Chapter 147: Chapter 118: The Past

Zhou Qian spoke calmly.

Five years had passed. There was no wound that time could not heal; and if there was, time would simply erase the memory instead.

Nowadays, he could only rely on the few remaining photos to recall Zhou Ning’s past. Even when speaking of the death he had accepted countless times in his dreams, he did so with the same casual lightness.

Huai Yu, however, was stunned.

After a long while, she muttered, "You don’t even have a Superpower, yet you managed to control a mutated plant for an entire year and keep her hidden..."

Her eyes sparkled. "Zhou Qian, I think you’re amazing!"

Zhou Qian managed a difficult smile. "Yeah. I used to think I was amazing too..."

If it hadn’t been for his arrogance and unwillingness to accept defeat, how could he have so easily let go of his obsession and tried to take the deceased Zhou Ning to the Wilderness?

But thinking about it now...

"It’s a good thing the Rose Corridor stopped me," he said. "Otherwise, with my level of skill, I probably wouldn’t have made it a few miles before being reduced to bones."

It wasn’t just the formidable poisonous spiders and mutated banyan trees he had encountered on the way; he had already come to this realization during his previous missions.

Speaking of the Rose Corridor, Huai Yu felt a sense of shared pride. "Of course! It’s so amazing!"

Zhou Qian shot her a glance and said in exasperation, "You’re even more amazing! You can actually live right next to it! Building that house for you last time was the closest I’d been to it in five years."

Huai Yu was genuinely bewildered by this.

"How was I supposed to know..."

She thought for a moment and decided to share her own secret with Zhou Qian. Well, three people knew about it by now, so it could hardly be called a secret anymore.

"I have amnesia," she began. "I didn’t remember anything when I woke up. The day I woke up just happened to be the national registry day, and I only chose this place because it was spacious.

"Who knew it would involve the Rose Corridor, Sanqing Mountain, and all these mutations..."

"Amnesia?" Zhou Qian was dumbfounded. Then he couldn’t help but laugh out loud, causing a twinge of pain in his cheek. "Fine, fine! So you haven’t been telling the truth from the very beginning.

"Tell me, that first time we met during the Rose Corridor’s mutation warning, did you do something?"

Huai Yu widened her eyes, looking perfectly innocent. "What could I have done? Didn’t you say it actually liked me quite a bit? I just tested out my Wood Ability...

"I wanted to ask you guys what was going on too. But so many of you showed up, armed with guns and looking fierce, so I didn’t dare."

It was complete nonsense! Zhou Qian didn’t buy her innocent act for a second, but he still asked, "Do you really have amnesia? Where did you wake up? Does your body feel like anything is wrong?

"Do you have any wounds?"

It was true that harsh times called for harsh measures, but in situations like this, even more people were willing to take desperate risks. If Huai Yu truly had amnesia, it meant the danger she had encountered was something she couldn’t escape from at all.

Even the amnesia itself needed to be carefully considered. After all, cases where the traumatized brain automatically repressed horrifying memories to prevent a mental breakdown were not uncommon.

He furrowed his brows and placed his hand on the call button. "I’ll have someone take you for a checkup."

"No, no, no!" Huai Yu quickly stopped him. "No wounds. I’m perfectly fine. I can eat, drink, sleep, and I have plenty of energy. There’s no need for a checkup."

She still hadn’t figured out her relationship with the Rose Corridor. If the two of them really shared some unspeakable connection, what if an X-ray revealed that her core was actually a plant? Huai Yu had brainstormed several possibilities, but since the Rose Corridor couldn’t speak, she couldn’t ask it anything and had to drop the matter.

Besides, seeing a doctor nowadays was very expensive, let alone getting medical exams. The meager amount of points she had wouldn’t cover any procedures. Most importantly, Zhou Qian would definitely offer to pay the points for her. But considering how miserable his situation was, it was best for him to save as many points as possible.

Furthermore...

Huai Yu thought about it from every angle but couldn’t feel any signs of trauma within herself. So, she asked earnestly, "Is the past really that important?

"What’s the big deal if I can’t remember? Isn’t it enough that I’m happy every day right now?

"What if my original memories are extremely painful, and I just don’t want to endure them? What then?"

Zhou Qian was stumped by the question.

"But what if you can remember who hurt you, or if you have family and friends who are too important to forget?"

He examined the small face of the frail girl in front of him again. He figured this was the downside of not having convenient internet access—this girl clearly looked underage, yet her ID registered her as eighteen.

There was one thing he could be sure of, though: being this young, she definitely didn’t have a lover or husband before she lost her memory... right?

"Then I definitely can’t try to remember!" Huai Yu declared with utmost seriousness.
