Evolution of the Ruined Heir

Chapter 321: Silent

Chapter 321: Silent

Flashing red lights. Blaring alarms.

Minutes had barely passed since Malakai separated from Luna and the other Gor’Mekhai when all went to shit. The once quiet and peaceful underground base had erupted into chaos.

Malakai felt a chill emanate from the direction they’d come from but had wisely kept it to himself. Whatever had happened there, it was too late to stop anyway. The last thing he needed was Viga or Lina begging him to go back out of worry.

’I have to get to Renlo.’

Now that the whole base was in chaos, there was never a better time to infiltrate and rescue him. Malakai glanced at Viga and Lina, especially Lina. She was the weakest of the group.

“We’re picking up the pace.”

“Alright.” Viga nodded with a serious expression. Lina too, after clenching her fists.

Malakai paid no heed to her distress and blasted forward with speed. In the next moment, the gazes of the Gor’Mekhai widened as he began walking on the walls like it was his birthright.

“What is he…” Lina murmured under her breath in disbelief.

Viga’s eyes were fixed on Malakai. The boy’s speed, walking across the wall, was even more than on the ground.

“I wonder the same thing.” Viga breathed out heavily, glancing at Lina and the rest of the group. “Pick up the pace. We can’t be left behind.”

The group quickened their pace, following behind Malakai. They were all stalkborns. Speed was their lifeblood. Still, it became a struggle for Lina to keep up. But she gritted her teeth and clenched her fists just to endure.

Malakai’s focus had long since left the group. He’d narrowed down his perception, switching between multiple directions as he moved.

’That prison.’

This was his only thought. The prison he’d met Luna and Lina in was the only lead he had to finding Renlo. Malakai decided to start from there.

The underground base had exploded with movement compared to earlier. The group encountered more Sanguine warriors on their way, but with the help of Viga and the others, they dispatched them easily regardless of their evolution stage.

While Malakai moved across the wall, unseen, he used the others as bait and snuck up behind any enemies they came across.

A brutal blow to the back of the neck was all it took for most. But they left the bodies behind. With the blaring alarms it was clear the Sanguine already suspected intruders. Because of this, Malakai chose speed.

They reached the prison after some minutes, shutting the door behind them. Viga spent a few seconds listening through the door to make sure they weren’t followed.

“Are we clear?” Lina asked between deep, ragged breaths. Only she knew how far she’d pushed herself just to keep up with the group.

“We are.” Viga heaved a sigh before adding, “For now.”

He turned his gaze toward Malakai, about to ask why he had brought them here, but paused when he saw him standing at the edge of the room, staring up at the wall.

“What are you staring at?”

Lina stared with a darkened gaze. She knew what was there, and it was understandable that not all of the prisons had been given the ’privilege’ of watching their people tortured.

“See for yourself.”

Viga hesitantly nodded and approached the wall. It was then he saw that it was not a wall at all, but see through glass. He cautiously peered through it, and froze at the horror he saw.

Viga took several steps back. His expression had turned pale.

“Those evil beings.” His teeth were gritted, hands clenched tight. He looked like he might erupt at any moment.

Malakai didn’t pay him any attention and focused on the wall.

“What are you going to do?” Lina asked suddenly as Malakai lifted one of the black staff strapped to his waist. Malakai didn’t turn to face her as he responded.

“I’m entering through here.”

He activated his scythe at that moment and the Gor’Mekhai in the room took steps back in alarm.

Never had they ever seen something like that in their lives. They couldn’t help but stare at the weapon warily; they felt danger just being in the same room as it. Lina, even more so.

Malakai didn’t address their fears. Instead, he moved over and pierced the glass with the tip of his scythe.

Then, he focused. The last time he had been in this room, he had only been able to feel fifty meters away. Now, he could feel a staggering one hundred and fifty.

He focused all his perception in one direction, his front. He went through the wall and into the large hall. With the small hole, he could now hear them clearly. Just listening to it was agonizing.

With their keen senses, the sounds reached the Gor’Mekhai. Lina gasped, while Viga paled further.

“We have to rescue them!”

Viga placed his arm on Lina’s shoulder, stopping her from doing something reckless.

“We wait for him,” he said firmly. It was clear it had taken all his self control to restrain himself. Lina bit her lip but listened, and they waited for Malakai.

It took a second for Malakai to get over the screaming Gor’Mekhais. He reminded himself constantly why he had come all the way here. His mission. To find Renlo.

Then he filtered all the agonizing shouts, the screams, the cries for help, and narrowed in on one familiar one.

From the months of training with the kid, if there was anything Malakai could recognize from the boy, it was his screams. Renlo’s screams.

Malakai’s eyes snapped open, and the coldness that radiated from his gaze at that moment made the Gor’Mekhai shudder.

Without uttering a word, Malakai acted. His second weapon was brandished and activated, and he was on the wall, tearing a hole large enough for him to pass through the glass.

As the glass fell on the prison ground, Malakai slipped into the hall.

It was bright white, and the chaos of the underground room didn’t seem to reach the hall.

The agonizing screams of the Gor’Mekhai intensified, hitting Malakai like a wave. But he completely ignored it and landed with the grace of a cat. Silent.
