Dungeon Master (Karma System)
Chapter 243: The Road Below
The stone wall closed behind the Five Knots before Min reached the bottom of the first stair.
The last light from the cavern vanished with it. Their lamps illuminated a narrow passage descending beside the black stream, but the water reflected none of them. Its surface carried the light away in broken lines and became dark again a few paces ahead.
Tessa stopped the party before the stair curved.
"Check everything." Tessa said.
Belda tested the rope at her shoulder and the climbing spikes attached to her pack. Orin examined the stone beneath their feet. Min opened one lamp, adjusted its wick, and compared its fuel with the protected reserves. Kesh checked the party record.
All five passage marks remained active.
[Gravewater Descent]
[Living entrants recognized: Five.]
[Current objective: Reach the River.]
[Death and revival follow ordinary dungeon rules.]
The final line did not promise special protection. They had entered with their physical bodies, equipment, and injuries. If one of them died with enough dungeon coins, the graveyard would restore that person. Without enough coins, the body would appear in Sanctuary’s hospital.
Either result would remove the dead member from the expedition.
"We stay together." Tessa said.
They descended.
The worked stair ended at an arch divided by five bands of dark metal. Each band held one empty depression matching a portion of the party’s passage symbol. The lowest depression sat close to the floor. The highest waited above Orin’s reach.
Their marks brightened when they approached.
Kesh tested the threshold without placing his mark. A pale barrier formed between the metal bands and stopped his hand. The passage beyond remained visible, but the system gave him no option to cross.
The gate did not need the marks in the order used to open the cavern wall. It required all five owners to present them at once.
Belda climbed the side of the arch and braced herself above the others. Orin took the lowest position. Tessa, Kesh, and Min filled the remaining spaces. When all five marks touched their matching depressions, the bands withdrew into the stone.
[Identity threshold passed.]
[Passage marks secured for the duration of the descent.]
The marks shifted from their hands to the party record. Copying the pattern would not have opened the gate, and another adventurer following the Five Knots through the outer wall would have stopped here.
Beyond the arch, the stream cut across the path.
The original builders had placed flat stones through the water, but several had broken or tilted beneath the current. The black surface concealed the bottom between them. Orin lowered a weighted line from the bank. The weight struck stone near the edge, slid, and continued down until only a short length of rope remained in his hands.
They would not wade across.
Belda fixed a line to a metal ring set into the wall. The ring showed no rust, but she tested the surrounding stone before trusting it. Tessa crossed first, moving along the wall above the broken path. She reached a second ring on the far side and secured the line from both directions.
The others followed with their packs clipped separately. Min carried the spare lamps against his chest. Kesh crossed with the map case sealed beneath his coat. Orin came last after releasing the first anchor in a way that allowed Belda to recover most of the rope.
The stream widened on the far side and forced the path against a sloping wall. Shallow grooves offered handholds where dry fingers could grip them. Water covered the lower half of the ledge and pulled at their boots.
The Five Knots moved as they did along an airship’s outer hull. Tessa set the pace. Belda controlled the line. Orin checked every anchor. Kesh watched the route ahead while Min protected the equipment they could not replace.
Halfway across, the current rose without warning.
Black water covered the ledge and struck their legs. Tessa reached the next handhold before the force arrived. Belda tightened the safety line. Orin shifted his weight toward the wall and kept Min from being pulled away with the lamps.
They held until the surge passed.
The stream returned to its earlier depth as quickly as it had risen. Nothing upstream explained the change.
Kesh marked the timing and the high-water line.
"The next surge may not wait as long." Kesh said.
They crossed the remaining distance before testing the pattern.
The passage divided beyond the ledge. Mist filled the route nearest the stream. A dry tunnel climbed behind a row of stone figures whose blank faces had been turned toward the wall.
Movement appeared inside the mist.
Three people approached from the opposite direction. Their clothing and equipment were complete but slightly colorless. The first carried an unlit lantern. The second had a bandaged arm without any sign of blood. None disturbed the mist as they passed through it.
Afterlife forms.
The dead travelers noticed the Five Knots and stopped on the other side.
"The living road is behind the watchers." The first traveler said.
Tessa looked toward the stone figures.
"Does it return to the stream?"
"Every road below returns to it. Keep your light covered until the watchers face you."
The traveler continued upward before Tessa could ask anything else. The other two followed. Their forms passed through the sealed identity gate without presenting marks and disappeared along a route the living could not use.
Min shuttered four lamps and left one burning.
The party entered the dry tunnel.
