Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 59: The Zombie
The night surrounding Sol Haven had devolved into a maze of flashing red emergency lights, static-laced military broadcasts, and distant, echoing explosions.
General Rhyder Drakeheir’s split forces were already pushing out toward Veyron City, carving a path through clogged escape routes. The Third Regiment moved aggressively toward the northern evacuation corridor, while the Fifth Regiment secured the western agricultural road.
The remaining battalions fortified Sol Haven’s outer perimeter, entirely unaware that a new threat was already creeping toward their gates, not from a distant battlefield, but from the ranks of the wounded.
Several hours later, a military checkpoint set up along the southern evacuation route detected an approaching civilian vehicle.
The battered sedan swerved violently across the empty asphalt before slamming into a heavy concrete barrier.
Two armed soldiers immediately raised their rifles, stepping out from behind their sandbag bunker.
"Checkpoint! Step out of the vehicle with your hands visible!" the squad leader barked.
The driver’s side door clicked open, and a man stumbled out into the glare of the searchlights.
He was completely drenched in thick, drying blood. His shirt was shredded across his abdomen, his left eye was swollen shut, and his breathing came in shallow, desperate rasps.
"Please..." he gasped, dropping onto his knees in the gravel. "Help my family..."
The younger soldier lowered his rifle slightly, turning his head toward the bunker. "Medic!"
The wounded civilian suddenly lunged forward, grabbing the soldier’s sleeve with a frantic grip.
"Please... they’re still trapped back there..."
The squad medic rushed over, kneeling beside the man in the dirt. His pulse was racing at an impossible speed, and his skin radiated a dangerously high fever, yet he remained fully conscious and articulate.
He was alive, or so the soldiers believed.
Suddenly, the man’s fingers locked around the soldier’s arm like iron clamps. His entire body violently convulsed, his spine arching backward with a sickening, audible crack.
"Hold him down!" the squad leader yelled, grabbing the civilian’s shoulders.
A strangled, wet gurgle escaped the man’s throat as his head snapped back.
Then, his eyes changed. The natural brown color drained away in seconds, replaced by a cloudy, milky-gray film that spread rapidly across both pupils.
"What’s happening to him?" the soldier yelled, trying to pry the man’s fingers off his jacket.
The medic reached out to check the patient’s carotid artery. The moment his bare fingers brushed the man’s feverish neck, the civilian’s entire nervous system spasmed violently.
Every muscle in the man’s body contracted simultaneously with terrifying force.
His head snapped toward the medic, his teeth bared in a feral snarl.
The man lunged.
"Get back!" the squad leader screamed.
The medic tumbled backward into the gravel as the wounded civilian slammed into him with unnatural, brutal strength.
The squad leader swung the butt of his rifle, striking the attacker squarely across the jaw with enough force to shatter bone.
The blow should have knocked the man unconscious, but he did not even flinch. He simply twisted his head toward the squad leader, his jaw hanging at an unnatural angle.
There was no recognition left in those cloudy gray eyes, no pain, and no fear. There was only an insatiable, violent hunger.
He lunged a second time, snapping his teeth at the soldier’s throat.
Gunfire erupted across the dark checkpoint, lighting up the barricade in brief, violent flashes.
The man’s body finally collapsed onto the asphalt, riddled with bullets.
The soldiers stood frozen in the ringing silence, their rifles trembling as spent casings rolled across the concrete.
The medic scrambled back to his feet, staring down at the still form in horror. "Is he dead?"
The squad leader approached cautiously, extending two fingers to the man’s wrist. He felt nothing.
"Confirmed dead," the leader reported quietly.
He unclipped his emergency radio with a shaking hand, keying the command frequency.
"Command, this is Southern Checkpoint Seven," he said, his voice unsteady.
"Go ahead, Checkpoint Seven," static crackled over the line.
The squad leader swallowed hard, staring down at the clouded eyes of the corpse. "We have an unidentified biological incident involving a civilian casualty."
He took a slow breath before continuing. "The patient expired after displaying extreme neurological abnormalities and violent, unprovoked aggression."
He paused, adding the words that would soon send shockwaves through the surviving military forces.
"Requesting immediate biological containment protocols."
Inside Sol Haven’s underground medical laboratory, Raviah Solomon received the corpse less than an hour later.
