Chapter 475: 475 | Resonance Event

Aurora moved first, because Aurora always moved first, and she rolled off the couch onto her knees on the carpet like she’d rehearsed it. Addison came off the other couch a half-second later and landed in a crouch that had actual combat mechanics behind it, and for one glorious moment I thought they were going to fight each other on Aurora’s rug.

"Rules," Belle said from the stool, notebook in hand.

"There are no rules," Addison said.

"There are always rules. That’s what separates us from Ruby house." Belle tapped her pen against the bracket. "One round each. He stays in the chair. Hands on the armrests."

I looked at her. "Hands on the armrests."

"Hands on the armrests." Her amber eyes did not blink. "Otherwise you’ll take over and we won’t learn anything. The whole point is data collection."

"You want to collect data."

"I want to know who wins." Belle’s mouth twitched. "The data is a bonus."

Naomi had pulled a throw pillow into her lap and was hugging it against her chest like a shield, but she wasn’t looking away and she wasn’t leaving. Her pink eyes tracked between Aurora and Addison and me, and her thumb had found the shell necklace at her throat, working the little spiral of it back and forth.

That was the tell. That was always the tell. Something had shifted in her since the gate, since she carried me out of a collapsing dimension while I bled through her hands, and whatever careful line she used to draw around herself had gotten burned away somewhere in that forest.

Then the System did something it had never done before.

The notification came in gold instead of purple, which was a color I’d only seen twice, and both times it had involved me nearly dying or Vale deciding my life was interesting.

RESONANCE EVENT DETECTED

Four bonded targets in proximity. Field density: 340% baseline.

QUEST ISSUED: Four Rings, One Field

Objective: Achieve full resonance coupling with all four bonded targets in a single continuous session.

Requirements: Each target must reach three peaks. Session may not break for more than 30 minutes.

Reward: Permanent field stabilization. Divine Overflow cost reduced by 40%.

Bonus: Essence Vault capacity +6. Lifespan gain multiplier 2x for session duration.

Failure penalty: None. Field remains unstable.

ACCEPT? YES / NO

I read it twice.

I read it three times.

My brain kept trying to reject the words like they were written in a language I didn’t speak, which was probably a defense mechanism, because the System had just asked me to orchestrate a four-woman marathon and was calling it a quest.

The forty percent reduction on Divine Overflow sat at the center of everything. That meant the golden fire eating through my lifespan would slow from ten seconds per day to six hours. Three minutes of borrowed godhood stretching to five. The next time something crawled out of a fracture with joints in places that made geometry weep, I’d have options that didn’t end with me bleeding out in someone’s arms.

The old geezer built his machine to feed on intimacy. Now it wanted me to prove I understood the lesson by servicing four women back-to-back without a smoke break.

"You’ve got the face again," Addison said.

"What face."

"The face where something in your head just told you something and you’re deciding whether to tell us." She pulled the lollipop out of her mouth and pointed the wet stick at me. "You do it constantly. It’s insufferable."

I could lie. I’d built a career on lying, in this life and the last one, and every single one of them would have believed some version of nothing, I’m fine, just tired.

But Yumi’s crystal plate sat in the back of my skull with its seven concentric rings, and the outermost one had flickered because Blair hadn’t decided what she felt yet, and the reason the other six burned steady was because I’d stopped running the con on them somewhere around week four.

"My ability just gave me a task," I said.

The room went very quiet.

Belle’s pen stopped. Naomi’s fingers went still on her necklace. Aurora, still on her knees on the carpet, tilted her head, and Addison’s whole body language changed from predatory to interested.

"A task," Belle repeated.

I leaned back and let my head hit the chair. "It’s for all four of you."

"Read it," Aurora said.

"You can’t see it."

"Read it out loud, dumbass."

So I did. All of it, including the part about three peaks each and the thirty-minute rule and the two times lifespan multiplier, and I watched four different reactions land at four different speeds.

Belle got there first, because Belle always got there first when there were numbers involved. "Forty percent off the golden thing."

"Yeah."

"The thing that cost you eleven days in the gate." She was already writing. "Forty percent off means that same fight costs you six and a half. Which means you could have used it twice."

"Or once for twice as long."

"Or once for twice as long." Her pen dug into the page hard enough to tear. She looked up and her eyes had that specific hardness they got when she’d stopped pretending to be casual. "Then we’re doing it."

"Belle."

"Don’t." She set the notebook down. "You died on that stretcher twice. I watched them restart your heart in the back of a transport while a medic I’d never met told me to get out of the way. Twice, Jace." Her voice didn’t crack, because Belle Fox did not crack in rooms with people in them, but it went flat and low and that was worse. "So if the universe is handing you a discount on the thing that keeps you alive, we’re not sitting here debating it like it’s a chip flavor."

Nobody said anything for a second.

Then Addison stood up, brushed carpet lint off her jeans, and cracked her neck. "Well, that escalated quickly."
