15 – Chris’ surprise
Although the Elite class had few people compared to the rest of the school, the number of students was normal compared to other classes. While people who were in a class had to stay in a room with 40 other people, the Elite class also had 40 students. The difference was that these 40 people were Awakened in the Elite class, and compared to the more than 2 thousand students at school, it made the students in this class feel that they were very special – something that inflated their egos.
As much as Leo was a 2 Star Bronze Awakened, he didn’t let the Awakened special status influence his mindset to make him become arrogant, so much so that Leo always treated everyone who was polite to him with the same amount of politeness. This was mainly influenced by his sister, who was a Gold Awakened but was always polite to everyone she spoke to, from another Gold Awakened to a waitress at a family restaurant.
As Leo was leaving the classroom and heading towards the school Arena while talking to Liza, Chris also came alongside him and every now and then contributed something to the conversation. For Leo this came naturally, but Liza was surprised that Chris was also treating her normally as Leo did, despite Chris’ evident shyness. Unlike other students who only saw her as intimidating, or with ulterior motives, Leo and Chris just enjoyed the conversation as if they were three normal students before they became Awakened.
But while the three chatted happily, there were some people who were a little jealous to see the three of them talking, especially Frederick Mills, the kid who got into trouble after the fight with Leo. The day before after class, Professor Edward called Frederick’s father to the school, and even though Frederick’s father was a Silver 1 Star Awakened, in front of Professor Edward, who was Silver 3 Stars, the difference in rank and force was too great. Fortunately as this was the first time the teachers had caught Frederick doing something like this, Professor Edward left Frederick with only a verbal warning after his father assured him that he would correct his son’s attitude. Because of all this, Frederick’s father severely reprimanded his son, but not because he had gotten into a fight with another student, but because he did it so openly in front of so many people.
(O)ᴠʟ With that, Frederick decided to wait for another time where he would have a better opportunity to do something to Leo without him being seen doing something “wrong”. And luckily for him, today there would be a tournament among the students for points for the entrance exam.
‘If I can disqualify this boy, that will be even better revenge since he won’t be able to enter any powerful university in the future,’ Frederick thought excitedly, and started to ball up a plan with his friends.
Meanwhile, Leo and Liza were quite relaxed, as they knew that no one would have the strength to deal with them at school based on their Rank, but Chris on the other hand was worried.
“Dude, don’t worry. You have a powerful Quirk. As long as you use it well, you’re guaranteed a spot in the top five,” Leo said with a small smile.-(0)ᴠʟ.
“But… I’ve never fought against anyone else before…” Chris said, still without confidence.
Leo thought for a moment and replied, “But who said you need to fight?”
Chris was confused when he heard what Leo said, but after some thought he finally got it! With the idea Leo just gave him, Chris was much more confident in this battle.
When all the students arrived at the school’s arena, Professor Edward said aloud, “The matchups have already been decided by the program provided by the four main universities. According to their regulations, all weapons used will be standard weapons used in training to ensure equality and fairness in battles.”
Leo heard this and felt it was a good thing. After all, if a student used a Bronze 5 Star sword because they had a lot of money, that sword would definitely cut another student’s Bronze 1 Star sword in half. Unlike a Bronze 3 Star Bow, which was much heavier and needed more force to shoot arrows than Bronze 1 Star Bows, swords had no strength limitation for use beyond the greater weight.
The first battle didn’t involve any of the trio, so Leo just stood in the stands with Liza and Chris watching how this would work out. Since this was Leo and Chris’ first time, Liza patiently explained how this arena worked.
“This type of arena is very modern, something that only the Blue Pearl school has in the city. The arena is connected to a computer that can control the arena’s environment, the temperature, and even project some semi-solid objects to interfere with the movement and vision of whoever is battling,” she explained, and Leo was a little surprised by what all Liza had told them.
As the battle began, they saw that the arena’s environment changed from a smooth circle to a destroyed city. Professor Edward had warned that the environments would also be random to prevent it from favoring one student over another, thus making the environment impartial. (O)ᴠʟ
Leo was happy to see this, as one of his concerns was that [Wall-Hack] would be useless in an arena without obstacles. But as long as he was lucky not to get an arena in a desert or some other predominantly flatland environment, the skill would still be useful to give him an edge. On the other hand, Chris was thinking about how he could handle the students who were struggling. As he had no fighting experience, he would have to come up with some creative plan to deal with his opponents.
The two students who were up first were using swords. While one student’s sword was slightly reddened, probably from a Quirk that increased the temperature of the weapon, the other student was walking on the wall to change the angle of his attacks.
As much as the first student’s Quirk made his sword much more lethal than his opponent’s, the second student had very good battle experience and was able to dodge the first student’s attacks with great ease because of the three-dimensional mobility he had control over. It didn’t take long for the hot sword student to lose and the second student’s victory to be announced.
