Edge of the Apocalypse
Chapter 120 - 112: A Northeastern Apocalyptic Farm Owner?
Chapter 120: Chapter 112: A Northeastern Apocalyptic Farm Owner?
"I won’t be staying the night. I’ll just head back to the dorm and rest."
Watching Yu Dong stand up, Liu Ye’ye looked up in surprise, clutching her plush bear.
"But, Senior... I didn’t invite you to stay the night..."
"That’s not important. Let’s leave it at that for today. Just get ready like I told you. This time around... I want more drones. Preferably the kind that have a long flight range and potential for modification."
"Okay. I know a senior from our robotics engineering program. She works at a drone manufacturing plant, and they often take on foreign trade orders from the North. They should be able to meet our needs."
Yu Dong’s eyes lit up.
"The North... I get it. Find a way to secure this channel. Don’t worry about the money. I want lots and lots of drones!"
This time around, Yu Dong didn’t plan on holing up in the Xiangti Bay Community. He wanted a more open, a more expansive place to recruit his own people and seize control of his own destiny!
By then, they would have more people, more operations, and greater attrition... Drones served as both eyes and weapons, and could even be used to lure zombies. They were the most reliable tool for dealing with the undead.
Besides, if they could get their hands on the drones made for the North, and combine them with Zhou’s skills... the results would be on a whole other level.
Of course, this would require a lot of money. Fortunately, this time around, Yu Dong had a way to get it.
As he walked back to campus, a few ideas on how to get money started forming in Yu Dong’s mind.
’Qiao Ping’s message is crucial... She said there’s money under the nightstand at her place, a gift to her mom from the Shuangyang Group. The fact that she specifically left that information for me means it must be a significant amount... I can use it as soon as I get my hands on it.’
’Shuangyang Group... Yin Shuangyang. That guy’s pretty impressive.’
Yu Dong did a quick search on his phone and discovered he wasn’t just pretty impressive, but... extremely impressive.
’Shuangyang Group is a corporate behemoth in Yanhai City, and Yin Shuangyang is the city’s richest man—a man with connections that reach the heavens.’
Just by glancing at some publicly available information, Yu Dong could tell how much of a powerhouse the man was.
’Of course, in my eyes, the so-called ’Richest Man of Yanhai’ is just an ordinary human with a high probability of dying in seven days, no different from anyone else. He might not even be as useful as Liangzi.’
’But he’s rich!’
’Extremely rich!’
Yu Dong remembered the notebook belonging to Yin Shuangyang that he had found in the vault.
’If the contents of this notebook get out... Yin Shuangyang getting thrown in jail would be the best-case scenario. All of his patrons would be brought down too.’
This would definitely be a major case that would shock the entire nation.
’Yin Shuangyang, I wonder how much money you’d be willing to trade for the contents of this notebook?’
If he succeeded, Yu Dong could acquire a sum of money he could never hope to raise on his own, allowing him to leverage it for a massive investment of resources into transforming his future settlement.
However, it would certainly stir up a hornet’s nest. ’I need to plan this out carefully before I make a move,’ Yu Dong thought. ’I can’t be reckless.’
’First, I need to figure out how many supplies to stockpile and how much money I’ll need... This time is completely different from the last two.’
From Yu Dong’s perspective in his past lives, the daily necessities—food, water, waste disposal—and other living expenses were all easy to calculate.
He’d just count the number of people on the team and multiply that by the amount of supplies he’d allocated per person. That was basically it.
But this time, it was different.
The cruise ship must have had an extremely rich stockpile of supplies!
Otherwise, in his past life, Officer Wang would never have taken in an unlimited number of survivors, providing for all their food and water.
’But as for what’s actually on board... I’ll have to find a chance to get on and see for myself.’
’Only then can I properly plan my procurement strategy.’
Just thinking about money and supplies was enough to make Yu Dong’s head spin. He needed to find a quiet place to write all these clues down.
Before long, Yu Dong found himself back at his dorm.
He hadn’t even pushed the door open when he heard a heated discussion inside.
Xufeng: "I think if you guys want to survive the kind of zombie apocalypse Dongzi was talking about, the first priority is to find a more reliable and comprehensive shelter."
Zhao Youcai: "I get it. Didn’t he say the community was overrun by a horde? So let’s just get an underground fallout shelter, use your 500,000 to buy supplies, and hide in there. We can let the horde pass right over us and just stay put."
Huang Zhiqiang: "Why do we have to stay in Yanhai City? Can’t we just go take refuge in a village? Villages have fewer people, big yards, and plenty of land. We could fence off a plot, build some defenses, grow crops, raise chickens, ducks, pigs, fish, you name it. We could just become apocalypse farmers. It’s sustainable. Isn’t that better than being rats in a fallout shelter?"
Hearing this from outside the door, Yu Dong couldn’t help but smile.
