Chapter 410: Chapter 410
"He... why did he just leave like that?" Jenny asked, completely bewildered.
Weren’t the two of them friends?
Why did Adam glance at Suzy and then walk away without a single second thought, his steps never even hesitating?
"It’s like he doesn’t recognize me," Suzy murmured, dazed.
"How long has it been since you two last saw each other? Long enough to just forget you?" Jenny asked, stunned.
"We haven’t seen each other since the apocalypse began, though we were in touch at first," Suzy replied softly.
"...Still, that doesn’t make any sense. Should we go after him and check?" Jenny suggested.
Suzy didn’t answer in words—she simply grabbed Jenny’s arm and pulled her along.
"Hurry!"
The two bolted out of the Mission Hall and spotted Adam, who hadn’t walked far. But what made Suzy’s heart sink was the sight of the woman standing right beside him.
Rina!
It was Rina again!
Suzy’s footsteps faltered at the entrance of the Mission Hall.
Her eyes traversed the short distance between the steps and the main road, locking onto the pair just ahead.
Adam stood by the roadside, turned sideways in her general direction, but his eyes weren’t on her.
He was looking at Rina.
Rina stood right by his side, intimate and casual, one hand resting naturally on his forearm as if waiting for him to walk with her. Tilting her head up slightly, she spoke to him with that same smile Suzy had seen time and time again.
Adam didn’t pull away; a faint curve softened the edge of his lips.
Suzy stood frozen, unable to look away. Her fingers gripped the wooden doorframe, tightening bit by bit until her knuckles turned pale.
Beside her, Jenny followed her gaze and took in the scene. A surge of helplessness washed over her. She opened her mouth to speak, but found no words and closed it again.
Jenny had long anticipated that Adam and Rina were close—after all, Adam was now Rina’s fiancé.
What she hadn’t anticipated was that Adam would completely ignore Suzy, as though she were a ghost from a life he never lived.
Jenny hardly dared to glance at Suzy. In a situation like this, she had no idea how to offer comfort.
A short distance away, Rina seemed to sense eyes on them. She turned her head, following the line of sight back toward the hall entrance.
And there she saw them: Suzy and Jenny. 𝔣𝖗ⅇℯ
Those two again?
Rina’s brows knit together.
Talk about bad luck, Rina thought, irritated at running into the two people she disliked most in the base.
When it came to Jenny, Rina naturally harbored no fond feelings. She knew full well that Jenny despised her, but why should she care about someone who hated her?
What truly irked Rina, however, was Jenny’s sharp intuition.
That wretched girl had an alarmingly keen gut instinct. Ever since Luke had started following Rina, Jenny had been quietly investigating her background. Rina knew she was snooping in the shadows, yet couldn’t catch her with any proof.
It felt like a venomous snake lurking in the dark, patiently biding its time to strike.
If she actually managed to uncover anything... Rina suppressed the thought, letting out a quiet breath.
An eyesore always hangs out with another eyesore.
Rina found Suzy particularly unpleasant to look at now.
For one, Suzy was constantly glued to Jenny. Birds of a feather flock together—what good could Suzy possibly be?
Second, after returning yesterday, Rina had looked into Mark’s records and discovered that he and Suzy had entered the base together.
The registration form didn’t list any family relationship between them.
Which meant they were unrelated—just "friends."
That made it even worse.
A man and a woman surviving together in the wasteland, leaning on each other, was the ultimate breeding ground for romantic feelings.
Rina had to admit that Suzy was pretty. Even with her skin currently looking dull and yellowish, it was obvious that her facial features were exceptionally well-proportioned.
The thought that something might have happened between Mark and this woman sent a sharp wave of jealousy surging through Rina, nearly consuming her.
Right now, everything about the two of them annoyed her.
Two people, double the eyesore.
"What are you looking at?"
Noticing that Rina was staring fixedly in one direction, Adam asked.
Out of curiosity, he followed her gaze.
His eyes locked directly with Suzy’s.
Seeing those familiar eyes once more, a strange, inexplicable sensation bloomed in Adam’s chest.
He instinctively knit his brows.
Why did that person feel so familiar?
Had he... met her somewhere before?
He searched through his memory, but found only an absolute blank. There wasn’t a single fragment related to Suzy in his mind.
Yet the sense of familiarity was undeniable.
Strange. Extremely strange.
"It’s nothing, just saw an acquaintance," Rina replied, withdrawing her gaze.
Adam asked, "You know them?"
Rina pulled his arm to lead him forward. "Not really ’know’ them, just bumped into them a few times. The one in black is Luke’s younger sister."
"And the one in brown?" Adam pressed.
Rina’s steps faltered. She cast a complex, searching look at Adam. "Why are you asking about her?"
An ominous feeling settled in her gut. 𝖋𝙧ⅇ
This was the first time Adam had ever taken the initiative to ask about another woman.
Was he really that interested in her?
No.
Absolutely not.
A bitter taste filled Rina’s mouth. She pouted, making her displeasure clear. "Why are you prying so much about her?"
Adam explained softly, "It’s nothing. I just feel like I’ve seen her somewhere before."
"Is that so?" Rina huffed. "You didn’t take a liking to her, did you?"
Adam let out a light laugh. "You’re overthinking."
Sensing that remaining here would only lead to more endless questioning from Rina, Adam took the lead and stepped forward. "Let’s head back."
The move played right into Rina’s hands.
The last thing she wanted was to stay here and look at Suzy and Jenny. What terrified her even more was the thought of Adam actually remembering something.
"Yeah, let’s go," Rina said, picking up her pace to catch up with him.
Their figures gradually faded into the distance until they disappeared entirely.
Only when they were completely out of sight did Suzy finally retract her gaze.
Jenny stood beside her, watching her slowly pull her eyes away. She wanted to say something, but as the words reached her lips, she swallowed them back down.