The second student had managed to breach the first student’s defense, and slammed his sword into the first student’s shoulder. Because the sword wasn’t sharp enough, the first student’s shoulder only received a small cut, which could easily be treated in the school’s infirmary. Leo was very appreciative of how this student won the battle. It looks like he had trained with the sword for a few years to be able to move so well using the floor and walls.
Soon the second battle was announced, and to the surprise of the trio, the name on the screen was familiar.
[Peter Pattinson vs Chris Elliot]
“Damn…” Chris muttered. He wanted to observe some more battles before going to fight the first time, but he didn’t have a chance.
“Come on man. Even if you lose, from what the teacher said, this won’t be the only tournament. Think of it as an experience, but know that you have the ability to win this battle,” Leo said with a smile.
“Good luck Chris,” Liza said with an encouraging smile of her own.
Chris came down from the stands and went to the arena. The field had a radius of 25 meters, that is, from one end to the other it was 50 meters. Each competitor stood 50 meters apart. Chris’ Quirk was teleportation, but unlike Leo, whose abilities were passive, because Chris’ ability was active, he needed to spend Mana to use it. The further he would try to jump, the more mana it took. Yesterday he had tested the skill at home and found that he could teleport up to a maximum of 40 meters safely, and if he teleported that distance, 90% of his mana would be spent and he would need just under one hour to recover everything.
Since early in the morning he had teleported 30 meters to surprise Leo, much of his mana was spent. Fortunately, enough time had gone by for him to recover everything, but as he would have to have other battles in a short time, he couldn’t spend all his mana in the first battle. Leo had given Chris an idea, and Chris was determined to use it, but for it to work he would need to be very close to his opponent. Luckily Liza had also told Chris what Peter’s Quirk did, which already gave him an advantage. At the entrance to the arena Chris took a dagger and waited for the match to start.
“Start!” Professor Edward said over the arena’s loudspeakers, announcing the beginning of the confrontation. The setting was set to the top of a frozen mountain. Snow covered the ground, while cold winds made Chris shiver.
‘This arena is very realistic… but this scenario gives me a big advantage,’ Chris thought excitedly.
Peter, on the other side of the arena, also smiled to see that he would have no obstacles in order to get to Chris.
With a confident smile, Peter picked up his sword and nonchalantly ran to Chris. Because he was already used to fighting monsters and working out at the gym every day, Peter reached a very fast speed, and with his Quirk, he wasn’t afraid at all, even more so when Peter saw that Chris was standing in the same place, apparently scared. Peter became even more self sure and increased his speed.
When the distance between the two was less than 5 meters, Chris finally smiled and suddenly disappeared from Peter’s vision. Peter finally activated his Quirk. It was like a sixth sense, allowing him to sense if something dangerous was going to happen, and when Chris smiled, Peter’s Quirk activated. But unfortunately it was too late for Peter to do anything; Chris’ speed was faster than Peter’s reaction time, and considering Peter didn’t know what Chris was going to do, it only made this kid’s situation worse. It took Chris one second to disappear from Peter’s vision, and another second to appear behind the guy’s back.
When Chris appeared behind Peter, instead of using his dagger to stab Peter, Chris just used his other free hand and pushed Peter, who was still sprinting forward, right off the mountain.
Peter didn’t fall, as the arena was flat, and the underside of the mountain was just a holographic illusion, but as soon as his foot touched the empty space outside the mountain, the illusion was undone and he was disqualified for leaving the arena.
“Winner: Chris Elliot,” Professor Edward announced over the arena’s loudspeakers, which surprised everyone.
“He used a Space Quirk?!”
“He teleported!”
“My god, he’s so lucky!”
The students were shocked by Chris’ Quirk, as a Space Quirk was practically a guaranteed pass to Military University, which was every student’s dream! Envious looks were directed at Chris, even more so after they saw that Chris had returned to Liza and Leo’s side with a happy smile on his face.
Even Liza and Professor Edward were shocked by Chris’ Quirk, as they too knew the implications a Quirk like that would have. Only Leo was calm after seeing Chris use his Quirk, as he already knew what his friend’s Quirk was, but that didn’t lessen Leo’s happiness at seeing his friend come back victorious.
“Well done, bro,” Leo laughed, before punching Chris in the shoulder.
After a few seconds, another announcement came.
[Frederick Mills vs. Leonardo Lentz]
Upon seeing the announcement, the two students in question smiled.
Frederick was happy that he could finally get revenge, while Leo was also a little happy about it as well. He had become ticked off by Frederick for using his Quirk against him yesterday, but when Professor Edward interfered, Leo couldn’t do anything.
‘It’s time to teach this boy good manners,’ Leo thought with a smile as he entered the arena.
Initially Leo intended to end all of his battles quickly, but against Frederick, Leo decided to have some fun before ending the battle.
