the burning World Tree.
"If only I could contact my father somehow... He might know something about what’s happening or how to stop it."
"Should we just sneak away?" Marina suggested.
Everyone turned toward her. The group stared at the blonde elf with blank expressions.
"...What?" Marina asked, blinking at their reactions.
"Do you even realize what you’re suggesting?" Leonard asked.
"I know, I know! But what else can we do? If the instructors refuse to let us go, we might have no other choice."
Everyone exchanged uncertain glances.
The last thing they wanted was to abandon their group and create even more trouble for the people already struggling to survive. Sneaking away in the middle of an invasion was an incredibly reckless decision.
Still, Marina’s suggestion wasn’t entirely without merit.
"Maybe we could try something else," Ken said after a moment. His gaze shifted toward Damien. "Lyria could go with someone else while the rest of us stay here. Since Damien is the strongest among us, he’d be the best choice to accompany her."
Damien pointed at himself, raising an eyebrow.
"Me? I mean... you’re not wrong, but why am I suddenly involved?"
"Because you’re the strongest," Ken replied matter-of-factly.
"That’s not much of an explanation."
"Would you prefer that I call you weak?"
"...Forget it."
Lyria watched their exchange before taking a deep breath.
"No. We shouldn’t sneak away or make any decisions without informing our instructors first." Her expression gradually became more determined. "I’ll speak with Instructor Brandon and Carmel. I’ll explain everything and see what they say."
Her friends exchanged glances.
Although they still had their doubts, they eventually nodded in agreement.
With that settled, the group headed toward their instructors.
---
"Instructor Brandon, Instructor Carmel. I wanted to discuss something with you."
Both instructors turned toward Lyria.
Brandon raised an eyebrow when he noticed her serious expression.
"Yes, Lyria? Is something wrong?"
"No... Actually, there’s something I wanted to tell you." She hesitated briefly before continuing. "I think I might have a way to stop the fire."
Brandon’s expression immediately changed.
"A way to stop the fire?"
"Possibly." Lyria nodded. "I’m not entirely sure whether it’ll work, but... I have a hunch."
Brandon frowned. "What kind of hunch? Can you explain it in detail?"
Before Lyria could respond, Elowen, who had been standing nearby, approached them.
As an elf and a devoted worshipper of the World Tree, she had been desperately searching for a way to save it. Even the slightest possibility of success was enough to capture her attention.
"Lyria, what do you mean?" Elowen asked, her eyes fixed on the girl.
Lyria swallowed nervously before beginning her explanation.
She told them about the strange feeling she had experienced while looking at the burning World Tree. She explained how her ability might be effective against cursed or corrupted flames, although she had never tested it under such circumstances.
She also admitted that she wasn’t certain whether her power would be sufficient to affect something as enormous as the World Tree.
Nevertheless, she wanted to try.
After listening to her entire explanation, Brandon fell silent.
He looked toward the burning World Tree in the distance before returning his gaze to Lyria.
"There is a possibility..." he admitted. "But how exactly do you intend to accomplish this?"
He shook his head.
"Even if your ability could counteract the flames, you’re still too weak to use it on something of that scale. The World Tree stretches across several kilometers. Do you understand how much power you would need?"
Lyria lowered her head.
She understood.
She knew she wasn’t strong enough to wield overwhelming power like the academy’s instructors or the powerful figures of the elven kingdom.
Her ability might fail completely. Even if it worked, she might not possess enough mana to affect the entire tree.
But... What if it worked? What if she really could save the World Tree?
Even if the chances were slim, she couldn’t bring herself to abandon the possibility without trying.
"Instructor Brandon!"
Before Brandon could say anything further, Elowen stepped forward.
"I think we should take her to the World Tree!"
Her voice carried an urgency that hadn’t been there before.
The elf woman looked at Lyria with renewed hope, as though she were seeing the girl in an entirely different light.
"Even if there’s only a small chance, we should try! Lord Caelthas is there, and he might be able to find another way to help her. At the very least, we must inform him of this possibility!"
Brandon looked at Elowen before turning toward Carmel.
The situation was already dangerous enough. Taking a student directly toward the burning World Tree could expose them to even greater risks.
Yet he couldn’t deny that Elowen had a point.
If Lyria’s ability really could help, even in some small way, then keeping that information from the people trying to save the tree would be foolish.
Brandon sighed before turning back to the girl.
"Lyria, are you absolutely certain about this?"
He studied her expression carefully.
"The situation is extremely dangerous. We don’t know what those flames are capable of, and the Blood Elves are still attacking people throughout the city. Even reaching the World Tree could prove difficult."
Lyria met his gaze.
She understood the danger better than most. She had seen the destruction caused by the Blood Elves and knew how helpless everyone had been against the unnatural flames.
But that didn’t mean she could simply stand aside.
She was a member of the Sunweave family, a family devoted to the Sun God. She had been raised with the belief that strength and responsibility meant nothing if one refused to act when others needed help.
And someday, she was expected to become a saintess.
How could she turn away when the World Tree itself was in danger?
Her father had taught her something she had never forgotten. ’Never turn your back on a situation you have the power to change.’
Even if the chances of success were small, she had to try.
"Yes, Instructor." Her voice was quiet but firm.
