Deviant Kings: Claimed by The Four Lycan Kings
Chapter 153: A Real Smile
Adeline’s POV~
"I swear, as soon as we get back, I am going to tell everyone that you are not that quiet, mysterious girl anymore, you are downright violent," Adrian said, shaking his head with a dramatic, heavy sigh as he adjusted his jacket.
"And I will personally make sure to tell Kai that the grand royal courtier breaks down and cries in public places," I countered back instantly, crossing my arms and looking at him with a triumphant smirk.
"I do not cry in public places, Adeline!" he insisted sharply, throwing his hands up in pure frustration.
"Then explain to me why you were just sobbing right out here in this very public place?" I asked, tilting my head and raising my eyebrows as I waited for his excuse.
"Because it was..." Adrian stopped mid-sentence. He opened his mouth to defend himself, closed it tightly, and then slowly tilted his head back to stare up at the pale moon as if begging the night sky to grant him a way out of this conversation.
A quiet, helpless laugh escaped my lips at the sight of him looking so thoroughly defeated, and my face broke into a broad, genuine grin.
"Because it was a special case," he muttered under his breath, finally looking back down at me.
Then his eyes stopped on my face, and his whole body went still.
"Look at that," he whispered softly, his deep voice dropping into an intimate register that made my heart give a sudden, erratic flutter against my ribs. "A real smile."
My breath hitched sharply in my throat, catching in my chest. "What?"
"You’re actually smiling," he said, his tone softening until it was meant strictly for my ears alone. "A real, open smile. Not the polite, fake mask you put on for the royals."
Adrian stared down at me for a long, heavy second, his dark gaze scanning every line of my face. The playful smirk and sarcastic edge completely faded away, replaced by something warm, raw, and undeniable.
As I looked up into his eyes, the laughter in my chest slowly settled, and my smile softened into a quiet, gentle expression.
"Adrian," I said, my voice barely louder than a whisper in the cold night wind.
"Hm?" he hummed softly, taking a half-step closer.
"Thank you," I murmured, holding his gaze without pulling away.
He looked down at me, his eyebrows pulling together slightly as the joking atmosphere around us completely vanished into a rare moment of absolute sincerity.
"For what, Adeline?" he asked gently.
"For making me laugh," I whispered, feeling the tight, heavy knot of tension that had lived in my chest all day finally loosen its grip. "I didn’t think I had a real laugh left in me tonight."
"Well, that is exactly what I’m here for," he replied softly, a faint, tender warmth lingering in his dark eyes.
Then, just as quickly as the vulnerability had appeared, Adrian straightened his tall posture and rolled his shoulders back. In the blink of an eye, the intimate connection vanished, and his smooth, impeccably polished courtier mask snapped effortlessly back into place.
He turned his body toward the dark path leading back to the main road and offered his arm to me with a grand, dapper flourish.
"Well, my stubborn little princess," he said with a playful, dramatic bow of his head, his voice carrying clearly into the night air.
"As utterly thrilling as it has been to debate woodland insects and physical assault with you out here in the dark, we should probably head back to the car before your royal guardians decide I’ve kidnapped you."
I rolled my eyes, but a soft chuckle escaped me anyway. I reached out and rested my hand lightly on his arm.
"Fine," I whispered back, keeping my voice low as we turned and began walking side by side down the bridge. "But this conversation isn’t over, Adrian. As soon as we’re away from these guards..."
His fingers lightly tapped over mine resting on his forearm, a quick, firm press that sent a jolt of warmth.
"I know," he murmured, staring straight ahead into the night. "I’ll give you every single answer you’re searching for. I promise."
We walked side by side all the way to the end of the road, where the pavement met the shadowed edge of the street.
Parking under the dim glow of a single streetlamp was Kai’s sleek car, its headlights cutting two long, golden beams into the darkness.
Sierra and Kai were leaning against the passenger side, waiting for us.
Kai was the first to spot us stepping out of the gloom. A knowing, playful smirk spread across his face as he pushed himself off the hood.
"Oh, you’re finally here," Kai spoke, his voice laced with lighthearted teasing. "Took you so long! But hey, I’m not complaining... considering it’s your first date, Adrian."
"Your first date??" I repeated, looking up at him.
A small, genuine laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it, remembering how the date, oh I mean the babysitting session went, a light, real sound that echoed softly in the quiet night air.
At the sound of my laughter, Adrian turned his head. His dark eyes softened completely, and his lips curved into a warm, gentle smile as he took in the sight of my true, unhidden laugh.
I turned my head toward Sierra, her jaw was slightly slack, her eyes wide with total surprise as she stared straight at me.
She stood there paralysed, watching the way how my smile reached my whole face.
In all the time she had known me, through all the walls I built, the fake polite smiles, and the heavy hoodie I hid inside, this was her very first time ever seeing me laugh like this. Truly, openly laugh.
"Adeline..." Sierra breathed, her voice barely a whisper, completely thrown off by the sight.
Before I could even process the look of pure shock on her face, Sierra took two fast steps forward and wrapped her arms tightly around my shoulders, pulling me into a warm, sudden hug.