The first stone figure turned as Tessa passed it. Its blank head followed the light but its body remained fixed to the wall. The second moved farther. Stone feet separated from the floor, and one arm unfolded from its chest.
The Five Knots understood the warning before the remaining figures turned.
They covered the final lamp.
Darkness stopped the movement.
Min opened the smallest gap in the shutter. A thin line of light reached the floor without touching the figures’ faces. Kesh used it to identify a series of pale stones set into the path. The party moved from one to the next, opening the lamp only when the surrounding figures faced them.
The figures did not react to their bodies. They reacted when light crossed their faces and then left them behind.
At the fourth turn, the tunnel opened into a chamber where the pale path divided around a collapsed section. The direct route had disappeared beneath stone. The remaining path crossed between two rows of watchers positioned too closely for the lamp to avoid both.
Tessa studied the ceiling and the fragments covering the direct route.
"We clear enough space to pass." Tessa said.
They worked in darkness except for narrow intervals when Min exposed the lamp toward the rubble. Orin identified which stones could be moved without bringing down the ceiling. Belda and Tessa secured the larger pieces before shifting them. Kesh watched the stone figures and called for darkness whenever one began turning too far.
The work opened a gap large enough to crawl through.
One of the final stones slipped before Belda could take its weight. It struck Orin’s shoulder and pinned him against the floor. The nearest watcher turned toward the sound even though the lamp remained covered.
The creature left the wall.
Its first steps were slow. Each one accelerated as it located them without light. More stone scraped behind it.
The party abandoned the remaining rubble. Belda and Tessa freed Orin while Min carried the lamps through the opening. Kesh held the safety line from the far side. The first watcher reached the collapsed route as Orin pulled his legs through.
It could not fit.
Stone hands struck the opening and widened it one fragment at a time.
The Five Knots moved before the figures created enough room to follow.
Orin’s shoulder worked, but not well. He tightened a support strap around it and kept walking. The injury remained. Nothing in the descent repaired a living body.
The dry tunnel curved downward and met the stream again beyond another metal arch. This gate did not ask them to present the five marks. It counted them as the party crossed.
[Passage marks intact: Five.]
[Living entrants remaining: Five.]
The notice confirmed that the watchers had been part of the route rather than a battle with a protected reset. Losing someone would have changed both numbers permanently for the expedition.
The stream entered a series of low caverns where the ceiling forced the party to crouch. Their remaining light drew pale shapes from cracks above the water. The creatures did not attack the afterlife forms moving through a mist passage on the opposite bank. They followed the warmth and movement of physical bodies.
The Five Knots could not avoid every encounter while carrying lamps through the narrow route. They changed their method instead.
Min protected one light at the center. Tessa and Belda kept the line moving. Kesh identified turns where the current and air both flowed in the same direction. Orin used his good arm to collapse a brittle shelf after the party passed, blocking most of the creatures without burying the path behind them.
They fought only when the route narrowed too far to keep moving. The first clash cost them a lamp and forced Belda to use part of the rope as a barrier across a gap. The second ended when Tessa directed the group onto a higher ledge the creatures could not climb without leaving the water.
By the time the ceiling rose again, three lamps remained and Orin’s support strap was dark with water.
The black stream had become too wide for their light to reach the opposite bank.
The final passage ended at a stone landing.
Beyond it, a river crossed a cavern so vast that its ceiling and far wall remained invisible. Distant lights drifted along the surface. Some belonged to boats. Others moved beneath the water and vanished whenever Min aimed a lamp toward them.
A system label appeared above the current.
[River Styx]
[Living crossing requires payment.]
The Five Knots gathered at the landing. Their quest updated without declaring the descent complete.
[The Road Beneath Still Water]
[Reach the ferryman: Incomplete.]
Kesh looked along the river. No bell, rope, or posted instruction waited near the landing.
The unlit lantern carried by the dead traveler made sense when a single light appeared across the water.
It moved toward them.
A narrow boat emerged from the darkness without sail or visible current. Several colorless passengers sat along its center benches. The figure at the stern guided it with one long pole.
The ferryman brought the boat against the landing and looked across the five living travelers, their equipment, and the marks recorded beside their names.
He did not lower the boarding chain.
[The Road Beneath Still Water]
[Reach the ferryman: Complete.]
[Five completed afterlife sub-objectives recognized.]
[Stage reward: One funerary coin assigned to each contributing member.]
[Funerary coins qualify as payment earned through a quest concerning the dead.]
"What do five living travelers intend to pay?" The ferryman asked.
