Chapter 1618 1618: Protection at Any Cost
Step.
The muscular man stepped forward, his torso covered in a white chestplate made from cut pieces of iron. It wasn't armor meant to protect, but the unusual Arc that gave him complete control over his golden flame, capable of rivaling even Zargos in his current form.
The only one who had not yet summoned his Arc was Morok, but he was not going to wait. Zargos had shown that every second against him would be costly.
"So you're proud of your fire, are you?" Morok chuckled. "Alright, then it's my duty to show you that even the brightest light is nothing against darkness!"
With a tremor of space, an amulet appeared in Morok's grasp, the head of a monster resembling a cross between a dragon and a lion, frozen in a wild roar, with bared fangs and a broken horn.
Clutch.
Morok clutched the amulet tightly as it made its way to his neck, remaining there.
At the same moment, a torrent of darkness poured out, covering the ground around him. The darkness, like living matter, moved along his body, trembling under the influence of his aura.
The woman standing in the distance gulped.
'Shit, is it that serious? The boss rarely uses his Arc. Usually, the four of us are enough. Fucking Zargos and his whole clan! They're nothing but trouble!'
Zargos hummed.
"Huh, great. In that case, I'll burn you along with your darkness."
Morok, now hidden behind a layer of darkness with only his bright green eyes visible, gave him a menacing glare.
"I expect nothing else, jester."
...
Tremble! Tremble! Tremble!
Just a few minutes after Adam and Merra went down to the basement, explosions and sounds of battle could be heard from above. The tremors could even be felt here, through the stone blocks.
"These are the monsters Zargos saved me from, right?" Adam asked.
Merra nodded. She moved closer to the gate. She knew it wouldn't take them long to figure out where they were.
"Just stay behind me. Our goal isn't to win, but to buy time."
"Sure. Although I must admit, I'm tired of not being able to defend myself. It's starting to annoy me."
Adam shook his head. This was already his third time here, at the Primal Lands, and fourth overall.
Crash!
A loud crash came from the gates as Merra took up a fighting stance.
Two daggers with straight, triangular blades appeared in her hands, resembling red glass that suited her abilities.
'They're coming. Two Lords from the Sword Squad. I have to handle this, I can buy some time!'
BAM!
The next strike shattered the gates with violent gusts of wind, sending stone debris flying toward Merra.
She remained where she was, as an invisible red barrier around her stopped every pebble.
Whooooosh!
Without delay, someone emerged from the cloud of dust. Merra's eyes reflected the long blade of a katana rushing straight at her.
'I have to dodge!'
She jumped back as several water drops, as deadly as gunshots, were already in front of her.
Tap!
Merra crossed her daggers in front of her, creating a glass barrier.
The water shots crashed into the barrier, leaving cracks in the red glass, but she was able to withstand the first attack.
This already brought a smile to her face. Now, she was confident in her abilities.
Step. Step. Step.
Slowly, the young man and girl who hovered slightly above the ground entered. Her white orbs had already recovered, ready for the next strike.
"A maid?" The young man raised his eyebrow. "That's not what I expected to see."
"She's not as important as he is!" The girl exclaimed, pointing to Adam in the distance. "Look! It's him! It's Adam Vinter!"
Adam could sense their auras, but for some reason, there was no fear in his heart.
He smirked and pointed to the young man's right arm, or rather, its absence.
"What happened to your arm, huh? Did someone bite it off?"
The young man frowned.
"Ask Ramilo that. Although you won't have the chance. We're going to capture you, right now!"
'I see. So Zargos was telling the truth after all. So they clashed with Ramilo?' Adam thought as he looked at the girl. 'She's not injured, so there wasn't a full-fledged battle between them. Alexia is fine, but... what about me?'
Whooooosh!
Without hesitation, the young man and girl attacked Merra from both sides. Adam wanted to help her, but it was impossible for him. The difference in strength was too great.
With each swing of the katana, Merra had to dodge the gusts of wind and the sharp blade, and the water drops were already moving in her direction.
"You should have run, servant!" The young man exclaimed as he appeared before Merra.
Her eyes reflected the many cuts as she put up a barrier, but it was already too late.
Blood spurted from the cuts on her shoulder, and Merra tried to jump back.
"No! It's too early! I have to hold on longer!"
"You're not getting away!" the young girl exclaimed as the white orbs turned into a whip and bound Merra's ankles.
BAM!
The young girl pulled on the whip as Merra's back slammed into the ground.
"Gha!"
She gasped in pain as the young man towered over her, holding his katana tightly with both hands.
"That's it. Was it worth it?"
Slice!
Suddenly, the spectral blade pierced the young man's shoulder, then another from the other side. More shock than pain was reflected on his face as he looked at Adam.
"You..."
Merra's hands twitched as she jerked upward, plunging her daggers straight into the young man's neck.
Blood gushed from his mouth as he looked at her in disbelief.
"Grh...!"
The girl's face contorted in anger.
"You're dead now!" She roared as all the water currents headed towards Merra. She still couldn't move.
Adam, who was holding the spectral blades, flinched.
'Shit! Silvana! We have to stop her!'
In a heartbeat, a white spear appeared in his hand, full of power, but the girl acted faster. In less than a second, the white flows would tear Merra to pieces.
Crack. Crack. Crack.
At the same moment, a tremor and a loud crack thundered from above as something crashed down on the girl, easily breaking through the stone blocks in one motion.
All Adam managed to see was someone's fist pinning the girl to the ground with monstrous force.
