Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 62: The First Horde
The black pulse inside the corpse continued to throb, casting a faint shadow across the metallic laboratory floor. Raviah stared at the abnormal reaction for several tense seconds, her mind racing through every piece of medical knowledge she had accumulated.
Her thoughts were abruptly cut short as the main console erupted into a series of sharp, mechanical alerts. The routine monitoring chatter vanished, replaced instantly by high-priority warning screens flashing across the emergency network.
[MULTIPLE BIOLOGICAL OUTBREAKS CONFIRMED]
[VEYRON CITY - CONTAINMENT FAILURE]
[EASTERN METROPOLIS - CONTAINMENT FAILURE]
[NORTHRIDGE CITY - CONTAINMENT FAILURE] 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ
Raviah’s expression hardened as she read the scrolling list of fallen sectors. The containment lines had failed simultaneously across three major urban zones, signaling that the infection was no longer an isolated event.
"Bring up the regional surveillance network," she ordered, her voice cutting through the noise of the panic.
The technician rapidly punched in a sequence of commands, causing the central holographic map to bloom into life. Three vast city grids were instantly highlighted in pulsing red markers, mapping the destruction in real time.
Thousands of infected individuals streamed through streets, residential districts, transit hubs, and former evacuation centers. Military barricades along the perimeters were buckling, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the surging crowds.
Before anyone could process the devastation, a secondary yellow alert flashed across the map interface.
[CIVILIAN MIGRATION DETECTED]
[ESTIMATED INFECTED POPULATION: ESCALATING]
[PRIMARY MOVEMENT VECTOR: SURVIVING POPULATION CENTERS]
Raviah felt a cold chill run down her spine as the tactical algorithms calculated the path of the oncoming horde. The arrows painted across the terrain map all pointed toward a single destination.
"They’re moving straight toward the survivors," Raviah said, her knuckles whitening against the edge of the console.
Rhyder’s eyes narrowed as he analyzed the vector lines cutting across the digital topography. "Then we establish a defensive corridor before they reach Sol Haven."
He immediately tapped his wrist comm, opening a broad-spectrum military command channel. "All available units, listen carefully. Abandon isolated containment positions if necessary and establish layered defensive lines along the southern approach to Sol Haven."
He stepped up to the main tactical interface, sweeping his hand across the glass display to mark several critical highway intersections. "First line here. Second line here. The final defensive corridor begins at the mountain pass."
His fingers moved with fast, practiced efficiency as he dialed in the exact parameters for engagement.
"Do not allow uncontrolled civilian traffic through the military line. Separate uninfected civilians from suspected exposure cases, and isolate anyone showing neurological abnormalities immediately."
The orders transmitted instantly through the tactical grid, setting the base into motion. Out on the airfield and supply roads, heavy engine roars signaled the immediate deployment of armored military convoys.
Raviah turned on her heel, facing the medical staff waiting in the staging area. "Prepare triage."
The chief technician hesitated, staring at the sheer size of the red zone on the radar. "How many are we expecting, Doctor?"
"All of them," Raviah replied without missing a beat, pointing toward the heavy blast doors leading into the lower complex.
"Convert the eastern medical wing into a quarantine ward," she directed, walking toward the equipment lockers. "The western surgical bay becomes emergency trauma. Anyone exposed to biological material goes through decontamination before entering."
"Yes, Doctor!" the staff yelled in unison, scattering instantly to clear the bays and set up containment fields.
Outside the fortress, along the winding pavement of the southern access road, the headlamps of approaching civilian vehicles appeared through the dusk. Within minutes, a trickle of refugees turned into dozens, then hundreds, clogging the primary thoroughfares.
The defensive corridor erupted into organized chaos as heavy military trucks pulled into position to construct makeshift barricades. Searchlights cut through the gathering darkness, pinning incoming vehicles in bright beams while armed soldiers shouted instructions over loudspeakers.
Medics darted through the crowded lanes, pulling screaming families and injured stragglers out of stalled cars. Amidst the noise, the first wave of infected broke through the treeline bordering the road.
They stumbled out from between abandoned sedans and flipped transport trucks, moving with a terrifying, jerky speed. Dozens quickly multiplied into hundreds, a wall of graying flesh and bloodshot eyes rushing forward without a single trace of fear.
Rhyder stood atop an armored transport, his rifle raised and locked into position. "Hold!"
The line of soldiers adjusted their grip on their weapons, iron sights fixed on the horde. The sound of snarling and heavy, frantic footsteps grew deafening as the distance closed.
"Hold!" Rhyder called out again, watching the target indicators tick down on his visor.
Fifty meters.
Thirty meters.
Twenty meters.
"Fire!" he commanded.
A wall of muzzle flashes illuminated the night sky as heavy automatic fire ripped through the front lines of the horde. Dozens of infected collapsed in a tangle of limbs, but those behind them trampled over the fallen without slowing down.
Rhyder dropped from the vehicle roof, signaling to his unit leaders as the defensive line took pressure. "Second formation! Left flank, hold the barrier!"
The entire southern pass turned into a roaring storm of gunfire, screams, thick grey smoke, and flashing red emergency lights. The infected threw themselves against the metal barricades, driven entirely by feral hunger.
On the opposite side of the barricades, Raviah was moving through the makeshift field hospital with practiced speed. She reached toward her coat, utilizing her spatial storage to instantly pull out fresh surgical tape, disinfectant, and bandages into her hands without missing a step.
"Over here!" a field medic yelled, hauling a bloodied civilian onto a folding gurney. "Doctor, we need a check!"
Raviah stepped forward, shining a penlight directly into the victim’s eyes. "Neurological response intact. No visible signs of infection. Move him to the inner ward!"
"Next!" she shouted, turning to the next stretcher without breathing for a second.
She checked vitals, applied tourniquets, and directed the flow of casualties without a single moment of hesitation. Her hands were covered in iodine and dirt, but her focus remained absolute amidst the gunfire.
