Chapter 239 -231: The Secret Recipe for the Fertilizer

Bai Zhi said, “It’s not really a secret. I just used a type of fertilizer that accelerates growth. But this fertilizer is very tedious to make, and I don’t have any extra. Otherwise, I would have given some to everyone.”

Everyone here was a farmer. Hearing there was such a miraculous fertilizer, who wouldn’t want it? Which family wouldn’t want a bountiful harvest in just one month? They might even get several harvests a year! If that were true, who would still worry about not living well?

So, everyone started talking at once, pleading with Bai Zhi to share the recipe for the fertilizer.

Liu and Old Mrs. Bai squeezed their way to the center of the crowd and said to the people surrounding Bai Zhi, “You’re all ridiculous. This is our Zhi’s exclusive secret recipe. If she told all of you, would it still be an exclusive secret recipe? If you want to know the secret, fine. Pay up. Ten taels of silver per person.” As they spoke, Old Mrs. Bai and Liu shamelessly held out their hands to the crowd.

“Hey, old woman! Weren’t you just saying you’d separated from Bai Zhi and her mother, that you’d each go your separate ways? It’s only been a short while, and now you’re affectionately calling her ‘our Zhi’? Have you no shame?” The one who spoke was Mrs. Yingzi. Bai Zhi had saved her daughter Yingzi’s life before, and she had never forgotten it. She had originally planned to help them out, but after seeing that Bai Zhi and Zhao Lan were managing to live well on their own, she hadn’t interfered. But now, seeing the true colors of Old Mrs. Bai and Liu, she simply couldn’t stand it.

Liu spat contemptuously at Mrs. Yingzi. “This is none of your damn business! This is a Bai Family matter, what’s it to you? In short, if you want the fertilizer’s secret recipe, pay up first. Ten taels of silver per person.”

Zhao Lan, who had been squatting by the river washing tubers, couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up and yelled at Liu, “Liu Guihua, have you no shame? Let’s not even discuss whether to charge for this recipe. Even if we were going to charge, would it be your place to collect the money? Who do you think you are?”

Liu Guihua gave a dry laugh. “Look at you, getting all worked up. Wasn’t I just trying to help you? There are so many people, how could you handle it all by yourself? Don’t mistake my kind intentions.”

“Kind intentions?” Not only did Zhao Lan laugh, but Bai Zhi laughed too. Even the villagers surrounding Bai Zhi burst into laughter.

It was as if this was the funniest joke they had ever heard.

Old Mrs. Bai said angrily, “What are you laughing at? Don’t you all forget, when all is said and done, that Zhao Lan will always be our Sanzhu’s wife, and Bai Zhi is our Sanzhu’s daughter! That is an indisputable fact, a fact that can never be changed.”

Bai Zhi shot back, “So what? My father is dead—dead because of your cruelty and selfishness. My mother is no daughter of yours, and I have absolutely nothing to do with you. Our family’s affairs are none of your business.”

“Exactly! They’re utterly shameless. They pounce the second they see a chance for profit. If the mother and daughter were in trouble, would they pounce like this then?”

“No way. In their eyes, they probably never even saw the mother and daughter as human!”

With everyone chiming in one after another, even Old Mrs. Bai and Liu, whose skin was as thick as a city wall, finally blushed with shame.

Old Mrs. Bai grumbled, “I only meant well. Look at you all with your nasty mouths, listen to the awful things you’re saying.”

Bai Zhi ignored her and turned to the villagers. “Uncles and Aunties, it’s not that I’m unwilling to tell you the secret of this fertilizer. It’s just that obtaining the raw materials for it is extremely dangerous. The last time we went into the mountains, it was specifically for this fertilizer.”
