Chapter 125: Chapter 117: Seeking Fortune in Danger

"You said the doctors didn’t dare prescribe a strong enough dose?" Meng Nan asked. "Could it be that there’s a problem with administering a full dose of the antidote?"

"If the dosage is perfect, of course there won’t be an issue," Bai Zhi said. "The problem is mastering that dosage. That’s why I called them quacks. They clearly can’t get the amount right, so they can only use small doses. If they go over that amount, the antidote becomes a poison."

Meng Nan raised an eyebrow, his bright gaze fixed on Bai Zhi. There were still bluish-purple bruises on her small face that hadn’t faded. Her clear eyes shone brilliantly, and she seemed very self-assured. Her entire face radiated confidence.

The Jin guard’s recently smoothed brow furrowed again. "What did you say? If the dosage is wrong, the antidote becomes a poison? Isn’t that incredibly dangerous?"

Bai Zhi suddenly smiled, revealing a row of pearly white teeth. The small dimples on her cheeks were faintly visible.

"As they say, ’nothing ventured, nothing gained.’ If your master’s poison were so easy to cure, why hasn’t it been done already? How can you expect to taste the fruit of victory without taking a risk?"

The Jin guard was about to say more, but Meng Nan shot him a look, signaling him to keep quiet.

"Alright," Meng Nan said. "I trust you. I trust you won’t disappoint me."

Bai Zhi’s lips curled into a faint smile, and she said no more. To a doctor, a patient’s trust was more important than anything else.

She turned to glance at Hu Feng’s room. The door was still shut tight. ’Looks like he has no intention of helping me out,’ she thought.

There were two extra people for lunch today. ’If no one helps me, how long will it take to get this meal ready?’

Zhao Lan and Hu Changlin were in the courtyard, cleaning up the mess the Bai family had made. She couldn’t count on them.

So, Bai Zhi’s gaze fell upon the Jin guard. "Jin guard, could you do me a favor?"

Seeing her mischievous grin, the Jin guard instinctively shook his head. "I—"

But before he could get the refusal out, Meng Nan cut him off, nodding. "He has nothing else to do right now. Feel free to ask him for anything you need."

’What else could I say? He’d already opened his mouth, and he was my master.’

Bai Zhi chuckled. "Then I’ll have to trouble you, Jin guard."

In the kitchen, Bai Zhi washed and chopped vegetables. The ones she’d bought yesterday should have been enough for two meals, but now it looked like they would only last for this one.

The Jin guard was sweating buckets as he tended the fire. It was his first time in a kitchen, his first time sitting before a stove to feed the flames, and his first time being ordered around by a young girl...

It was already close to noon, too late to make dumplings. Instead, she whisked up a batter with some flour, beat in two eggs, mixed in some chopped scallions, and fried up a few egg crepes. There was still half a pot of corn and pork rib soup from yesterday, so she placed it on the small clay stove to heat up. Before long, the distinct, fragrant aroma of the soup began to fill the air.

The Jin guard took a deep sniff and quickly asked, "What is that smell?"

Bai Zhi was just placing the salt-cured fish into the hot, oiled wok. She pointed to the clay stove outside. "The corn and pork rib soup is heating up on the stove. If you’re hungry, you can have a bowl first."

The Jin guard was already starving; his stomach had rumbled more times than he could count. Smelling such a tempting aroma now, he couldn’t help but gulp.

"Don’t mind if I do." He shoved another piece of firewood into the stove, then quickly stood up and grabbed a bowl and spoon from the wooden rack by the cooktop.

When he lifted the lid off the pot, releasing a wave of rich aroma, he nearly passed out from the intoxicating scent.
