Chapter 134: Chapter 126: The Doctor Has the Final Say
The room wasn’t large. Besides the bed, there was an old desk under the window. On it sat a pot, a bowl, and two books with tattered covers.
A wooden cabinet and two wooden stools stood in the corner, both neatly arranged. Though the room looked spartan, it was kept very clean and lacked the musty smell common to most houses.
"Seen enough? If so, let’s begin." Hu Feng sat in the chair at the desk.
Bai Zhi brought a stool over from the corner and sat across from him. She reached for his wrist to take his pulse.
He instinctively tried to pull his hand away, but the moment her soft, cool fingers touched his skin, the impulse vanished. He let her hold his hand, her palm supporting his wrist as she checked his pulse.
His pulse was steady, but it suddenly quickened the moment she touched him.
She glanced up at him with an amused, teasing look. "What’s this? Has a girl never held your hand before?"
His eyes flickered. Backlit as he was, the blush on his handsome face was hidden, but his embarrassment was palpable.
He quickly snatched his hand back and said gruffly, "If you’re here to treat me, then stick to it. Why are you bringing up irrelevant things?"
Bai Zhi chuckled softly and stood up, pulling the needle bag from her robes. "Turn around. I’m going to perform the acupuncture."
Hu Feng turned around as instructed, his gaze falling upon the pear tree outside the window. He had planted it himself three years ago, shortly after arriving at this home. Three years had passed, and the tree had never once blossomed, let alone borne fruit, but its leaves had always been lush and green.
’He wondered if his old memories would return on the day the pear tree finally bloomed and bore fruit.’
Her slender hand steadied his head as she quickly inserted one long, thin silver needle after another into several vital acupoints.
He felt no pain—in fact, he felt nothing at all. He still thought she hadn’t started the treatment by the time she began removing the needles.
"That’s it?" he asked.
She nodded, returning the needles to her needle bag. "All done."
"But I didn’t feel a thing." ’Even if there was no pain, I should have felt *something*, right? Is this treatment just a game to her?’
Bai Zhi tucked the needle bag away and looked up at Hu Feng’s doubtful expression. "I’ve told you before, the blood stasis in your head has been there for a long time. Dispersing it is no simple task. The reason you felt nothing is because I’m using the safest possible method for your treatment."
Hu Feng raised an eyebrow. "So what you’re saying is, there are other ways to treat me? Faster ways?"
Bai Zhi nodded. "Of course. For any illness, there are multiple treatment options. My job is to choose the one that causes the least harm and has the fewest side effects for the patient, not to simply pick the fastest one."
But Hu Feng pressed, "If we used the faster method, what are these ’harms and side effects’ you mentioned?"
Bai Zhi stared at his face, her gaze fixed on his deep, sea-like eyes. "No one can predict the exact consequences, Hu Feng. You must understand, your injury is in your head—the most important part of a person. It’s not something to be taken lightly, and we cannot afford even the slightest risk. The potential consequences are more than anyone could possibly bear."
"And what if I insist you use that method on me?"
Bai Zhi shook her head firmly. "Impossible. I refuse. I promised to treat you, and that means I am responsible for your well-being. I am the physician, and I know the best way to treat your condition."
