Chapter 114: Chapter 108: Survive in Adversity, Perish in Comfort
"What’s that noise? It’s not an earthquake, is it?"
"No... It feels like you’re in a hotel room next to train tracks, with a train passing by."
Zhou described the sensation perfectly.
Yu Dong pulled back a corner of the curtain. In the darkness, with his view heavily obstructed by buildings, he couldn’t see anything clearly. But he had the vague impression that something massive was moving out there.
The discovery made Yu Dong’s heart jump.
’Could it be some kind of top-tier King Kong zombie has evolved?’
"Wait here, I’m going to the roof to check it out..."
"I’ll go with you!"
Carrying a small tool bag, Liu Ye’ye quickly followed Yu Dong up to the 32nd floor. On the rooftop, they ran right into Wang Xiuying, who was also looking out.
"Grandma Wang, have you seen anything?"
"I saw... ’a few buildings’ moving in our direction..."
"Buildings moving? Ye Ye, give me some light."
Liu Ye’ye switched on a long-range tactical flashlight. An extremely focused beam of light shot out, illuminating what looked like some sort of behemoth in the distance.
Yu Dong raised his binoculars, aiming them toward the illuminated spot...
He saw... buildings made of zombies!
A massive horde of zombies was sweeping in from the distance. As it passed by high-rises, countless zombies were pushed upward by the relentlessly advancing tide, forming a cone shape amid the horde.
Some distinctly greenish zombies climbed out of the horde, scaling the cone and swarming all over an entire high-rise building!
An entire building, completely encased in zombies!
As the horde surged past, it looked as if the building itself was moving...
In the dark of the night, it looked like a monster from another planet!
They were still far away, but the terrifying, oppressive presence was already making Yu Dong’s adrenaline spike.
"It’s a horde! A massive horde! Turn off the lights, now!"
"Everyone, get upstairs!"
"All of you!!!"
Yu Dong’s voice crackled through the walkie-talkie to everyone downstairs.
Instantly, everyone knew what was happening!
Shen Xinyi snatched the sleeping baby from the bed and wrapped her up tightly.
"Huang, I’ll carry the baby, you help Sister Qiao! Let’s go!"
Just then, Sun Shan’s voice came over the walkie-talkie.
"What the fuck!? What’s going on? Don’t leave me behind!"
Yu Dong shouted, "Get to Building One, fast! Youcai, open the door for him!"
"Okay! Yaoyao, you go up first."
"No, I want to stay with you." Xia Yao clung to Zhao Youcai’s arm, unwilling to let go.
"Then stay with me."
Zhao Youcai and Xia Yao went downstairs to open the door.
On their way, Xia Yao said, "Gege~ Shouldn’t we tell Brother Jiang and the others?"
Zhao Youcai shook his head. "There’s no time. We can’t go inform them and then wait for them to get to the drawbridge... We need to survive first. They’re in the supermarket with a roll-down shutter, they might be okay."
"Okay, I’ll listen to you, gege."
After some "training" from Zhao Youcai, Xia Yao called him "gege" outside, and something else in bed.
When Zhao Youcai got to the first floor, he realized Zhou had followed him.
"What are you doing, Zhou? Get upstairs!"
"W-wait, I need to get something ready. You guys go ahead. I’ll be... I’ll be right up."
Zhou went into 101, the apartment designated for storing chemical supplies.
"Hurry up!"
Zhao Youcai met Sun Shan, locked the main door of Building One... and then started climbing toward the 32nd floor.
The vibrations from outside were getting closer, and a fear of death weighed down on everyone.
A short while later, everyone except Zhou had gathered on the 32nd floor, gasping for breath.
Yu Dong and Liu Ye’ye had already locked the small door to the rooftop and piled a bunch of furniture against it.
Yu Dong looked out the window with his binoculars. He saw that the terrifying horde had already rolled over Yanhai University and had grown even larger, sweeping up zombies from all the buildings in its path.
In the darkness, the horde’s silhouette was gradually becoming clearer.
"Damn it, how many zombies are there? Ten thousand? A hundred thousand? Or a fucking million?!" Zhao Youcai said, panting.
"If we stay inside the building and don’t move, we should be fine, right? As long as we don’t make any noise or show any light..."
"WAAAH~ WAAAH~ WAAAH~"
The baby in Shen Xinyi’s arms started crying at the worst possible moment.
Instantly, everyone’s eyes turned to the baby.
Qiao Ping, who had given birth that day and climbed the stairs that night, said with a pale face:
"Give me the baby..."
She took the baby from Shen Xinyi’s arms, turned her back to breastfeed, and the crying stopped.
Yu Dong scanned the group.
"Where’s Zhou!?"
"He said he was getting something ready and would be right up..."
"Everyone, to 3102. We’ll take shelter in that apartment."
It was a middle unit on the 31st floor, a small 45-square-meter one-bedroom apartment.
"Okay!"
Without asking why, the group quickly followed Yu Dong into the already-opened apartment 3102 and filed inside.
After a moment’s wait, Zhou arrived, huffing and puffing, carrying a bag.
"Quick, get in!"
Everyone entered 3102.
The air inside was freezing cold. There were no signs of anyone having lived there; dust covered the floor, the bed, and the sofa.
But this was the best shelter Yu Dong could think of after a quick assessment.
It wasn’t directly adjacent to the roof, and it was sandwiched between two other apartments. Because it was a small unit, it only had two exterior windows: one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom.
A few of them lifted the bed and propped it against the bedroom window.
They moved the sofa and a cabinet to the kitchen to block the other window.
Everything was ready.
Present were Yu Dong, Zhao Youcai, Huang Zhiqiang, Zhou Jian Country, Liu Ye’ye, Shen Xinyi, Qiao Ping and her baby, Wang Xiuying, Sun Shan, and Xia Yao.
All eleven of them huddled together, shivering.
Even with the windows shut, the sound of the approaching horde still pierced through and filled the room.
