Chapter 937 937: Old Man's Last Croak
—
‘The Old Man finally croaked his last one…’
This is what Angelo first thought when he heard the news.
Honestly, he felt bad for a second. Because while he didn’t have many chances to interact with that old fool, he was still the oldest senior here. And despite their relationship becoming sour over time, he was still thankful for the old man since it was him who told him how things worked here, just like what he did for Cedric.
Angelo didn’t hate the old man. If anything, he’s just disappointed that their amicable relationship at the start turned bitter because of Tyrla, the arrogant son of a bitch who constantly looked down on him for being human.
It was Tyrla who turned the old man against him, and the old fool fell for it. He was obstinate and rigid; because of that, their once amicable relationship turned cold, and Angelo had been saddened by that ever since.
That’s why he’s so hostile with Tyrla. He wanted nothing more than to tear that son of a bitch apart with his bare hands. And if he had the chance, he probably could too; after all, he’s no longer the new and naive guy from the past. Besides, he was more talented compared to Tyrla and had already overtaken him in terms of Origin Law comprehension.
Honestly, Tyrla’s act was entirely selfish. The reason why he drove a wedge between the old man and Angelo was because he truly didn’t think much of the latter and truly wanted to cozy up with the former. He even pledged himself to be a slave so long as the old man promises to spare him when he eventually becomes the new master of everything.
He already placed himself as the right-hand man of the old guy, so, of course, he wouldn’t tolerate some random upstart to replace him.
So, seeing the old man going out of his way and being nice to Angelo made Tyrla bitter. And he knew why too.
Angelo was truly more talented than them. It only took him roughly 500,000 years to get to where he was now, and he’s catching up fast. He had the highest possibility of overtaking the old man.
Alas, it was the old man who saw this first, not Tyrla. If he had, then he wouldn’t have offended Angelo. Hell, he might even switch his allegiance had he known!
But it’s all too late now. His bitterness got the better of him, and old man Angelo had already parted ways.
On the other hand, Angelo truly never bore a deep grudge about what happened. Hell, if Cedric never appeared and he was still considered the most talented guy out here, he would’ve spared the old man once he made it out of the kindness he showed from the beginning.
Tyrla dies, though. That’s non-negotiable.
Alas…
Angelo could only sigh. Truthfully, he saw this coming.
The first time he laid his eyes on the old man, he already saw the clutches of death closing in on him. The old man was doing his best to run away from it, dragging his decrepit and halfway rotten body away from its all-encompassing embrace.
Sadly, though, he couldn’t run fast enough. His potential had long been exhausted; his youth had left him a long time ago. According to the ghost servants, the old man was already way too old when he got here.
He hit the bare minimum requirements to qualify and has been desperately trying to outrun death ever since.
In his mind, achieving the peak means restoring his youth. He was obsessed with immortality. Even the first few origin laws he comprehended were the ones that allow him to delay his own death.
And surprisingly, he held on. He held on for a very long time.
But sadly, his talents were too bad, and his qualifications weren’t enough.
One origin law per million years? Even for a long-lived creature, that’s very slow!
In the end, death caught up to him. He died in his own room, not even leaving a corpse or ashes behind. He just drew his final death, eyes widening one final time with unwillingness before dissipating into atoms that soon faded completely from existence.
It was only Angelo who truly mourned his death, and even then, he only mourned him for a short period of time. The other candidates in this race? Forget about it. It’d be impressive if they weren’t partying about his disappearance.
It’s unknown if that old man even had a family left. But even if he does, do they still even remember him? He’s more than 15 million years old…would they even know or care whether he lives or dies?
As for Tyrla? That man certainly doesn’t mourn about the old man. He’s upset, instead, because without the old man, his poor talent, and his hostile relationship with Angelo, he was left completely vulnerable.
His relationship with the other candidates isn’t good either. They surely won’t save him now.
The worst part? The newcomer had a bad impression of him, no doubt thanks to what he saw between Angelo and him. What makes this even worse is that that newbie was even more talented than Angelo.
Hell, his talents actually put Angelo to shame. Because instead of the old candidates becoming the new leader of the race now that the old man was dead, it was Cedric instead who claimed that title.
It hasn’t even been that long since he appeared, yet he already comprehended 13 Origin Laws? How absurd was that?
Of course, they had no idea that this was actually Cedric downplaying his achievements still, but even so! That’s already terrifying!
Now, Tyrla was scared about his future since it’s proving to be grim.
He gnashed his teeth in anger, regret, and unwillingness. He badly wanted to hop back in time and slap his own mouth for being so dismissive about that human!
If he had only shown some level of decency or neutrality, then things wouldn’t be this bad for him.
Now, he thinks that there’s no way out. Neither Cedric nor Angelo would spare him.
He could try to leave the Lost Void altogether and return from where he came from, but even that would be risky. He’s not strong enough to guarantee that he’d make it out alive.
Ah, how unfair, indeed. It seems that the Supreme Will truly wants him dead. But he’s extremely unwilling to surrender to his fate. Why? Since when was it so bad to want to survive?
**
Honestly, if Cedric were to know what’s going on with Tyrla’s mind, he’d probably tell him to stop overthinking and being dramatic.
Not that he could blame him, of course; if he were in his shoes, he’d probably be terrified as well. But instead of breaking down in fear, Cedric would do his damnest to secure a way out for himself instead.
Still, if Tyrla doesn’t start making plans now, then Cedric could only apologize when the time comes. There’s no way he’s letting Tyrla live. A non-human creature who managed to get this far? Letting that kind of thing out wouldn’t be any different from shooting his own foot.
If he let Tyrla survive, he would for sure search for humans and blow himself up there for his final act of revenge. There’s no way Cedric would let that happen.
In fact, Cedric was very determined to never let that thing get out of here, and he’d personally be watching out for him from now on.
It’s just unfortunate that there’s a non-aggression rule in the castle; otherwise, Cedric would’ve already killed Tyrla by now. It wouldn’t be harder than pinching his fingers together too.
Because in front of Cedric, Tyrla was nothing but an insect that’s waiting to be crushed. He wouldn’t even bat an eye for doing so.
Alas, he couldn’t do that right now. He couldn’t risk being disqualified from this place. But of course, if he’s trapped here and forced to abide by the rules even though he’s already far ahead, then Tyrla’s the same.
In fact, the pressure was on Tyrla.
Cedric already created another clone, whom he already sent to guard the outside of the lost void, because he—yes, he could do that.
If Tyrla ever discovers a way out, then it would be Cedric whom he meets first, and all of his plans would be trivialized by then.
Simply put, Tyrla is already a dead man walking. Nothing could change anymore. It’s already too late for him.
And this goes for the other candidates too except Angelo. They’re not humans, so they can’t live. Cedric wouldn’t allow them to return to their civilizations and become a threat to humanity’s prosperity.
Cedric owes this much to his people.
But of course, neither Tyrla nor the other candidates will know this. Cedric won’t tell them either. Let them feel nervous and desperate. The stronger they felt, the more prone they were to mistakes and the more vulnerable they were to him.
Time was on Cedric’s side, and with how fast he’s progressing, the deadlines of their lives approach faster too.
