Diary of a Criminal Investigator
Chapter 1045 Murder Process
Wang Zhaokai could clearly feel the regret in Gao Feng’s words.
According to Gao Feng, the relationship between him and Zhao Xiaowan was just mutual consolation and satisfaction.
There was no real affection between the two, let alone any liking or love.
"At that time, we were working in the mooncake factory, busy during the day, and at night young men and women all gathered together, of course, things would happen."
It wasn’t just the mooncake factory; in other densely populated factories, this situation was quite common.
It had nothing to do with age; regardless of age or appearance, this situation existed.
After all, without special circumstances when going out for work, it’s likely just for about a year.
Factory work pays little, and many times both physical and psychological care from the opposite sex is needed.
In such cases, if there’s no other way, the only thing is to find a solution between each other.
"I originally wanted Zhao Xiaowan to continue working at the mooncake factory; this way, while working, we could be together, and when returning home for the New Year, each of us could go to our own families without interfering with each other."
What Gao Feng didn’t say was that being with Zhao Xiaowan provided both psychological and physical satisfaction without spending too much money.
Why not?
Sometimes Zhao Xiaowan would even buy him things, and even when renting a place, rent was split in half.
Gao Feng asked for another cigarette, seeming not to have a heavy addiction as he coughed after a few puffs, yet he constantly wanted to smoke.
"On the afternoon of June 25th, I brought Zhao Xiaowan from Dongjiang Province to Haizhou City and stayed with her in the lodging we used to rent."
Having not seen Zhao Xiaowan for nearly half a year, Gao Feng greatly missed her. He had also been working at the parade ground for some time without finding a suitable replacement.
Therefore, that night, Gao Feng thought of having relations with Zhao Xiaowan.
It could be said they were like dry tinder catching fire at the slightest spark that night.
"Before starting, Zhao Xiaowan told me she came to Haizhou City to elope with me."
The lingering smoke shrouded Gao Feng’s expression, as if he was recalling, as if he was regretting.
"At first, I agreed with her because if I didn’t, she wouldn’t go to bed with me. But after it was over, when she brought it up again, I certainly couldn’t agree, and as a result, we argued."
According to Gao Feng, their argument was intense that night, and though they ended up in bed, neither spoke throughout the night.
The next morning, Gao Feng initially wanted Zhao Xiaowan to continue working at the mooncake factory, but she refused.
Gao Feng continued narrating.
"Before getting off work the next day, she called me back. I thought she had figured it out and wanted me to take her to the mooncake factory. Unexpectedly, she repeatedly asked when I would leave with her."
Gao Feng naturally couldn’t, for Zhao Xiaowan, abandon his wife and children and leave his parents behind to elope with her.
"She was too naive, thinking too little. We didn’t have much money; if we really eloped, where could we go? Life would be the same, still working everywhere, what difference would it make."
However, Gao Feng knew he couldn’t continue like this; otherwise, if Zhao Xiaowan really found his hometown, everything would be over.
"Around 5 p.m. on June 26th, I lied about eloping with Zhao Xiaowan, but I actually intended to send her back to Dongjiang Province."
However, midway, Zhao Xiaowan realized that Gao Feng’s destination wasn’t to elope but to head to Dongjiang.
"If you have a photo or video in the hospital, you can see, when we reached Nangang Village, he went to use the toilet and suddenly ran off. I chased him to the eastern edge of Nangang Village, near a pond."
Gao Feng began describing the murder process.
"He was simply unreasonable at that time, acting crazy, grabbing, scratching, hitting me, even threatening to tell my wife about us, leaving me lonely and miserable!"
Gao Feng suddenly gritted his teeth in rage.
"By what right?"
"You tell me, by what right did she do this?"
Gao Feng’s expression turned ferocious, his eyes bloodshot, staring at Wang Zhaokai as if questioning, as if inquiring.
"She wasn’t a pure maiden when she was with me; she had been married. We were together for our mutual benefits. I even bought her a gold ring, costing over 2000 yuan."
"Why did Zhao Xiaowan want to ruin me?"
Wang Zhaokai sighed.
"So, you killed her? Crushed her to death with a stone?"
"Yes!"
Gao Feng suddenly calmed down.
"At that time, we were wrestling; she grabbed a nearby stone and smashed it on my face."
"In fact, I didn’t intend to kill him then, just wanted to snatch the stone from his hand. After getting it, I hit her a few times randomly, but then..."
Gao Feng continued: "I didn’t expect her to die; when I touched her nostrils later, there was no breath. I was terrified then, saw a water reservoir nearby, and threw her into it before running off."
This is Gao Feng’s whole account of the murder process.
However, Wang Zhaokai frowned as he looked at him.
He continued to ask: "You just said you took the stone from Zhao Xiaowan’s hand and then hit her."
"Tell me, specifically where did you hit, and how many times?"
Gao Feng shook his head: "It’s been too long, nine or ten years, I can’t remember the details clearly."
"It seemed like I hit her face, but exactly how many times I hit—three, four times—I really don’t know."
Humph!
Wang Zhaokai snorted coldly.
This Gao Feng is not being truthful.
If the whole murder process was really as Gao Feng said, the trial might result in Gao Feng not receiving a death sentence.
Because Gao Feng didn’t have the intent to kill Zhang Xiaowan and just wanted to send her back to Dongjiang Province, the conflict between them arose en route, with Zhao Xiaowan making the first move, and he accidentally killed her in the struggle.
This way, Gao Feng’s act would not be intentional murder; it might even be ruled as manslaughter.
Moreover, the most crucial part is that the weapon Gao Feng used to kill Zhao Xiaowan was the stone he snatched from her hand.
This further proves that Gao Feng did not intentionally kill Zhao Xiaowan but acted to prevent her from further harming him.
If Gao Feng could find a good lawyer for his future trial, he could even argue for excessive self-defense.
But is all this true?
Lu Chuan’s forensic analysis of the scar on the back of Zhao Xiaowan’s head somewhat reconstructed Gao Feng’s killing process, and it was not as he described.
