Doomsday Rebirth: The Doctor and the General's Survival Farm
Chapter 138: The Core Medicine
Evening settled over New Frontier Settlement, casting long shadows across the frontier research laboratory. Beyond its reinforced windows, construction lights illuminated the unfinished residential blocks, while distant patrol vehicles moved along the mountain perimeter.
Inside, Raviah stood before a sealed laboratory chamber, studying the luminous droplets collected from the silver-veined plant.
She reached into her spatial dimension to retrieve a pair of handling gloves, adjusting her white coat before stepping closer to the workstation. The secondary compound had remained stable after extraction, its faint reflection off the glass interface.
Preliminary analysis suggested that it interacted with elemental energy differently from the substance that repaired damaged pathways.
Instead of rebuilding damaged structures, it appeared to influence the rate at which a core absorbed and processed energy. If they could control that process, they might have discovered a way to accelerate core recovery without consuming the user’s vitality.
“Display the energy circulation model,” Raviah instructed.
Elias activated the central monitor with a tap of his fingers. A holographic representation of an Elemental core appeared above the examination table, its energy pathways showing in blue lines.
“The conventional recovery process depends on environmental energy absorption and gradual stabilization,” Elias explained, scrolling through the medical readouts.
“When an Elemental exhausts their reserves, their core needs time to restore its energy balance. If the damage is severe, forcing additional energy into the core can make the condition worse.”
“Especially if the root cannot regulate the incoming energy,” Raviah added, keeping her eyes fixed on the blue pathways.
“Exactly,” Elias replied, adjusting the projection’s focal point. “Existing recovery solutions replenish energy, but they do not necessarily improve the core’s ability to process it.”
Raviah examined the floating model, taking in every detail. In the aftermath of the apocalypse, Elementals had become essential to humanity’s survival.
Yet their greatest advantage could also become a weakness. Exhausted fighters needed hours or days to recover, while those who pushed beyond their limits risked damaging their cores permanently.
A medicine capable of accelerating natural recovery could change the balance between survival and exhaustion. But there was one condition she refused to compromise.
“It must not consume vitality,” she said firmly, her tone leaving no room for debate. “No shortening a patient’s lifespan, no extracting energy from healthy tissue, and no forcing the core to burn its own biological reserves.”
Elias nodded, recording her requirements directly into the system parameters. “Then we will need to distinguish genuine recovery from temporary overactivation.”
They began working with the secondary compound. Under controlled conditions, Elias separated its active components while Raviah used her biological root to observe their interactions with a simulated core.
The initial mixture produced a brief increase in energy circulation, followed by an abrupt decline.
Raviah immediately stopped the experiment, stepping back from the terminal. “Too aggressive. It is stimulating energy transmission without establishing a stable recovery cycle.”
Elias recorded the failed attempt and adjusted the concentration levels. Their second formulation produced a weaker response but maintained it for longer, while the third failed to penetrate the simulated core’s outer energy channels.
For nearly two hours, they tested different concentrations, carrier solutions, and stabilization methods.
Finally, Raviah introduced a minute quantity of the refined compound into a model designed to reproduce the conditions of an exhausted E-Rank core. The energy inside the model flickered uncertainly. Then it began to circulate through every channel.
Raviah leaned closer to the monitor, her breath catching slightly. “Check the surrounding biological markers.”
Elias ran the deep diagnostic analysis without delay. “No increase in cellular degradation. No abnormal energy consumption from the simulated biological tissue.”
“Vitality expenditure?” she asked, her voice dropping into intense focus.
“Undetected,” Elias reported, looking up from his screen.
For the first time that evening, Raviah allowed herself a cautious smile. They had not yet produced a medicine suitable for human use, but they had established a promising formulation that appeared to accelerate core recovery without drawing energy from the body’s living reserves.
She labeled the sample Core Recovery Prototype One before securing it.
“Now we need a living subject,” Elias stated, turning off the primary simulation.
“An exhausted Elemental with a stable medical condition,” Raviah replied, crossing her arms. “No existing core damage, no active mutation, and no incompatible substances in their system. We will monitor every change.”
The first volunteer was a young E-Rank Elemental named Joren, a member of the settlement’s defensive unit.
He had spent the afternoon training under supervision and had agreed to participate after a medical examination confirmed that his core was temporarily depleted rather than injured.
Joren sat inside the observation chamber, his hands fidgeting nervously against his knees.
“Doctor, is this going to hurt?” he asked, looking through the glass at her.
“That depends on how your core responds,” Raviah answered honestly, keeping her voice steady. “We will stop immediately if your readings become unstable. You can withdraw your consent at any time.”
Joren swallowed hard and nodded. “I understand. I am ready.”
Raviah administered a carefully measured dose of the prototype under continuous monitoring.
Elias tracked Joren’s core frequency, root activity, heart rate, and metabolic indicators while Raviah observed the energy pathways directly through her biological root. For several long seconds, nothing happened inside the chamber.
Then Joren’s core began to emit a soft, steady light. The familiar signs of exhaustion gradually faded from his energy signature as his core’s circulation accelerated. Unlike previous stimulants, the process did not produce erratic fluctuations or draw detectable energy from his biological reserves.
“Recovery rate is increasing,” Elias announced, watching the data streams climb.
Raviah kept her attention fixed firmly on Joren’s vital signs. “Any pain? Dizziness? Unusual pressure?”
“None,” Joren replied, sounding genuinely surprised as he raised his hands to look at them. “I feel warmer. It is as if the energy is moving through my body far more easily.”
The diagnostic display climbed steadily as the minutes passed. Core stability improved, energy circulation strengthened, and his depleted reserves began replenishing at a rate far beyond the expected baseline.
Then the readings changed again with sudden violence. Joren’s core pulsed with a burst of silver-blue light.
Elias stared at the monitor, his fingers freezing over the keys. “That is not possible.”
Raviah immediately stepped toward the observation chamber glass. “What happened?”
“His core frequency is shifting rapidly,” Elias reported, his voice rising in alarm. “The energy structure is reorganizing itself.”
The E-Rank signature began to rise, its previous limitations giving way to a far more complex pattern. A series of bright warning banners flashed across the central display.
[CORE ADVANCEMENT DETECTED.]
[CURRENT RANK: E.]
[EVOLUTIONARY THRESHOLD: APPROACHING C-RANK PARAMETERS.]
Raviah’s expression hardened instantly into cold concentration. “Terminate the administration. Now.”
Elias cut the delivery system immediately, but Joren’s core continued showing bright light as the accumulated energy settled into a completely new configuration. The readings surged once more, flooding the monitors with alarming metrics.
[CORE STABILITY: MAINTAINED.]
[ENERGY CAPACITY: RAPIDLY INCREASING.]
[PROJECTED RANK: C.]
Raviah stared at the display, hardly believing the raw data rendering before her eyes. The prototype had been meticulously designed to accelerate basic recovery, not force rank advancement.
Yet their first successful living test had pushed an E-Rank Elemental directly toward C-Rank, opening a realm of dangerous, unpredictable possibilities.
