Chapter 241: Signs of the Underworld

The Sixth Knot crossed the broken hills with enough height to avoid the worst of the sinking air.

Tessa kept both hands on the controls while Kesh compared the terrain below with their maps. The ruined complex appeared near midday, its pale walls divided by a dark line where the stream entered the northern foundation.

The downward pull began before they reached it.

Min adjusted the engines as the airship lost lift. Belda reduced the forward sails, and Orin moved along the hull to watch the anchor fittings. Tessa followed the approach she had plotted in Sanctuary, turning over the higher western ridge before descending toward a shelf of bare stone.

The air steadied once the ruins fell behind them.

The Sixth Knot settled onto the shelf without striking its lower hull. Belda secured the first anchor while Orin fixed two more into cracks he had inspected from above. Min removed the two engine components selected before departure and locked them in a reinforced compartment.

Kesh marked the landing site on the copy of his map.

"The current is stronger than our old record." Tessa said.

"The stream may be carrying more water below the ruins." Kesh said.

They left the airship with their climbing equipment divided among all five members. The rough ground between the shelf and the ruins forced them to walk, but it also kept wagons and casual travelers away from The Sixth Knot.

Smoke rising from the roofless central chamber showed that someone already occupied the site.

Four adventurers had established a temporary camp there. Their bedrolls lined one wall, and several damp packs hung from a rope near the fire. Chalk marks on the northern doorway matched the common system used by explorers to label mapped passages and unstable ground.

The oldest of the four recognized the Five Knots before Tessa finished introducing the party. His attention shifted toward the ridge hiding their airship, but he did not ask to see it.

"We cleared the upper caverns this morning. The eastern passage ends at a collapse. The northern branch drops into water after the third chamber." He said.

Kesh opened the copied survey and showed him the mapped section.

"Did you find reeds near the water?"

"Dark growth along the bank. We left it alone after one of us developed a rash."

The answer placed the vegetation below the ruin, but it did not establish that the plants matched Orin’s afterlife record.

Tessa told the group that the Five Knots intended to examine the lower stream. If they had not returned within two days, the campers were to carry a sealed message to the nearest settlement or give it to another airship crew. The message identified The Sixth Knot’s landing site and named the cavern they had entered. It contained nothing about the quest or the Underworld.

The first chambers matched the available survey. Fresh chalk arrows marked the safe side of a fractured ledge. A rope left by earlier explorers descended beside the northern wall. Water sounds grew louder beneath the third chamber.

Belda replaced the borrowed rope with one of her own before trusting the party’s weight to it. Orin inspected the stone around both anchors. Min lowered their supplies. Tessa descended first, followed by Kesh and Orin. Belda came last after confirming that the line could be recovered from below.

The black stream waited at the bottom.

Its surface reflected their lamps and the cavern ceiling, which made it different from the still water Tessa had seen in the Sea of Lanterns. Thick reeds grew along the nearest bank. They appeared black until Min held a light close enough to reveal deep blue along the edges.

Orin crouched beside them without touching the stems.

"These are the same shape. The channel in the Field of Reeds was narrower." Orin said.

Kesh studied the current. The mapped passage followed the stream east until the ceiling dropped into the water. A shallower branch entered from the west through a break in the stone. To the north, mineral deposits hid a narrow opening that did not appear on the survey.

He released a pinch of pale tracking dust above the water. Most of it followed the visible current east. A smaller portion drifted toward the northern opening.

"There is another pull." Kesh said.

They entered the northern branch sideways, keeping their packs above the water. The passage widened after several body lengths and split around a stone column. One route climbed toward dry ground. The other descended beside the stream.

Tessa raised her lantern between them. The light above the higher route reflected from wet stone. The lower passage swallowed the reflection after the first turn.

Her passage mark warmed against her system record.

They followed the water down.

The natural cavern gradually gave way to worked stone. Narrow channels had been cut beside the stream. Square recesses lined the walls at regular intervals, each one empty. Corathen was only months old, but the workmanship gave the route the weight of an old funerary passage.

Kesh stopped at every branch long enough to compare the current, airflow, and slope. Two side passages curved back toward the mapped caverns. A third ended above a deep pool.

The descending branch narrowed where the stream had cut through its outer edge. A broken shelf of stone left a gap between the Five Knots and the passage continuing below. Water filled the bottom, but Kesh’s weighted line failed to reach it. The darkness hid the depth.

