Chapter 73: Chapter 72: The General and the General’s Wife

Honestly, the number 6,573 was truly an eyesore.

Wu Yue’s first reaction was, "What did Mom buy again?" However, after getting a clearer look, he realized it was compensation for Huai Yu.

He couldn’t help but smile bitterly. It was only natural to compensate her with a new home after destroying her old one.

He didn’t know exactly how the compensation was handled, but with the Defense Army’s capabilities, they wouldn’t stoop so low as to take a kickback from such petty change.

Resigned to his fate, he signed his name and confirmed the transfer of the points.

Once the Contribution Points transfer was complete, Wu Yue looked at his remaining balance of just over a thousand points and finally slumped back in his chair, exhausted.

He prided himself on fighting on the front lines as fiercely as anyone else. Everything he had was earned point by point. Yet, he just had to have a mother like this.

Playing cards, shopping... Even during the apocalypse, she never missed out on any of her luxuries.

Whenever he tried to persuade her to stop, she would pitifully shed tears, recounting their hardships as a single mother and child, and detailing all the grievances she suffered raising him.

These old stories were repeated over and over again until Wu Yue felt utterly helpless.

Outsiders only saw his glamorous exterior, completely unaware of the financial bottomless pit beneath it. After all these years, he hadn’t saved a thing. Even his house was allocated to him; if it hadn’t been, he probably wouldn’t even have a place to live.

Those who knew him well thought he still harbored feelings for Huai Yu, while those who didn’t know him assumed he was solely focused on climbing the ranks and building a good career.

But he wasn’t just focused on climbing the ranks—he simply had no foundation whatsoever. Even if he had other aspirations, he couldn’t afford to pursue them.

At this thought, Wu Yue let out a deep breath, turned around, and headed home to warn the old lady one last time—there were no more points left. She couldn’t spend any more money.

His allocated residence was in the Imperial Capital Dragon Teeth Mountain, an area filled with heavily guarded villas. When Wu Yue stepped through the gates, he saw his mother leading a familiar woman inside. Seeing him, she happily said, "Xiao Yue, you’re back? Perfect timing. When I went to Flower City a few days ago, I was a bit short on cash. Aunt Wang lent me 2,000 points. Help Mom pay her back."

Wu Yue felt his heart sink heavily in his chest.

Their neighbor, Aunt Wang, was dressed in a luxurious, pre-apocalypse haute couture suit. She stood there elegantly and upright, looking like a graceful swan. Even her smile carried a hint of arrogance.

"If General Wu is short on funds right now, it doesn’t matter. I know how you young people are; you can never hold on to your points.

"Besides, you’re on the rise right now. You need to take care of and appease your subordinates from time to time. Points are just worldly possessions. I didn’t come over with your mother to ask for them anyway. I just feel like we get along well."

Although she appeared arrogant, her tone was incredibly sincere and warm, sounding exactly like a friendly neighbor they saw day in and day out. Because of this, Wu Yue’s sigh didn’t feel quite as heavy.

"By the way, my daughter recently passed the exams to join the Guard Army. She also has a Wood Ability. Since we’re neighbors, I wonder if she could come over to learn from General Wu when you’re free?"

Wu Yue breathed a slight sigh of relief and nodded helplessly.

Meanwhile, Aunt Wang returned home to find her daughter looking at her expectantly. "Mom, how did it go? Is it settled?"

"I brought it up." Facing her own family, the arrogance around Aunt Wang completely vanished. "Your Wood Ability is very strong, but Mom won’t allow you to get any stronger. Look at how powerful General Lin is, yet in the end, even he couldn’t find a way to purify the pollution."

"I know, I know!" her daughter muttered. "The brothers under his command have forged their bonds through life-and-death battles. If I don’t get closer to him, how am I supposed to poach them?

"Now that the apocalypse in the urban areas has essentially ended, the role of Superpower Users isn’t as significant as before. If I want to make a name for myself, my only option is to form a more suitable team and head out to fight in the Wilderness.

"The people under his command are truly outstanding. Even after General Lin retired, some of them followed Wu Yue. I want them too!

"Mom, don’t worry!

"I want to be a General! Not a General’s wife."

Her mother hummed in response. There was a faint hint of satisfaction in her expression, but also an equal amount of worry. "Mom knows. I’m just afraid of what-ifs. Wu Yue is young and handsome."

Especially when he was silent, the murderous aura around him was incredibly attractive to young girls.

On top of that, his brow was perpetually laced with melancholy.

If her daughter ever developed any thoughts of "wanting to save him and make him happy," it would be a disaster!

Therefore, her mother sternly reiterated, "It’s fine to ask for guidance, but you must keep your mind on the right path. Mom will absolutely not allow a son-in-law like him."

She paused, then let out a cold sneer. "He can’t even manage his own household, yet he expects to win people’s genuine admiration like General Lin? He should be grateful that the heavens gave him such Superpowers, merits, and a smooth path for his future.

"But when it comes to his own mother, he can’t advise her, he can’t control her, and he can’t bring himself to cut ties when necessary. He completely lacks resolution and character.

"A man like that won’t go far. Bai Yu, don’t you lose your head over him."

Bai Yu laughed. Her smile was innocent, but her eyes held an exceptionally sharp edge. As she spoke, her gaze eventually lowered in sadness. "Mom, don’t worry. Just the thought of the aunt next door being my mother-in-law kills any desire I have to start a family.

"General Wu is outstanding, but I’m someone who fought alongside Lin Xuefeng three times!

"There are rumors that he went into the Wilderness by himself. It’s nice. Every warrior’s final resting place should be on the battlefield.

"Mom, if there ever comes a day when I have to take that same path, I hope you won’t stop me."

"I won’t stop you." Her mother rolled her eyes, her aristocratic elegance completely vanishing. "If you ever realize that your pollution level is nearing the critical threshold, just hurry up and give me a child.

"Bai Yu, the family has spent a lot of resources cultivating you. If the next generation doesn’t have enough capable heirs, our family will fall into decline.

"Mom is a very realistic person. I will do everything in my power to help you achieve your goals. Whether you want to defend the country or strive for the top, I won’t stand in your way.

"But please, be considerate of my feelings as a mother.

"If I have a child to raise, maybe I won’t die of grief when you’re gone."

Even though they were discussing such a serious and sorrowful topic, the atmosphere between the two remained relaxed and happy.

Their laughter even grew louder, carrying through the wind until a few snippets were caught by the sharp ears of Wu Yue next door.

"What a great family atmosphere," Wu Yue thought mildly. He felt less resistant to the idea of mentoring the young girl from next door.

Back in the house, Bai Yu, who had just made her mother laugh, secretly hid her hands behind her back. In an instant, she sprouted a large, fluffy bouquet of chamomile, complete with tender green stems, white petals, and yellow centers!

A fresh and pleasant fragrance instantly wafted through the room. Holding the flowers, she grinned and swore to her mother, "Mom, you can count on me!"
