Chapter 238: The Five Knots Fall
The Five Knots had already survived the Dwarven Airship level often enough to know where the first attack should appear.
That knowledge did not help when every creature in the attack was five levels stronger and carried an elite designation.
The option had appeared when Tessa selected the harder version of the challenge.
[Elite Ascension]
[All hostile creatures will be increased by five levels.]
[All hostile creatures will be upgraded to elite variants.]
[Rewards and achievement opportunities will increase accordingly.]
They had discussed the modifier before accepting it. The ordinary version no longer tested their best skills. They had won the Grand Race, purchased their own airship, and spent enough time flying over Corathen that returning to the standard challenge would have offered practice without much uncertainty.
The Sixth Knot remained in Corathen. Level Three supplied its own dwarven airship, its own crew, and whatever damage the challenge intended them to endure.
Tessa stood at the control wheel while the dwarven pilot monitored the damaged engine gauges beside her. Three shapes rose from the clouds ahead.
"They are early." Kesh said.
"They are faster." Tessa said.
On their earlier attempts, the first attackers had climbed behind the airship and given Belda time to adjust the rigging while Min coaxed more power from the engines. The elite creatures divided before reaching them. One climbed above the balloon. Two swept beneath the hull.
Tessa forced the airship into a descending turn. Kesh called the lower attackers’ positions from the navigation platform. Belda released one sail before it could become a brake against the maneuver. Min shifted power away from an engine the dwarves could no longer protect. Orin moved along the outer hull, repairing damage before the wind could widen it.
They responded as the crew they had become. The first attack still left two dwarves injured and one steering cable partly severed.
The challenge did not slow down to let them recover.
Elite lizardfolk reached the airship during the second assault. Their boarding hooks bit deeper than the ones the Five Knots remembered, and cutting the first ropes only cleared space for more. Belda abandoned the rigging long enough to stop a boarder from reaching Kesh. Orin sealed a breach beneath the navigation platform. Min kept the damaged engines balanced while Tessa directed the dwarves toward the valley that marked the final stretch of the level.
They could still succeed until the dragon appeared.
The creature descended through the clouds with the elite marker burning above it. Its first pass tore open part of the balloon and forced the airship toward the cliffs. Tessa corrected the fall. Min found enough power to keep the hull from striking stone. Kesh identified the only remaining route into the valley.
The boarders used the damage to reach the deck in numbers the defenders could not contain.
Belda held the narrow stairs leading to the control platform while dwarven crew members dragged their wounded below. She could have retreated after them. Instead, she stayed where the passage forced the lizardfolk to approach one at a time.
The system recorded her decision before the third attacker forced her to one knee.
Orin heard the hull split near the crew quarters. He crossed a section already beginning to collapse and locked the inner braces by hand. The repair could not save the airship, but it kept the deck above the injured dwarves from falling on them.
Min remained at the engines because abandoning them would turn a controlled descent into a drop. He continued shifting power through ruined channels after smoke filled the compartment and the controls burned his hands.
Kesh used the last stable moments to give Tessa a route between two stone spires. He passed the same instructions to the dwarven pilot, then remained at the navigation platform to warn them when the wind changed.
Tessa stayed at the controls. The airship had no safe landing left, but it still had a less deadly place to fall.
The Five Knots died within a minute of one another.
Their bodies appeared in Sanctuary’s hospital without the wounds that had killed them. Torn flesh, broken bones, and burns vanished during the transfer. Five beds filled in quick succession while gnome attendants moved between them.
None of the restored bodies awakened.
Notices appeared above every bed.
[Physical restoration complete.]
[Consciousness engaged with Afterlife Authority.]
[Protected hospital placement confirmed.]
[Automatic return: 11:59:52]
Tessa became aware in a dark space without walls. She could still remember the control wheel jerking beneath her hands, but her afterlife form carried no burns or broken bones. A message waited in front of her.
[Your physical body has been restored and is sleeping in Sanctuary’s hospital.]
[You may awaken there immediately.]
[One afterlife destination has recognized your actions.]
[Sea of Lanterns]
[A harbor for those who accepted responsibility for guiding others through danger and remained at their post when abandoning it would have been easier.]
[Your qualification reflects repeated conduct. Your final flight completed the requirement.]
Tessa was then given two choices.
[Enter the Sea of Lanterns]
[Awaken in Sanctuary]
Tessa focused on the notice until it confirmed that entering would not endanger the restored body. She could leave whenever she chose. If she remained, the clock would return her automatically.
