Chapter 229: Chapter 194: High School Reunion (2)

Jin Yihong was mulling over Professor Lin’s reply.

She convened the company’s core board members for a secret meeting.

She shared Professor Lin’s inside information, which sparked a round of discussion.

Professor Lin hadn’t revealed much, wishing to protect the scientist’s privacy.

The special team at the *Cell* editorial department was also conducting its review and verification in a closed, confidential process. Until the special issue was finally published, it would be impossible to find any information on the scientist.

All they knew was that this scientist was from Jin Country and was conducting research there.

His findings were set to be published in a special issue of *Cell*, but the exact date was still uncertain.

After a heated discussion, Jin Yihong and the board members ultimately designated "establishing a friendly relationship and securing priority cooperation with this scientist from Jin Country" as the company’s next top-priority project!

The entire project was classified as top secret. Not even her own daughter, Deng Feifei, had the clearance to know about it.

Of course, Jin Yihong didn’t fully trust Lin Ning’s words, so she hedged her bets.

She left half of her team behind to constantly monitor Professor Lin Ning’s movements, while she led the other half back to Jin Country. Her plan was to keep a close eye on *Cell* magazine and be the first to establish contact the moment the scientist’s identity was revealed.

The diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis B-related primary liver cancer... ’What a staggering market!’

...

...

Meanwhile, just before the *Cell* editorial department finished its review and prepared to publish the paper...

Wu Ting was leading his team in finalizing the data for the first stage of their research. Their paper was nearly ready.

Wu Ting had been in high spirits these past few days.

Just as Wu Ting was about to take a well-deserved break, he happened to get a message from his old high school class group chat.

The class monitor, Chai Ming, was organizing a high school reunion.

Wu Ting had attended Fan City First High School, the best high school in the city, so most of his former classmates had gone on to do quite well for themselves.

Back then, Wu Ting had been a below-average student. After the college entrance exams, he had only managed to get into an ordinary, second-rate Medical College.

As a result, his high school classmates remembered Wu Ting as a relatively unremarkable person.

And in fact, his subsequent job at City First Hospital was considered a poor career choice compared to what his other classmates had achieved.

Fan City is adjacent to Xiao City and Xianglin City, so most of the top students from Fan City First High School ended up working in one of those two larger cities.

Those who stayed in Fan City were either developing their careers at an average pace, had taken government jobs, or had families with local connections.

Wu Ting had a relaxed attitude about this kind of reunion. He had a few good friends back in high school, and they had kept in touch over the years. That, combined with the class monitor’s earnest invitation, was enough for him to agree to go.

On Saturday, Wu Ting followed the directions from the group chat and arrived at the banquet hall a little early.

They were, after all, graduates of Fan City First High School. The class had plenty of people who were either highly successful or came from wealthy families, so the venue was a very nice hotel.

When Wu Ting got to the private room, quite a few people were already there.

The class monitor, Chai Ming, spotted Wu Ting and immediately waved him over to sit down.

Everyone remembered Wu Ting clearly because he was so good-looking, but since his grades and family background were average, nobody paid him much special attention.

They gave him a simple welcome, and then everyone went back to their small talk about work, relationships, and the like.

"Wu Ting, I hear you’re working at City First Hospital now."

Wu Ting had just come for a casual meal and to see old classmates, so he kept a low profile. Besides, no one would understand if he started talking about his specialized field.

"Yeah, I just finished my probation. I’m a resident physician now, just a doctor in the emergency department at City First Hospital. Low pay, long hours. Can’t compare to you all."

Wu Ting said self-deprecatingly, not wanting to talk more about his job.

Everyone knew what the prospects were for a junior doctor at City First Hospital.

Medicine is a career that pays off late in life, and you need connections, a high-level degree, or exceptional talent to climb the ladder. Everyone knew that Wu Ting, with his second-rate undergraduate degree, was already lucky just to have secured a permanent position.

Most likely, he would remain a resident physician for the rest of his career.

Since Wu Ting was being so humble, everyone was considerate enough to maintain a polite and tactful front.

So, they just gave a noncommittal "Oh," and didn’t press him any further about his job.

The conversation shifted back to funny stories from their school days and the popular figures from their year.

Wu Ting, having been utterly unremarkable in high school, just sat and listened quietly. Some of the stories did make him feel a pang of nostalgia.

The general atmosphere was one of nostalgia. Wu Ting chatted with a few of the friends he used to hang out with, and the mood was light and pleasant.

After a short while, another classmate arrived.

It was Huang Jiabing. His grades in high school had been even worse than Wu Ting’s, but the man had been lucky enough to be born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

He was now working in construction under his uncle and was already the deputy manager of a construction company in Fan City.

He had ridden the real estate boom, made a fortune, and was now worth tens of millions.

He swaggered in, putting on a big show. His line of work in construction had also made him seem rather greasy and uncouth.
