Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich
Chapter 230: Reclaiming His Identity
Chapter 230 -222: Reclaiming His Identity
“You didn’t happen to hear what I said to Meng Nan, did you?” She still found it hard to believe. Their ways of thinking were astonishingly similar.
Hu Feng glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, his gaze cool. “Think what you want.”
She gazed intently at the man beside her. Even though he’d lost his memories and knew neither his name nor his home, his mind was inherently sharp, his intuition for certain matters naturally keen. All of it pointed to an extraordinary background.
“Hu Feng,” she called softly.
“Hmm?” he answered quietly.
“Just what kind of person do you think you are?” ℴ
A ripple suddenly disturbed the placid surface of his eyes, as if someone had tossed a pebble into the center of a calm lake, shattering its peace.
“I don’t know.”
She tilted her head, her smile growing even brighter. “Let me try and guess.”
He suddenly pulled the carriage to a halt on the mountain path. Turning to face her, he fixed her with a serious, intent gaze, his eyes glinting with a strange, inscrutable emotion.
“Go on,” he said.
She gave a light cough and looked away. ‘This man is too handsome. If I stare too long, I’ll get completely lost in thought.’
“I’d guess you’re a young master from a wealthy family, one no less prominent than Meng Nan’s. You seem cold and aloof on the surface, but you’re actually quick-witted and exceptionally intelligent. Your perspective is different from that of an ordinary person. That proves you weren’t just any rich young master. You might have even been a government official. And given your skill in martial arts, you were probably a military officer.”
Seeing that Hu Feng was listening intently without a hint of surprise on his face, she knew he must have already figured this much out himself. She continued, “I’ve asked around. Three years ago, when Uncle Hu found you, a war had just ended in the north. But by the time he picked you up, the campaign to pacify the border had been over for a full month. So, I suspect you were very likely a general on the winning side of that war. I just don’t know what could have caused you to be so severely injured.”
Hu Feng had considered all of this before. He just hadn’t expected that a young woman like Bai Zhi would be so good at connecting the dots.
Bai Zhi spoke again. “I see how anxious you are to regain your memories. Since you can already make a rough guess about who you are—even if you don’t know the specifics—all you have to do is go to the Capital City. Find the people who returned victorious from that battle to receive their titles. They would surely recognize you and help you find out who you are. Why haven’t you gone?”
Instead of answering, Hu Feng posed a question of his own. “Why do you think I haven’t gone?”
Bai Zhi grinned. “I wouldn’t dare say.”
Hu Feng scoffed, mimicking her. “You wouldn’t dare? Is there anything in this world you’re afraid of? Stop being mysterious. Spit it out!”
“Alright, I’ll really say it, then?” she asked, winking at him in an attempt to lighten the increasingly tense atmosphere.
“Go on,” he said with a nod, his expression impassive.
‘He already had an answer in mind, but he wanted to hear hers.’
‘He wanted to see if she was as clever as he imagined.’
Bai Zhi’s playful expression suddenly turned serious. “You’re so skilled in martial arts. Anyone who could injure you that badly three years ago must have been a formidable opponent. Or, there’s another possibility. Perhaps it was an acquaintance—someone who struck you down when your guard was completely down. You managed to escape with your life, but tragically, you lost your memories.”
“So, you don’t know who your enemy is. Even though you know you could find out who you are by going to the Capital City, you can’t do it yet.”
