Chapter 706: Chapter 698: Marrying a Rich Man (Part 1)
"Mom, our family isn’t as well-off as we used to be. You don’t have to get all dressed up every day. Even if you make yourself look stunning, there’s no one to see it." Eleanor Bishop’s head throbbed as she listened.
Yara Ross’s face turned ashen, and her eyes reddened. She snapped, "Eleanor Bishop, is that any way to talk to your mother? You can’t even earn enough money, and now you have the nerve to look down on me?"
"I’m not looking down on you. I just don’t want the money I earn every day to be wasted on useless things." ’If it weren’t for her spendthrift habits,’ she thought, ’we wouldn’t be in a position where, after all my years of working, we can’t even scrape together a single month’s living expenses.’
"And you say you’re not looking down on me! Eleanor Bishop, do you think I *want* to spend your money? If I didn’t have to stay home and take care of your father, I wouldn’t be trapped here day after day."
Seeing her mother getting emotional, Eleanor Bishop picked up the groceries and headed for the kitchen, deciding not to argue any further. She knew she could never win an argument with her mother.
However, while Eleanor Bishop was ready to drop it, Yara Ross was not. She followed Eleanor into the kitchen, crying. "Do you think I have it easy? All these years, your father just lies there without saying a single word. It’s like I’m watching over a corpse every day. Do you think I enjoy this?"
At Yara Ross’s words, Eleanor Bishop stiffened. Her grip on the grocery bags tightened. With red-rimmed eyes, she spun around angrily. "My dad is not a corpse! He just can’t move right now."
"Right now? This ’right now’ has lasted for eight whole years! Eleanor Bishop, how many more eight-year spans do you think I have left to live?"
A look of shock flashed in Eleanor Bishop’s eyes, and her lips trembled. "Mom, how can you say that?"
"I’ve had enough of this miserable life!" Yara Ross sobbed, throwing her hands up in despair.
Eleanor Bishop’s face was ashen. "Mom," she asked in a low, unsettled voice, "do you even know what you’re saying?"
"I know exactly what I’m saying. Eleanor Bishop, you have two choices. One, you listen to me and go on the blind dates. Two, your father and I get a divorce. Either way, I’m not going to live like this anymore. If this goes on, I’m going to lose my mind."
"Heh... Mom, you’re really threatening your own daughter with divorcing Dad." ’She couldn’t believe those words were coming from her mother. After all, she had seen with her own eyes how much her parents had loved each other. And now, her mother wanted to divorce her father.’
"Eno, I don’t have many eight-year spans left in my life. And neither do you. Please, just listen to your mother."
Eleanor Bishop suppressed a wave of emotion. A faint, bitter smile touched her lips as she said flatly, "Fine. I’ll do it. I’ll go on the blind dates, as long as you promise to stay by Dad’s side and not leave him." ’She could endure anything, but she couldn’t let her father be hurt.’
’She couldn’t bear to imagine her father waking up one day only to discover that his wife had divorced him. The shock would be more than he could handle.’
"Eno, I knew you were a good daughter. As long as you marry someone rich and we can go back to living a comfortable life, of course I won’t leave."
Eleanor Bishop let out a bitter laugh. "I understand."
