Chapter 940: Chapter 457: The Alternation of Day and Night (Second Update)

"You mean there wasn’t a red brick road here before?" Lawrence Winters glanced down at the road beneath her feet.

The guide nodded, "No. I know about this. When they were building the road, I rode my bike here with my friends to check it out. At that time, it was said the bricks weren’t new ones bought from the store but rather second-hand ones salvaged from somewhere."

This was about what Lawrence Winters had guessed.

As she walked up the steps, she curiously asked, "And what about the previous white family? How did they live here?"

"Not very well." The guide waved his hand regretfully, "But the family was quite friendly, often baking cakes and sharing them with us kids."

"Oh, then they sold the house and moved away?"

"Yes, apparently they ran into some business problems and needed funds to turn things around, so they sold the house. I heard it was on the market for a long time with no buyers, and it was only after several price cuts that the current family bought it."

As the three of them chatted, they had already climbed the stairs and stood in front of the main door.

The welcome mat was somewhat dirty, with specks of dust that glinted brightly in the sunset, resembling molten gold.

Lawrence Winters and the guide rubbed the soles of their shoes on the doormat, then pressed the doorbell.

Behind them, Wang the Daoist followed up the steps, muttering, "...Unless I’ve been wrong for decades, there’s not a hint of evil here. Not only that, it’s extraordinarily clean, unusually so."

Although Lawrence Winters didn’t understand the "Thirteen Techniques of Zhu You," her intuition was sharp, and she felt the same way.

She nodded, "It’s definitely very clean, the air is fresh, living here should be quite pleasing."

The house was pinned under the red brick road outside, and considering their mutual interplay, she didn’t think there was any problem here.

Footsteps could be heard from inside, and soon the door was opened by the host.

He said joyfully, "You’ve finally arrived, how was it? Two hours of walking, enough to lose some weight, right?"

He even winked at Lawrence Winters.

Lawrence Winters covered her mouth and laughed, "You’re really humorous. But indeed, we’ve had quite the workout, or else all those pork-stuffed dumplings and braised pork with beans from earlier would turn into fat..."

"Hahaha! That’s great! That’s great!" The host said as he pulled the door aside and stepped away to let the three of them inside.

The interior decor looked aged, with shining teak floors, mottled brown-red marble countertops, Tiffany chandeliers, and half-panelled entryway walls in brown-tan wood.

It was the Italian rustic villa style that was all the rage over twenty years ago, richly colored and deep, as if Little Red Riding Hood were being chased by the Big Bad Wolf, just about to run in from the forest outside.

There’s a long, narrow rug in the entryway stretching all the way to the living room.

Closed shoe cabinets flanked either side, although some cabinet doors were half-open, revealing the shoes inside.

But the host didn’t ask them to change shoes, just said, "Come in, everybody’s here."

Lawrence Winters didn’t want to enter with just socks on either; it would be too impolite, plus the rug had noticeable specks of dust, likely tracked in from outside, that caught the light from the wall sconces, occasionally casting golden glimmers on the rug.

There was a sense of paper-moon decadence.

Each era spans about twenty years, with its own memories and highlights.

Lawrence Winters followed the host inside.

The guide and Wang the Daoist walked shoulder to shoulder.

Once inside, they saw six other Daoists sitting on the couch.

The driver was sitting alone in the corner, focused on his phone.

As she quickly scanned the room, she noticed everyone was part of the competition, with no sign of the homeowners.

The host saw everyone was there and contentedly waved his hand, "Everyone’s here, have a seat!"

Lawrence Winters and Wang the Daoist sat together, curious, "...Where are the homeowners? Aren’t they home?"

"The two clients are at work, they should be back soon." The host glanced at his watch, "It’s getting late, we can start drawing lots."

Lawrence Winters: "...Drawing lots again?"

The last time she drew lots, she ended up teamed with Mr. Zhuge, already feeling somewhat speechless.

"Yes, two commissions, one requires feng shui adjustments, the other needs evil spirits dispelling. You draw lots to decide who does which commission, guaranteeing fairness and reason."

Lawrence Winters chuckled, "Of course, nothing like the fairness of drawing lots... disregarding your years of expertise and effort, not considering whether you’re suited, just decide by drawing lots and call it fair and reasonable... this is pure laziness, isn’t it?"
