Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 18: Someone Is Watching
"Someone has been asking very specific questions about you." The words hung heavy in the cool air of the farmhouse office, yet Raviah remained perfectly still. The security consultant’s grim warning merely confirmed the persistent dread that had been growing in her chest for weeks.
Someone had finally noticed her preparations. She had expected local suspicion or corporate curiosity eventually, but the sheer speed at which the investigation had escalated deeply concerned her.
"Find out who," she ordered, her dark eyes locking onto the broad-shouldered professional standing across from her desk.
The consultant gave a crisp nod. "We are already running the registration plates on those civilian vehicles parked near the southern road."
"I do not want an open confrontation," Raviah added quickly, her voice flat and unyielding. "We cannot afford to draw local law enforcement or the press to the property."
"Understood, Doctor Solomon."
"I want complete intelligence," she continued, tapping a single slender finger against her wooden desk. "Where those vehicles originate, who owns the firms, where they travel after their shifts, and who is receiving their reports."
"I will handle it personally, Doctor Solomon."
"Keep this investigation completely separate from the primary construction crews and farm hands," she instructed. "No one else on this property needs to know we are being watched."
The consultant gave a final, brief nod before turning on his heel and exiting the office.
Raviah waited until the heavy oak door latched shut before reaching for her encrypted laptop. Her fingers flew across the keyboard, bypassing standard security protocols to trace unusual financial and digital movements around her recent corporate transactions.
The answer she uncovered appeared far sooner than she had anticipated.
Zachary Taylor.
Raviah’s expression hardened into a bitter, icy mask as his full name appeared across the glowing screen. She quickly pulled up his recent travel logs, corporate wire transfers, and communication patterns over the past several weeks.
Zachary had been suspiciously active since their abrupt breakup. He had reached out to several prominent figures connected to her former financial management firm.
He had placed subtle inquiries regarding the luxury assets and properties she had recently liquidated. He had even questioned mutual acquaintances about her sudden interest in large-scale rural development.
The scattered pieces of the puzzle slowly connected in her mind. Zachary was not investigating the impending collapse of human civilization. He was investigating her.
Raviah leaned back into her high-backed chair, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips. In Zachary’s arrogant mind, she was still the compliant, accommodating woman who had spent three years accommodating his every whim.
She was the obedient girlfriend who had never questioned his dismissive decisions or his rampant ambition. She was merely a successful surgeon who had quietly accumulated wealth without ever displaying grand desires beyond her medical practice.
He simply could not comprehend why she had walked away from his life so suddenly. Because his ego refused to accept rejection, he had fabricated a logical explanation that fit his worldview.
She was hiding something valuable from him. Secret funds, hidden corporate assets, or perhaps a lucrative private investment venture she had kept quiet.
Maybe she had discovered a financial opportunity through her elite medical contacts and decided to keep the profits for herself. Whatever foolish conclusion he had reached, Zachary clearly believed Raviah was concealing a fortune that belonged in his domain.
He was completely, tragically wrong.
The money itself was no longer the important variable. Raviah was systematically converting every remaining digit of her liquid wealth into physical resources that could survive the total extinction of the old world.
Food reserves, clean water networks, surgical medicine, independent energy, heavy fortifications, and arable land were all that mattered.
She almost let out a dark laugh into the empty room. Zachary was frantically searching for hidden bank accounts while the world itself was preparing to burn to ash.
Her fingers moved smoothly across the mechanical keyboard once again. She accessed the fresh surveillance files her security consultant had just uploaded to her private server.
Several unfamiliar civilian sedans had indeed been spotted parked along the public roads near the valley. Their movements aligned perfectly with individuals connected directly to Zachary’s extensive corporate network.
One vehicle was registered to a high-end private investigation agency he frequently retained for corporate espionage. Another belonged to a private security firm he utilized for executive protection.
Raviah stared at the high-definition photos of the investigators holding telephoto lenses. He had actually hired professionals to stalk her movements. She felt no genuine surprise, only a deep, hollow disappointment that he still viewed her as a piece of property he could track and control.
Her smartphone vibrated silently against the wooden desk surface. A short text message from her senior consultant appeared on the screen.
[We have positively identified one of the field investigators. Confirmed direct connection to Taylor Holdings.]
Raviah’s eyes remained icy and unblinking. She typed out a concise command in response.
[Maintain distance and continue counter-surveillance. Do not reveal under any circumstances that we are aware of their presence.]
She tapped the send button and closed the messaging application immediately.
She had zero intention of confronting Zachary right now.
There was no strategic benefit in exposing her awareness of his foolish game. As long as he believed she was merely hiding a secret financial portfolio, he would continue to underestimate her true motives.
Raviah closed the intelligence files and returned to her master procurement ledgers. There were still far too many critical resources left to secure before the windows closed.
Livestock breeding stock had to be delivered, bulk fuel reserves needed underground housing, specialized agricultural machinery was awaiting transport, and additional surgical pharmaceuticals had to be acquired.
The unknown corporate buyer was accelerating regional market shortages, while Zachary was beginning to dig into her private affairs. She needed to move faster than ever before.
Elsewhere, across the sprawling metropolis, Zachary Taylor sat behind the polished mahogany desk of his private executive office. A detailed financial audit lay open before him, its pages illuminated by the soft glow of a desk lamp. His expression was thoroughly grim as he stared at the numbers.
He still could not make sense of Raviah Solomon.
They had spent three comfortable years together, building a life that should have culminated in her absolute devotion.
Then, without a single warning sign, she had cold-heartedly ended everything.
She had sold her luxury sports cars, terminated her high-end leases, and liquidated her private investments.
She had quietly established a new agricultural entity called Sol Haven Agricultural Holdings, purchased a massive rural property, and begun pouring an astonishing amount of capital into its development.
It was completely irrational behavior for a brilliant surgeon. It made no sense at all unless she knew something lucrative that he did not.
Zachary leaned back into his leather chair, crossing his arms over his chest.
"She is hiding money from me," he muttered to the quiet office.
His primary assistant stood respectfully near the desk, holding a slim leather folder. "How much capital do you estimate she has remaining, sir?"
"We do not know yet," Zachary snapped, his jaw clenching with irritation.
"Then how would you like us to proceed with the inquiry?" the assistant asked cautiously.
Zachary’s eyes narrowed into dark, possessive slits. "Investigate everything she has touched over the last six weeks."
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a high-resolution photograph, and slid it aggressively across the polished wood. It depicted an aerial view of Raviah’s newly acquired valley property, showing open fields and construction vehicles.
"Start with this rural farmland," Zachary commanded, pointing a heavy finger at the image.
The assistant picked up the photograph, examining the wide green fields. "Should we focus our efforts on the parent company?"
"Sol Haven Agricultural Holdings," Zachary specified, his voice hardening.
"I want a complete audit of the land purchase, their active construction contracts, their material suppliers, and every employee on their payroll. I want to know why a world-class doctor suddenly needs twelve hundred acres of isolated farmland."
The assistant nodded swiftly. "And if our team uncovers irregularities?"
Zachary stared at the photograph, his deep suspicion warping into cold determination. "Then I want to know exactly what Raviah Solomon is trying to hide from me."
Neither man in the high-rise office recognized the absurd irony of their investigation.
Zachary genuinely believed he was uncovering a petty financial secret, completely oblivious to the reality that beneath that quiet farmland, Raviah was constructing an impenetrable fortress for the end of the world.
And now, driven by his wounded pride, he had just ordered his people to dig directly into the one place Raviah could never afford to let him discover.
