Endless Debt
Chapter 1610: Gun of Destiny_2
Olivia knew that was where the Night King resided, and also the core of the ritual maintaining the Dark Iron Curtain.
From the very beginning, Olivia knew she had no ability to assassinate the Night King. With the suppressive force of the bloodline, the moment the Night King noticed her, Olivia would fall to her knees and bow her head to him due to the power of the bloodline.
The so-called assassination of the king was a pathetic joke.
But this didn’t mean Olivia couldn’t do anything. There were many things Olivia was capable of, like destroying the ritual core and ending the Dark Iron Curtain. This was Olivia’s true purpose for sneaking into the Land of Eternal Night.
Suddenly, a frenzy of mad shouts came from not far away.
The roaring seemed to have magic, stirring up a chain of hurricanes and impacts. Olivia quickly hid under a low wall, thus avoiding the engulfing airflow and keeping herself concealed.
Seconds later, the howling stopped, and the stench of blood lingered around Olivia. She curiously poked her head out, looking in the direction where the blood scent was churning.
From that direction, Olivia smelled a strong bloody scent that seemed almost tangible.
Hesitating for a moment, Olivia changed direction. Her secret energy was weak in offense but effective in penetration and intelligence gathering.
Crossing abandoned streets and a series of ruined buildings, an open square came into view. At this time, the bloody scent around became even more intense, and merely breathing felt like sucking blood.
Maintaining her concealment, Olivia saw many Night Race members wandering here and groups of Bloodthirsters chained, emitting low growls during her approach.
This reminded Olivia of the days when she and Serey fought to expand territory in childhood. Serey led such elite Night Races and an army of Bloodthirsters back then.
Now, with a mass gathering of Bloodthirsters and Night Races, Olivia couldn’t help but suspect that the Regent King was preparing for a new war.
“Who?”
Suddenly, Olivia turned her gaze, cautiously examining the space behind her, but saw nothing but void.
Olivia became fully alert; in a fleeting moment before, she sensed a pair of eyes had seen through her disguise and fell upon her, yet when she reverse-traced the gaze, she found nothing.
Was it an illusion?
Olivia couldn’t help but doubt herself, but after a brief confusion, she reaffirmed her thoughts. There was something nearby, an unknown entity whose intentions were unclear.
The shadows enshrouding her solidified a bit more, and Olivia fully merged into the shadows, turning herself into a pitch-black serpent, lunging forward towards the direction of the bloody scent.
Not long after Olivia disappeared, a figure began to writhe and appear within the void.
Church watched expressionless in the direction Olivia left, pondering for several seconds before decisively opening the suitcase he had always carried. From it, he took out a rifle, old and luxurious in design, its long barrel engraved with peculiar runes, its complex mechanical structure vibrating slightly, as if this weapon possessed life force.
Even Church, so calm, found his breathing quickened a bit the moment he grasped this gun. Fortunately, he had used a replica of it before, named Chekov’s Gun, so despite the pressure, when his fingertip rested on the trigger, his mood eased somewhat.
“The Gun of Destiny.”
Church gently caressed the barrel, uttering the name of this rifle. Even at this moment, he felt a dreamlike unreality, unable to believe that the Decision Room allowed him to use this gun… to execute the crucial assassination.
“And you, your second chance.”
Church’s gaze returned inside the suitcase, besides the deadly Gun of Destiny, the Decision Room also assigned him another tool.
A nearly withered fruit engraved with a visage of agony.
This was the Fantasy Species retrieved from the Land of Secrets by Bologue and Holt, but unlike a regular complete Fantasy Species, this one was stripped from the Speaker’s body, its power greatly diminished. But for Church’s assassination, it was more than enough.
Organizing his armament, Church further expanded his secret energy, increasing the intensity of his Ether as well.
Condenser, Prayer Believer… Negative Power User.
All along, Church was an unnoticed, inconspicuous presence. Therefore, almost no one noticed that at some point, Church had also ascended to a Negative Power User.
Church liked not being noticed; for an assassin, this was the perfect disguise.
His sense of self continually stripped away, to the point that the concept of self ceased to exist in the real world. Church once again became a Narrow Space Walker, traversing the gaps of the cognitive world, closely following in Olivia’s footsteps. He knew that Olivia would lead him to the most valuable target.
Since her earlier suspicion, Olivia quickened her pace. After completely leaving that area, she relaxed significantly, while simultaneously venturing deeper into the square, catching sight of the boundless accumulated corpses.
Terrifying roars came from behind the sea of corpses, the thorn-vined silhouette faintly visible, roaring in agony.
The Night Race members struggled against the monster’s might, waving long spears, driving the blood citizens. After the long journey of transport, they were released from the cages, gathered on the other side of the Butcher’s Pit.
Periodically, the Night Race would pick some unlucky ones from the blood citizens, some directly transformed into Bloodthirsters, others thrown into the Butcher’s Pit for a blood sacrifice of brutal power.
Such a horrific scene pierced Olivia’s heart like a steel needle. She couldn’t help but retch, as if trying to vomit out her sinful bloodline.
Olivia couldn’t do it; she was born of the Night Race, burdened with heavy original sin.
The immense powerlessness and guilt seized Olivia again. She couldn’t kill the monster in the Butcher’s Pit, nor save all the blood citizens. She could only force herself to forget these, focusing her gaze once more on the Origin Tower.
As long as she destroyed the Dark Iron Curtain, when sunlight shines, all lives would be saved.
Olivia tried not to look at those cruel scenes, striding towards the Origin Tower, not turning back.
In a corner unseen by Olivia, Wei’Er diligently carved the complex Alchemy Matrix. It had been a while since carving this thing, the entire cat felt rusty, let alone the distance so far between the Land of Eternal Night and the Undying Club, which brought down Wei’Er’s work efficiency considerably.
Similarly, neither Olivia nor Wei’Er noticed among the imprisoned blood citizens, within a dark, damp, dilapidated building.
Melissa hugged her knees, curling herself into a ball in the corner of the room. Everyone had faces of terror, but Melissa looked very relaxed.
This was Melissa’s first time gathered with so many people, and everyone was harmonious, not fighting to death over resources. Their warmth pooled together, breaths overlapped, making Melissa feel such a comfortable environment for the first time. She lowered her head, looking as if about to fall asleep.
No, can’t sleep yet.
Melissa forced herself awake, looking at the old man beside her, curiously asking, “So there’s a huge rift at the center of Oubos of Oath City?”
The old man said, “That’s right, a huge rift. Every foggy morning, when the sunlight falls into the rift, it creates a beautiful scene.”
“Sunlight…”
Melissa longed, imagining.
Sunlight falling on her skin, bathing her eyes, that warm earth, warm sand.
Seeing her expectant look, the old man’s voice softened, whispering, “Do you really want to see the sun, Melissa?”
“Of course,” Melissa paused, then firmly said, “I would pay any price just to see the legendary sun.”
“Hmm… are you sure any price?”
Melissa emphasized again, “Of course!”
The old man fell silent, seeming to contemplate something very complex, after several long minutes, he asked again.
“What if, this wish requires you to give up your soul?”
