After a pause, Kyle Kinston went on, "So in the end I still want to ask you why you did this. Are you afraid my father-in-law will find Mrs. Li, afraid that Mrs. Li will go back to my father-in-law’s side?"

"Since you suspected Mrs. Li was actually Mabel’s real daughter, why didn’t you say anything?" Kyle asked.

"Because I don’t want Clover to be traumatized again!" Old Mr. Mei said. "If I spoke up, then once your lady wife knew, Edward Quinn would inevitably find out too. What would Edward Quinn do? Show up in front of Clover again? And then hurt Clover all over again?"

Kyle fell silent. He knew at least part of the tangled history between Mabel Quinn’s parents.

"Hurting her once doesn’t mean there will definitely be a second time. And how can you be so sure that if my father-in-law really sees Mrs. Li, it will definitely trigger Mrs. Li’s illness? Maybe it could even help her condition improve?" Kyle countered.

Old Mr. Mei pressed his thin lips together, fumbled around on his body for a moment, took out a pack of cigarettes, pulled one out and lit it. He took a deep drag, as if he needed the smoke right now to steady himself.

After a long while, Old Mr. Mei murmured, "If you had really seen what Clover looks like when she’s in one of her mad fits, you wouldn’t be thinking this way."

Kyle stood up and said, "I’ll go and make a final confirmation. If it’s confirmed that Mrs. Li and Mabel really are mother and daughter, I’ll tell Mabel and my father-in-law about it."

As for what he had come to learn at the Mei residence today, he now knew everything he needed to know.

Just as Kyle was about to walk out of the living room, Old Mr. Mei suddenly said, "If you really confirm that they’re mother and daughter, then when you tell them, please don’t tell Mr. Quinn right away. Wait until... your lady wife has truly seen what Clover is like when she’s raving... and then decide, can you do that?"