The destination had not rewarded her for dying. It had recognized why she remained at the controls when escape was still possible.
Tessa entered the Sea of Lanterns.
Darkness became a harbor beneath a starless sky. Hundreds of lanterns floated across black water, each one marking a channel that disappeared into the distance. Boats waited at stone docks. Some were small enough for one passenger. Others carried crews who watched the lights and adjusted their sails whenever the channels shifted.
A harbor attendant offered Tessa a place aboard a narrow vessel whose pilot had to guide three other boats through moving fog.
Kesh received a different choice.
[Endless Library]
[A refuge for those who sought knowledge, preserved it accurately, and used it to guide more than themselves.]
[Your qualification reflects the routes, records, and warnings you shared with your party. Your final navigation completed the requirement.]
He entered a circular chamber lined with shelves that continued upward beyond sight. The first desk contained blank maps. The second held accounts written by travelers who had described the same roads differently. Kesh’s introductory task required him to compare the accounts and mark the route supported by all of them.
The work resembled navigation without wind, distance, or a horizon. He was halfway through it when a sealed catalog entry appeared at the edge of the desk.
[The Road Beneath Still Water]
[Party-linked quest]
[This quest may create one optional objective for each eligible party member currently visiting an afterlife destination.]
[Accepting this quest will not connect the destinations or reveal their living entrances.]
Kesh read every line twice before accepting.
Belda entered Valhalla.
The message that greeted her did not call her a great warrior or praise the number of enemies she had killed.
[A realm for those who accepted danger and continued fighting for a purpose beyond themselves.]
[You could have followed the wounded crew below. You remained to hold the passage for them.]
She chose the realm and appeared near a camp overlooking a broad battlefield. A guide offered her a choice between joining a formal battle and completing a defensive trial beside the camp. Belda selected the trial. She was still learning the weight of the shield she had been given when Kesh’s accepted quest reached her.
[Party objective available.]
[Earn the funerary mark carried by the final defender.]
[Participation is optional.]
Belda accepted.
Min reached the Forge Beyond the Flame.
[A workshop for those who built, repaired, and preserved what others depended upon.]
[Your qualification reflects repeated work performed under pressure. Your final effort kept the airship controllable long enough for others to act.]
The forge did not celebrate his death. It presented a damaged mechanism and asked whether he wanted to repair it, study it, or return to his body. Min chose to repair it. The mechanism separated into five interlocking pieces once the party quest appeared.
[Party objective available.]
[Reassemble the passage symbol without forcing a false fit.]
Orin’s destination was the Field of Reeds.
[A resting place for those whose patient labor preserved the lives and work of others without demanding recognition.]
[Your qualification reflects repeated service. Your final repair protected people who could no longer protect themselves.]
He entered a wide field divided by narrow channels of clear water. Homes and gardens stood among the reeds. Nothing attacked him. His first task was to restore a collapsed bank before the water drained away from a neighboring field.
When the party quest arrived, the water darkened and revealed a second channel filled with black reeds.
[Party objective available.]
[Restore the hidden channel and record where its water disappears beneath stone.]
The five destinations remained separate. No member saw the others. The party bond carried only the quest objectives and the progress each member chose to share.
Tessa guided the boats through fog that erased every landmark except the lanterns. One lantern brightened only when aimed toward water that reflected no sky. She recorded the direction in the party quest.
Kesh completed the disputed map and gained access to one line in the sealed catalog.
[Where still water drinks no sky, five marked travelers may find the road beneath the dead.]
Belda held her assigned ground until the defensive trial ended and received a funerary mark rather than an ordinary victory mark.
Min assembled the five pieces into a symbol that resembled a gate descending beneath a line of water.
Orin reopened the black-reed channel and watched it vanish through a crack beneath an old stone wall.
Their rewards remained part of their system records.
Each could have left after completing the objective. None did. They spent the remaining time exploring the services their earned destinations offered, comparing trainers, examining locked challenges, and learning what further achievements might provide.
Their clocks expired within minutes of one another.
Tessa awakened first. Her hand tightened around a control wheel that was no longer there. A hospital blanket shifted across her restored body.
Four nearby beds still held the sleeping members of her party.
Kesh awakened last. Before he spoke, the system placed a quest notice where all five could see it.
[The Road Beneath Still Water]
[Party quest retained after return.]