Belda secured a rope around the nearest stone column. Orin rejected the first anchor point after part of its surface broke beneath his hammer, then found a solid seam farther from the edge. Tessa crossed with the first line while Min controlled the tension and Kesh watched the air moving through the gap. The current pulled toward the lower passage rather than rising from the pool.

Once Tessa fixed the second anchor, the others crossed with their packs clipped to a separate line. Orin came last and inspected both anchors before leaving the crossing lines in place for their return. Belda marked the gap on Kesh’s map.

The obstruction confirmed that casual explorers had stopped before reaching the worked section. The chalk marks from the upper caverns ended on the other side of the gap.

Beyond it, the path continued downward until the stream widened and slowed beneath a wall of dark stone.

Black reeds crowded both banks.

The wall contained no visible door. Five shallow depressions formed an arc above the waterline. Each one resembled a broken portion of the descending-gate symbol in the party record.

Belda approached first. The funerary mark she had earned in Valhalla appeared above her hand and cast a muted gray light across the center of the wall. Lines spread outward from it, joining the five depressions.

"This is the gate." Belda said.

Min opened the five-part pattern he had assembled in the Forge Beyond the Flame. The symbol showed more than the placement of their marks. It established the order in which the fragments had to be presented, beginning with the lowest piece beneath the waterline.

Orin found the corresponding recess by reaching into the stream. Kesh secured a rope around his waist while he cleared silt from the stone. When the first depression became visible, Orin placed his passage mark into it through the shared quest interface.

The stone accepted the mark and held its outline in dark green light.

Tessa placed the second. Kesh and Belda followed according to Min’s pattern. Min waited until the four fragments had stabilized before adding the final piece at the center.

The complete symbol appeared across the wall.

Stone shifted beneath their boots.

The black wall divided along lines hidden a moment earlier. Water flowed through the widening gap without flooding the passage beyond. A stairway descended beside it, each step cut into stone that disappeared beneath the dark stream farther below.

The movement carried through the caverns.

Voices sounded from the upper passage. The four adventurers from the ruin had followed the ropes across the gap. They appeared at the last bend with weapons ready, then slowed when they saw the open wall.

Their leader looked from the Five Knots to the glowing symbol.

"Was that here this morning?"

"The wall was." Kesh said.

The group’s mapper opened the survey they had completed that morning. Her final measurement ended at the same stretch of stone now divided around the stairway. She had recorded the stream slipping through cracks beneath it and marked the wall as solid. The new opening occupied space that their measurements had shown as unbroken rock.

She added the stairway without pretending to know where it led. The time, the five glowing recesses, and the identities of the party that opened them went beside the drawing.

The man moved close enough to examine the five lit recesses. He copied their arrangement onto a wax tablet without touching the stone.

One of his companions stepped toward the opening. A translucent barrier formed across the first stair.

[Passage mark not recognized.]

[Complete an eligible afterlife objective to earn access.]

The adventurer withdrew. The barrier disappeared, leaving the stair visible.

The activation had revealed the route without granting every witness entry. The copied pattern preserved the appearance of the marks, but the gate had recognized the people who earned them.

Tessa gave the other group a second sealed message containing the location of The Sixth Knot and the time they entered. She asked them to deliver it if the Five Knots failed to return within the stated window. The leader accepted it after reading the delivery instructions written on the outside.

Belda tightened the straps on her pack. Min checked the protected case holding their spare lights. Orin moved the climbing rope where he could reach it without removing the rest of his equipment. Kesh added the open wall and the rejected follower to his map.

Tessa looked down the stairway. The air rising from below carried damp stone, cold water, and a faint smell like extinguished candles.

"We found the entrance." Min said.

"We found the first part of it." Tessa replied.

The Five Knots crossed the threshold together.

The barrier admitted each of them as their passage marks passed through it. The stair remained visible behind them until Min, the last member, reached the fifth step.

The stone wall closed.

The glowing marks vanished from the cavern side. The witnesses remained beside an unbroken surface with their copied pattern and the knowledge that a road had opened there.

Inside the descent, the Five Knots’ shared quest changed.

The black stream continued down beside them. Their lamps illuminated the next twenty steps before the stair curved out of sight.

Tessa took the lead, and the Five Knots followed the water deeper beneath Corathen.