She stood behind a thick, reinforced glass observation barrier, her dark eyes tracking the automated mechanical arms as they transferred the sealed bio-hazard bag onto a sterile examination table.
Rhyder had not yet returned from the evacuation operation in Veyron City, while the elite Nightfall Unit remained silently deployed around her inner perimeter.
Raviah barely noticed their presence, her doctor’s focus completely absorbed by the specimen.
She slid a fresh tissue slide under the high-powered electron microscope, adjusting the focal lens with steady fingers.
The cellular structure recovered from the deceased civilian was wildly abnormal. An unidentified biological pathogen was aggressively multiplying through the bloodstream, but it was not behaving like any virus or bacteria she had encountered in her medical career.
It was actively interacting with an outside force.
Raviah adjusted the light spectrum on the analyzer, zooming in on a damaged neural strand.
A faint, translucent shimmer vibrated within the dying cells.
She froze, her eyes widening as she re-checked the biological metrics.
"That’s impossible," she whispered to herself.
The lab technician standing near the control desk looked up. "What is it, Doctor?"
Raviah magnified the cellular feed onto the primary wall monitor. Tiny, radiant particles of energy were swirling directly through the infected nerve tissue.
The pathogen was not purely biological in nature. It was actively drawing upon and responding to the strange atmospheric energy that had flooded the region after the atmospheric fragments fell.
The pathogen was utilizing that ambient energy as a fuel source. Worse, it was using that power to forcefully re-wire the deceased patient’s central nervous system.
Raviah’s expression turned dead pale under the cold fluorescent lights.
"This isn’t a standard viral infection," she said, her voice dropping.
She looked through the glass at the pale corpse resting on the metal table. "The pathogen is synthesizing the elemental energy currently spreading through our atmosphere."
The technician’s face drained of color as he looked at the glowing readouts. "So the ambient atmospheric energy is causing the neurological changes?"
"Partially," Raviah explained, her fingers flying across her diagnostic console to run a chemical breakdown. "The biological contamination destroys the host’s higher brain functions, causing brain death. Then, the atmospheric energy acts as an external electrical current, forcibly stimulating the damaged neural pathways."
Her voice grew deathly quiet. "It is overriding biological death and forcing the muscular structure to move."
The technician stared at her in utter disbelief. "But if the patient’s brain is already dead..."
Raviah slowly raised her head, meeting his terrified gaze.
"That is the nightmare," she said softly.
The sterile laboratory suddenly felt ice-cold.
The dead were no longer remaining dead. The apocalyptic environment was actively learning how to reanimate and puppet the human body.
Raviah turned toward the technician, her voice snapping back into a firm, commanding doctor’s tone. "Keep every single sample strictly isolated under level-four containment. Absolutely no one enters or exits this isolation lab without full biological pressure suits."
"Yes, Doctor!" the technician replied, turning toward the door lock controls.
BEEP!
BEEP!
BEEP!
A sharp, high-pitched electronic alarm screamed from the examination table’s heart rate monitor.
Raviah’s head snapped toward the isolation chamber.
On the cold steel table, the dead man’s gloved fingers twitched.
Once.
Twice.
Then, his chest suddenly expanded in a violent, artificial breath.
Raviah stopped breathing entirely, her hand hovering over her energy blade.
Inside the glass chamber, the corpse’s milky-gray, clouded eyes slowly snapped open.
And those dead, hungry eyes locked directly onto Raviah.
Without warning, the corpse slammed its palms against the steel table, sitting bolt upright as a guttural, inhuman screech echoed through the containment room’s intercom.
The metal restraints around its wrists groaned under an impossible surge of sudden physical strength.
The technician stumbled backward in terror, hitting the emergency lock button. "Doctor! It’s reanimated!"
Raviah stood her ground, her dark eyes narrowed as she watched the cloudy-eyed monster thrash against its leather straps.
She accessed her spatial storage dimension with a flick of her mind, silently pulling out a high-grade energy suppression syringe and loading it into her pneumatic launcher.
"Keep the inner glass barrier sealed," Raviah commanded, her voice icy and controlled as she stepped up to the bio-hazard airlock. "The first zombie has officially awakened, and I need to know how much damage it takes to kill it permanently."
