Chapter 1053: Chapter 494: A Master Leads You to the Door, Cultivation Is Up to the Individual (Second Update, Requesting Recommendation Ticket)

Abigail Henderson spoke as she quickly pulled up the abbreviated version of the court case for Kenneth Osborne to see while she explained.

"This case started off the same way as yours, where one company accused another of infringing on their copyrighted code and demanded a substantial compensation."

"However, the accused company, like yours, claimed to never have known about the existence of the other’s code and insisted that their software code was independently developed."

"And, just like me, the defendant’s lawyer compared the documentation of both codes and discovered these slight differences."

"But most people didn’t understand what the one percent difference meant, and simply ignored it as being within an allowable margin of error." ℯℯ𝘭.

"This lawyer, however, had a unique qualification; before taking the bar and becoming a lawyer, he held a PhD in computer science and his hobby was coding."

"He discovered that the two segments of code with ninety-nine percent similarity were likely compiled using the same code editor named ’Amort.’"

"The ’Amort’ code editor was in a relatively primitive stage, with only a few fixed templates unlike the more advanced and personalized editors available today."

"When programming with the basic ’Amort’ code editor, you provide it with some logical requirements, and it generates fixed code to complete the tasks."

"This is akin to walking through a maze in a house, where you designate three coordinates ABC, and everyone wanting to go from A to C must pass through point B."

"Coding with this basic ’Amort’ editor results in the same issue. Simply put, the two companies happened to want to achieve the same goal, hence the ’Amort’ editor would produce nearly identical code, with those subtle one-percent differences being the distinguishing factors between the two software."

"The issue, however, is that a basic editor like ’Amort’ with fixed templates has long been phased out by the market."

"Government departments don’t even consider the code written by it to have copyright characteristics, nor intellectual property rights, and certainly wouldn’t grant a copyright license, so most companies ceased using it, and hardly anyone knows about it now."

"After the lawyer realized this, he coordinated with his client to conduct an exhaustive investigation of their company, and his hypothesis was proven correct."

The investigation revealed that a software engineer from a major South Asian country within the defendant’s company had secretly used the basic ’Amort’ editor for convenience in writing the program.

"And the plaintiff’s company, after court interrogation by this lawyer, was forced to investigate themselves. They found that their software engineer, also from the same South Asian country, had lazily used the same basic editor, ’Amort,’ to generate part of their code."

"Once the lawyer exposed this, the plaintiff company’s copyright license became invalid, and they faced inquiries and penalties from government departments for possible fraud in applying for the copyright license."

"Thus, the defendant won the lawsuit."

"I have a feeling that your case might have some similarities to that case from over a decade ago."

Kenneth Osborne was engrossed in the reading and after a while, frowned and said, "But I didn’t use a code editor to write the core code. Because core software with AI capabilities for deep human-machine dialogue can’t be accomplished by any code editor."

"However, for non-core parts, I did use the ’Icaris’ code editor. But the issue is, the non-core part doesn’t match the plaintiff’s program. The plaintiff hasn’t sued the non-core parts of my software code."

Abigail nodded, "So what they’re accusing you of infringing is the core part of the content, but you didn’t use a code editor for that."

She opened the voice recorder, began recording Kenneth’s explanation, and confirmed by saying, "So you did use the ’Icaris’ code editor, but the code program in question wasn’t written with the Icaris editor, right? It was entirely hand-written by you?"

"Yes." Kenneth nodded, "The instant effects production software has many functions, and human-machine dialogue controlled by AI is just one feature, which is the core part. This section is my own hand-coded. As for other functions, I employed the modern, more advanced Icaris editor, and there’s no possibility of duplicated code for identical functionality."
