Chapter 151: Chapter 119: Cowpeas and Dreams
"...It’s a new milk tea. The girls in my class say it tastes great. My treat!"
The boy’s words brimmed with youthful confidence, and his gesture of handing over the milk tea was exceptionally natural and easygoing. The chubby cup featured a beautiful illustration, and the straw had already been thoughtfully pierced through the lid. One could only imagine the rich, mellow flavor waiting inside.
Huai Yu wanted so badly to step forward and take a sip!
In contrast, the girl standing opposite him—whose face was equally blurry—seemed a bit flustered.
"Thank you. But we agreed it would be my treat. I’ve made you spend so much again," she spoke in a low voice. She slowly accepted the drink, only to be stunned by the price tag on the cup. "This cup is thirty-nine yuan?!"
She thought, "That’s way too expensive." In her blurry silhouette, she was wearing a pair of canvas shoes that had been washed until they were faded white. Even in a dream, Huai Yu knew those shoes definitely cost no more than twenty yuan.
"So weird. What’s the point of a thirty-nine-yuan milk tea appearing in my dream if I can’t even taste it?" Huai Yu grumbled in her sleep.
For some reason, everything happening before her eyes felt like watching a movie, yet at certain moments, she could deeply empathize with the girl’s feelings.
"Could this be my past?" she wondered. "Wow, isn’t that a bit pathetic? I look just as poor as I do now!"
The boy across from her chuckled.
"It is a little pricey. But don’t you girls all like this kind of thing? Drink up, I picked it out specifically for you.
"Besides, how could I let a girl pay?"
The girl smiled and, still a bit reserved, carefully wrapped her lips around the straw to take a sip.
As the warm milk tea entered the girl’s mouth, Huai Yu smacked her lips in her sleep. Even though she hadn’t drunk it herself, she felt as if she could describe its exact taste. The rich aroma of fresh milk paired with the delicate fragrance of tea leaves... It tasted pretty good, but beyond that, she couldn’t discern much else. Just the thought that this single cup cost thirty-nine yuan silently made her heart ache.
Seeing her quietly drinking without speaking, the boy couldn’t help but laugh again.
"Still thinking about how expensive it is? You’re so sensible with money! If my mom met you, she would definitely love you."
The girl blushed slightly.
Holding his own cup, the boy looked at her and suddenly froze. After a moment, his cheeks flushed red. He looked around, afraid to meet her gaze, but when the girl looked over in curiosity, he suddenly mustered his courage.
"Huai Yu, be my girlfriend..."
"!!!"
Huai Yu jolted awake from her dream. Sitting up in bed, her figure looked more resentful than a vengeful ghost!
"I actually had a boyfriend!!!"
How shocking! How unbelievable!
She hadn’t even gotten to taste that mouthful of milk tea, nor did she know what the person across from her looked like. His figure and height were decent enough, and his voice was alright... But was that really her past? A merely "decent" boyfriend and a life just as poor as her current one?
Yet why did thinking about it now evoke absolutely no feelings, but rather a hint of irritation?!
She ruffled her hair and pounded her quilt in the dead of night, flailing in impotent rage.
"I finally remembered my past, and it was in a dream! Who wants to listen to a confession? Couldn’t we have gone to a fried chicken shop for a bite first?! So infuriating!"
She let out a long sigh and threw herself back down on the bed. She wanted to try and recall the details, hoping to find evidence proving that the girl was indeed her, or perhaps remember what her boyfriend actually looked like. However, the moment she lay down, she fell into a deep sleep once more. ℯℯ𝘭.
The night breeze ruffled the bamboo leaves in the backyard, creating a peaceful RUSTLE. Not far away, the pinkish-white petals of the Roses danced in the air, releasing a faint, lingering fragrance.
When Huai Yu woke up the next morning, she still remembered her midnight regrets. But she couldn’t even recall the names of those snack shops. And thinking about the life she was living now... let alone milk tea, she even had to rely on her own two hands just to get a drink of clean water!
"So what exactly does a thirty-nine-yuan cup of milk tea taste like?" she wondered. "Why was I so useless in the past? Couldn’t I have struck it rich?"
Harboring these thoughts, Huai Yu got up early. While the sun had yet to fully rise, she needed to drag the thin bamboo poles she had prepared earlier to the vegetable patch to build trellises for the vines.
As for the dragon-like cowpea plant she had accidentally over-stimulated last night...
She decided, "Forget it. I’ll just let it crawl quietly on the grass. There simply aren’t any bamboo poles thick and sturdy enough to support it."
Even if there were, she wouldn’t be able to single-handedly secure them into the ground to hold up the massive cowpea vines.
Just as the trellis was set up, she saw Ke Taichiro with its colorful, iridescent black shell quickly scuttling over from a short distance away.
