Chapter 610: Chapter 610: Heaven-Sent People

The leader of the Demon Palace turned to the leader of the Divine Palace and roared furiously, "Aren’t you from the Divine Palace a little too despicable?"

The Divine Palace leader didn’t even bother to reply. His eyes, glinting with murderous intent, were fixed on Lin Yun. He hadn’t expected Lin Yun to neutralize his sneak attack so easily.

The Divine Palace leader stared at Lin Yun, who stared right back, a cold smile playing on his lips. "This is why I didn’t choose the Divine Palace," Lin Yun said. "Because of your hypocrisy."

Lin Yun was telling the truth. He hadn’t chosen the Divine Palace precisely because he had seen through its leader’s hypocrisy. On the surface, the Divine Palace leader seemed gentler and more righteous.

He wasn’t like the leader of the Demon Palace, who made no effort to conceal his murderous aura. But Lin Yun, with his exceptionally keen observation, had seen the hypocritical face beneath the Divine Palace leader’s gentle facade.

Besides, Lin Yun never had a good impression of the Divine Realm to begin with. And so, he chose the Demon Palace.

His sneak attack having failed, the Divine Palace leader gave Lin Yun a long, hard look, then said to the members of the Divine Palace behind him, "Let’s go."

Qing Zhu and the others left along with the Divine Palace contingent. Only after watching them depart did Lin Yun and his group follow the people from the Demon Palace.

On the road, Lin Yun learned the name of the Demon Palace leader: Zhang Qing. He was one of the Ten Commanders of the Demon Palace. However, Zhang Qing was ranked last among them, and his strength and Cultivation were also the weakest.

During their conversation, Lin Yun introduced himself, the Monk, and the others to Zhang Qing one by one. But when he got to Little Ape, a look of shock—no, utter astonishment—appeared on Zhang Qing’s face.

After only a few moments, however, Zhang Qing shook his head and thought to himself, ’It can’t be that ridiculous, can it? This fist-sized Little Demon Beast couldn’t possibly be that heaven-defying existence. It probably just looks similar.’

Lin Yun had no idea what Zhang Qing was thinking. After they had traveled for some time, Lin Yun began to ask about this new world.

However, Zhang Qing didn’t offer any detailed explanations. He simply told Lin Yun that the Grand Commander would explain everything once they arrived at Demon City.

Since Zhang Qing wouldn’t elaborate, Lin Yun didn’t press him. ’I’m already here, after all. I’ll figure things out eventually.’ Then, Lin Yun asked about the "Heavenly Descenders."

On the topic of the Heavenly Descenders, Zhang Qing was forthcoming, explaining it in detail to Lin Yun and his companions. When he finished, he added with a self-deprecating smile, "Of course, these are just stories passed down from our ancestors. To this day, no one has ever seen a true Heavenly Descender."

After hearing Zhang Qing’s explanation, Lin Yun and the others finally understood what "Heavenly Descenders" meant. They were outsiders from the legends, people who could help change the power structure of this world.

However, this was merely a legend within the Demon Palace; no one had ever seen a Heavenly Descender with their own eyes. But the legend stated that whoever gained the allegiance of a Heavenly Descender could change the state of the world and end the struggle between the Divine Palace and the Demon Palace.

"Heh, so does that mean we’re the Heavenly Descenders?" the Monk and Daoist chimed in, joking idly upon hearing Zhang Qing’s words.

They walked for the entire day. Since the Demon Palace group was so large, Lin Yun didn’t ride his Black-striped Tiger. As night fell, the group found an open area to rest for the night.

They lit a bonfire, and Lin Yun’s group sat around it with Zhang Qing. The other members of the Demon Palace sat in small groups of two and three, occasionally glancing over at Lin Yun’s party and whispering amongst themselves.

Through the day’s casual conversation, Lin Yun had learned a few things about this world. For instance, Demon Beasts did not exist here.

That was why the people from the Demon Palace were so interested in Little Ape and the Black-striped Tiger. Even Zhang Qing found himself sizing up the Black-striped Tiger from time to time. As for Little Ape, Zhang Qing had observed it even more closely.

Sitting by the bonfire, the Monk and the Daoist took several jars of fine wine from their Space Rings. When Zhang Qing saw them conjure the large jars from thin air as if by magic, his eyes nearly popped out of his head.

"What... Am I seeing things?" he muttered, staring intently at their hands. There was nowhere on their person to hide anything, let alone several large wine jars. Zhang Qing looked as though he had seen a ghost.

At this, Lin Yun and his companions exchanged a knowing smile. They were all aware that Space Rings didn’t exist in this world. They had no intention of explaining, either; it would be too much trouble. ’Besides, as long as there’s wine, who cares how it got here?’

"Here, Brother Zhang Qing, have a taste. This is our special brew," Lin Yun said with a smile, pouring a bowl for Zhang Qing and handing it to him.

The Monk and the Daoist didn’t hold back, sharing the wine not only with Zhang Qing but with all the other Demon Palace members. If one were to ask what the Monk and the Daoist had the most of in their Space Rings, besides Primordial Stones, it would have to be wine.

Zhang Qing took a gulp of the wine Lin Yun offered. As it went down, his eyes lit up and he praised it loudly, "Excellent! This is much better than the wine we have in the Demon Palace! Another bowl!"

Hearing this, Lin Yun smiled and had the Monk pour another bowl for Zhang Qing. After their brief time together, Lin Yun could tell that Zhang Qing was a very straightforward person. He had no hidden agendas; he wore his heart on his sleeve.

Everyone drank merrily. Perhaps because they had never tasted such fine wine before, the Demon Palace members had very low alcohol tolerance. After just a few bowls, many of them were already passed out drunk.

Even Zhang Qing was starting to get drunk. His face flushed red as he looked at Lin Yun’s group and began to speak, his words slurring.

"If you really are the Heavenly Descenders, that would be wonderful... The power gap between the Divine Palace and the Demon Palace... it’s getting wider and wider. If this keeps up, I’m afraid it won’t be long before the Demon Palace is completely wiped out... Those bastards from the Divine Palace, every last one of them is a treacherous snake... they only know how to use their dirty tricks..."

Zhang Qing was drunk. From his slurred words, Lin Yun and the others could tell that the Demon Palace’s situation was likely already precarious. That must have been why Zhang Qing was willing to kill them rather than let the Divine Palace have them.

Because if Lin Yun and his companions really were the Heavenly Descenders, the Demon Palace would truly have no chance of victory if the Divine Palace got to them first. Fortunately, Lin Yun had chosen the Demon Palace.

Completely drunk, Zhang Qing collapsed next to Lin Yun and began snoring loudly. It was then that Xi Zijin, who had been quiet the whole time, looked at Lin Yun and spoke.

"You certainly have a knack for picking sides," she said. "Ignoring the strong to choose the weak."

Hearing her words, Lin Yun smiled faintly. He could tell she wasn’t blaming him. He chuckled and replied.

"Don’t you think it’s more satisfying to help the weak overcome the strong? I’ve seen enough of the powerful bullying the helpless. Sometimes, an underdog victory from the brink of defeat makes for a good story."

Hearing this, the ever-serious Xi Zijin actually broke into a faint smile. And when she smiled, she was truly beautiful.
