Divine Emperor Demon Emperor
Chapter 627: Playing Hard to Get
Chapter 627: Chapter 627: Playing Hard to Get
Without wasting a moment, Lin Yun went to the huge iron cages and easily severed the chains that bound them with his Demon Bone Heaven-Dominating Spear.
"Quick, run! Get back to Demon City!" he told the people from the Demon Palace. Having escaped with their lives, they all thanked Lin Yun one by one. Some of the Demon Palace Warriors even wanted to stay and fight by his side.
He refused, simply urging them to flee as quickly as possible. Returning to Demon City was what mattered most.
Lin Yun had just freed the captive Demon Palace members. As they scattered in all directions, Divine Palace Warriors arrived on the scene—many more than before, a force of over two hundred.
"Get them!" the leading Divine Palace Warrior bellowed, his eyes fixed on the Demon Palace members Lin Yun had just freed.
At once, more than a hundred Divine Palace Warriors gave chase to the fleeing Demon Palace members, while the remaining hundred surrounded Lin Yun.
Just like before, Lin Yun fought as he retreated, conserving his Elemental Power as much as possible.
Meanwhile, in Divine Celestial City, Qing Zhu also saw the smoke signals rising from Lin Yun’s position. At first, it was only black smoke, and Qing Zhu wondered, ’Could this be a feint? A trick orchestrated by Lin Yun?’
"Qing Zhu Commander, should we set out at once? We can coordinate from both inside and out to annihilate the Demon Palace members," the Grand Commander of the Divine Palace asked from behind her.
"Let’s wait." She didn’t rush to a decision. Just as Lin Yun had anticipated, Qing Zhu was an exceptionally cautious person.
She still harbored suspicions that this was just a feint orchestrated by Lin Yun. If she rashly dispatched the Divine Palace’s elite forces to provide support, they could very well be walking into a trap.
Standing at the entrance of the great hall in Divine Celestial City, Qing Zhu gazed at the black smoke continuously rising outside the city, yet she still withheld her order.
The Grand Commander of the Divine Palace, Song Tianyang, Wei Yunhang, and Lin Jianhong stood behind Qing Zhu. Though the Grand Commander was anxious, he didn’t dare rush her.
As for Song Tianyang and the other two, they appeared quite relaxed.
After a wait of about fifteen minutes, the color of the smoke changed. The black plumes turned red. Seeing this, a faint smile touched Qing Zhu’s lips, and she said softly,
"Grand Commander, lead the twelve Commanders of the Divine Palace and head out as reinforcements at once. You must annihilate every last person from the Demon Palace."
Upon hearing Qing Zhu’s command, the Grand Commander gave a respectful acknowledgment and quickly departed. After he left, Qing Zhu turned to face Wei Yunhang, Song Tianyang, and Lin Jianhong.
The moment she turned, a look of adoration was clearly visible in the eyes of all three men as they looked at her. It was apparent that they had all developed feelings for her.
"You three may go as well. Bring Lin Yun and the others back to me. Remember, I want Lin Yun alive," Qing Zhu said.
By using himself and his companions as bait, Lin Yun had successfully gotten Qing Zhu to take the hook. As he fought and retreated through the city, Lin Yun estimated that the Divine Palace’s elite forces should arrive by dawn. In other words, he and his group had to retreat before daybreak.
Fighting and retreating, Lin Yun saw many of the Demon Palace members he had freed being cut down again by the Divine Palace Warriors.
Right now, Lin Yun had no energy to spare for them. He had rescued them; whether they could escape with their lives was now up to their own luck. This was something Lin Yun had known from the beginning.
More and more people were chasing Lin Yun. As the battle raged on, the Divine Palace Warriors gradually realized that the "attack" on the city consisted of only Lin Yun and a few others. In their eyes, Lin Yun’s group must have come to rescue the captured members of the Demon Palace.
The unsuspecting Divine Palace Warriors had no idea this was all part of a plan conceived by Lin Yun and his companions.
This was not meant to be a short battle. Earlier in the day, Lin Yun had told the Monk and the others that they had to wait for all the fish to be on the hook before they could retreat.
In other words, Lin Yun and his group could only retreat once they had lured the Divine Palace’s elites nearby. They had to hold out inside the city for at least three hours before they could withdraw.
It was like they were running in circles. Lin Yun had already killed no fewer than a hundred Divine Palace Warriors, yet the number of his pursuers only continued to grow.
Ducking and weaving through the city with hundreds in pursuit, Lin Yun had no intention of retreating. It wasn’t time yet.
Like Lin Yun, the Monk and Daoist, along with Xi Zijin, were also dodging pursuers within the city. The Monk was probably in the most pitiful state of all. With his already portly frame, the prolonged chase had left him completely winded and gasping for air.
"HUFF... PUFF... HUFF..." Hiding in a civilian’s house, the Monk gasped for breath. It wasn’t that he had consumed much of his Elemental Power, but that his physical stamina was draining far too quickly.
Inside the house was a young woman of the Divine Palace. Seeing the Monk, she was initially a little afraid, but when it became clear he meant her no harm, the young woman gradually calmed down.
He gave the young woman a passing glance. She was quite pretty, but the Monk couldn’t be bothered with such things at a time like this. ’First, I’ll hide. I’ll figure out the rest later.’
"Damn it all," he muttered under his breath. "Playing the decoy is a terrible job. It’s wearing this Lord Buddha out."
Seeing the Monk sit down on a chair in the room, the young woman slowly approached him. Looking somewhat frightened, she asked, "Are you going to kill me?"
Hearing the young woman’s words, the Monk replied bluntly, "Why would I kill you? This Monk never kills women."
"Oh," the young woman responded softly. However, in the very next second, she whipped her right hand out from behind her back, revealing a dagger that she thrust violently toward the Monk.
It all happened in an instant. He dodged her attack by a hair’s breadth. The young woman only had the Cultivation of the Primordial Ocean Realm; after dodging her strike, the Monk easily subdued her.
"You little vixen!" the Monk said, exasperated. "Your Lord Buddha had no intention of harming you, yet you actually tried to kill me."
Hearing his words, the young woman shouted coldly, "Bah! Demon Palace trash! As a member of the Divine Palace, the conflict between us is to the death."
"Heh, so you’re not afraid of death, are you?" The Monk, already incensed by the sneak attack, felt his anger boil over at her curses.
However, the young woman, pinned by the Monk, suddenly screamed at the top of her lungs, "Help! A Demon Palace member is here...!"
Hearing her scream, the Monk knocked her unconscious without a second thought. Just then, the Divine Palace Warriors who had been searching for him heard the shout and quickly arrived outside the house.
The Monk burst out of the house and took off running again. Behind him, dozens of Divine Palace Warriors gave relentless chase, shouting curses as they ran.
"Stop running, you fat bastard! If you’ve got any guts, stay and fight for three hundred rounds!"
"Baldy! What kind of skill is running away? Come and fight me if you’ve got the nerve!"