In his last two lives, his roommates had never discussed such topics.
Yu Dong pushed the door open and went inside. The three of them were still fully dressed, gathered around the table where they usually played Legends of the Three Kingdoms. Each held a small notebook, discussing and taking notes like a team of professionals.
Seeing Yu Dong, Xufeng immediately handed him a small notebook.
"Here, Dongzi, join in. We just touched base, but we’re missing a lot of information that we need you to fill in so we can properly war-game the post-apocalypse scenario... Oh, right, we were just on the topic of site selection. Once we’re done discussing, you can give us your thoughts."
"Oh..." Yu Dong subconsciously took the notebook, then felt like something was wrong.
’Aren’t I the Reincarnator?’
’Why is Xufeng running the meeting?’
’Shouldn’t Xufeng be getting busy with some Western chick right now?’
’Why is he so seriously war-gaming the situation?’
Xufeng didn’t notice the look on Yu Dong’s face and, full of excitement, continued their earlier conversation.
"What Youcai said about the fallout shelter sounds good, but those things are meant to handle nuclear threats and bombings, not a zombie apocalypse. It might be effective against zombies, but it offers no defense against people... I believe that in the apocalypse, it’s not just the zombies that are terrifying. It’s the people who’ve unleashed their inner demons. They could become just as much of a problem as the zombies. If we’re all living in a fallout shelter and someone blocks the exits and starts pumping in poison gas or smoke, what then? There’d be nowhere to run."
Huang Zhiqiang had a look of pure satisfaction. "See! We have to go to the countryside. We can all go to my family’s place. We’ve got that rich black soil up there. We’ll be Northeast apocalypse farmers! When winter comes, we’ll just let the zombies freeze into popsicles! CHOP ’EM UP, toss ’em in the boiler... they’ll burn real good!"
People from the Northeast aren’t afraid of zombies!
The Harbin Ice and Snow Festival has entered the chat!
Xufeng, listening beside them, nodded repeatedly.
"Compared to Dongzi’s ’Seaside Community Warlord’ idea or Youcai’s ’Fallout Shelter Dweller’ plan, Huang’s ’Northeast Apocalypse Farmer’ proposal is much better. Remote rural areas are vast and sparsely populated, so the zombies would be easier to handle. There’s also huge potential for future development. If we recruited more people, we could build our own apocalyptic Peach Blossom Spring."
At this point, Xufeng turned to look at Yu Dong.
"Dongzi, what do you think? Wouldn’t this be a little better?"
Yu Dong didn’t directly answer the question, but instead placed his hand on Xufeng’s back.
"Xufeng, you should be thinking about your flight abroad tomorrow, and getting the contact info for that Western chick. Do something meaningful with the final moments of your life. You helped me more than enough in my past life. This stuff... we can handle it."
Xufeng gave Yu Dong a brilliant smile. "Dongzi, I think helping you guys survive... is the most meaningful thing I could do. And maybe... I’m the missing piece you need?"
Yu Dong stared at Xufeng’s earnest expression, taken aback.
"Xufeng, if you act like this... I’ll just cry even harder at your gravestone."
"Stop talking nonsense. Who knows, maybe I won’t die this time around. The four of us brothers, surviving the apocalypse together—wouldn’t that be awesome? Now come on, let’s talk about this Northeast apocalypse farmer plan. What do you think?"
Xufeng pulled Yu Dong down into a seat.
The other two also looked toward Yu Dong.
Huang: "Am I a genius or what?"
Zhao Youcai: "Dongzi, I also think Huang’s idea has more merit than the fallout shelter... Not only could we avoid massive hordes, but it would be a comfortable place to live. If we stockpile a ton of supplies and set up some solar panels, it would feel like we’re on vacation."
Although Zhao Youcai had been the one to suggest the fallout shelter, the more he listened, the more he thought Huang’s plan was better. He wasn’t a stubborn man.
Yu Dong pondered for a moment, his dark eyes filling with a flood of memories.
"Yeah, you’re right. Hiding in a remote village, life would be very comfortable... But, what then?"
"Do we just leave our fate in the hands of others again? Hope that someone else cleans up all the zombies and restores world peace? Why don’t we hoard some gold bars while we’re at it, and wait for the new world order to use them?"
Zhao Youcai’s eyes lit up. "Hey, that makes sense, Dongzi!"
Xufeng, however, understood Yu Dong’s subtext. He asked:
"Dongzi, are you saying... the military can’t wipe out the zombies? That seems unlikely, doesn’t it? Honestly, I don’t believe the zombies you’ve described can stand up to modern firearms."
"I’m not sure. But... I’m not going to just sit back and wait to die again."
"This time, we’re going to seize power and wipe out the zombies ourselves!"
"Let someone else have that comfortable life!"
"We... will wage war on the apocalypse!"
"We... will become the hope!"
