Chapter 292: Mainbase
Chapter 292: Mainbase
’Is there some kind of secret hideout?’ Riven wondered.
They had begun to wander through the main city now. The city could be said to be different from the other districts.
The ground was paved and the buildings and people looked more refined. It was as though they’d just left a village and entered a city.
Riven didn’t miss the odd looks they got as they walked. It was mostly from Rhett’s drunken walk and the fact that he stupidly engaged random strangers.
Riven knew for a fact that he was pretending and couldn’t help but applaud his talent. The man could truly act.
The walk continued and Riven’s unease grew. He had to stop himself from asking Rhett directly because of their tail.
Eventually, their walk brought them to the pathway leading directly toward the main Blood Guardians base located almost at the center of the city. It was just a few buildings away from the Council building.
Here, the bustle and rustle of people wandering around had ceased, and replacing them was a more quiet street filled with luxury and well spaced out buildings.
Mansions, estates, this was one of the most luxurious places in the whole of Sylvastein.
As Riven sighted the base up ahead, his eyes widened and he froze, only for his body to move without his command.
He glanced to the side and realized that it was Rhett who was controlling his blood again. Riven felt horror roaring through his body.
’I knew it. I knew it!’ The thought thundered in his head. He had known it was a mistake to trust Rhett.
Their target location, the place Riven considered the belly of the beast, was this main base. Riven had expected some sort of plan, a way to infiltrate.
So, considering everything that was happening, why the hell were they walking straight toward their target!?
Rhett didn’t seem to see Riven’s worry, either that, or he didn’t care.
They reached the large gate, where the guard stationed there was surprised to see a captain of the Blood Knights, especially at this time of night.
“Captain Rhett?”
Riven didn’t miss the way the guard let his guard down the instant they identified Rhett. The guard seemed to lose all respect and frowned.
“What are you doing here? Ah, and of course, you’re drunk.”
Rhett staggered forward. “Open the gates! I’m here to report a crime!” he slurred loudly.
The frown on the guard’s face deepened. “What sort of crime?” he asked. It was hard to trust someone who wasn’t even sober.
He glanced at Riven and ignored him when he saw that he was a mere node formation evolved.
“I’ll only speak to the Warden!” Rhett slurred again.
The guard sighed. This was a waste of time.
“Go home, Captain Rhett.” He turned away, but Rhett suddenly screamed.
“How dare you speak to a Captain of the Blood Knights that way! Do you know who I am!?”
Despite his drunken state, his unleashed aura crashed upon the guard like a mountain.
The guard, a mere synergy stage evolved, found his knees buckling. He turned pale, eyes trembling. Rhett might be a waste, but he was still a Bloom. He had almost forgotten that.
The other guards emerged from the small outpost, each one wondering what was happening.
People were allowed to enter the base to make complaints, but the guard had thought it necessary to stop someone as odd as a drunken Blood Knight captain.
“Inform the Warden. Captain Rhett wants to see him.”
Another guard took off to fulfill the order, and after a minute he returned, nodding. The first guard nodded back.
“Open the gates.”
Rhett walked through the gates, swaying. Riven walked beside him. He knew that if not for Rhett controlling his blood, he wouldn’t have been able to move one inch.
“Listen closely,” Rhett said as they walked a distance away from the guards.
“Our tail won’t be able to follow us into this base, so our movements are safe,” he explained. “By this time of night, people around here should be scarce. Before I meet the Warden, I’ll help you get as close to the target as possible. While I talk to him, complete the objective. Understand?”
Riven nodded furiously.
“Good. Now where’s the target?”
Riven subtly gestured to the eastern side of the base, where a large device lay surrounded by an iron net fence.
Rhett nodded, and just as they passed by a pillar blocking them from sight, blood streamed from a cut on his finger and engulfed Riven like a bubble. Suddenly, he vanished.
Rhett continued onwards and eventually entered the main building.
Riven was sure he’d separated from Rhett, but he still wasn’t in control of his body. He couldn’t see anything. Couldn’t even feel.
He used the quiet to calm his nerves and ready himself for what was coming. He clutched the transmitter tightly in his hand.
’All I have to do is insert this into the port. That’s all.’
It was a simple task, he repeated to himself.
Eventually, he finally felt control return to him, followed by a gentle landing. The darkness left his eyes, and the first thing he saw was the large sight of the pulse station. Riven exhaled heavily and steeled his heart.
He was about to move when he saw a figure emerging from the building at a distance from the relay station.
“Hey, you!” The man instantly sighted Riven and called out.
’Shit!’ Riven found himself unable to move. He was screwed.
“Who are you?” the man asked as he approached.
Riven had his back turned to him and was frozen in place, heart beating fast.
He could tell the man was more powerful than him, from the coldness washing down his back. What could he possibly say he was doing here?
“I said, who are you?” the man’s voice turned colder when he received no response.
“A Blood Knight?”
The man recognized Riven’s jacket, but the coldness in his tone did not decrease. His hand reached for his weapon, eyes glacier.
“I won’t ask you again.”
